A mechanistic semi-empirical model developed from fundamental physical principles of a falling particle in a viscous fluid was tested against actual flocculation column data. The accuracy of the mechanistic model was evaluated using the sum of the squared errors between the interpolated values (real values) and the model predictions. Its fitting capabilities were compared with Özer's model using nine flocculent data sets of which four were obtained from literature and the rest were actual data from the performed experiments. The developed model consistently simulated the flocculation behaviour of particles in settling columns better than Özer's model in eight of the nine data sets considered. It is recommended that the model's performance be further compared with other models like the Rule based and San's model. The errors due to the use of ...

FloatStar Level Stabiliser (FSLS) is an advanced level control module designed specifically for flotation cells. Unlike conventional PID controllers, it accounts for interactions between the cells in a bank and moves all the associated valves simultaneously. This enables it to reject disturbances quickly whilst ensuring fast setpoint tracking. For the Lead (Pb) flotation circuit, the FloatStar control system increased the mineral recovery by 0.51% while the concentrate grade was within its desired economical level. Similarly, when the FloatStar control system was activated on the Zinc (Zn) flotation circuit, a recovery improvement of 0.12% was observed with the mineral grade within acceptable economical levels. PERFORMANCE DATA AND DISCUSSION Performance tests The FloatStar ON/OFF test campaign was conducted for a period of 2 weeks to determine the plant metal...
