However, the pulmonary consequences of neutrophil accumulation have not been fully elucidated. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) had been postulated to participate in neutrophil transmigration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of MMP-9 in the neutrophilic inflammation of VILI.

A total of 160 female patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I or II; age 18-80 yrs) undergoing gynecologic surgery were randomly allocated to the standard or rotational technique groups. In the standard technique group (n = 80), ProSeal laryngeal mask airway insertion was performed by a single experienced user using digital manipulation. In the rotational technique group (n = 80), the ProSeal laryngeal mask airway was rotated counter clockwise through 90 degrees in the mouth and advanced until the resistance of the hypopharynx was felt, and then straightened out in the hypopharynx (n = 80). The ease of insertion was assessed by the success rate at the first attempt. Heart rate and mean blood pressure were recorded 1 min before and 1 min after insertion. Postoperative complications were noted. The success rate of insertion at the first attempt was higher for the rotational technique (100% vs. 85%, P < 0.001). The overall success rate, i.e., successful insertion within three attempts, was 94% for the standard technique versus 100% for the rotational technique. There was no significant change in heart rate, but mean blood pressure increased significantly with the standard technique (P = 0.001). The incidence of blood staining (9% vs. 36%, P < 0.001) and sore throat (8% vs. 25%, P = 0.005) was lower with the rotational technique. The rotational technique is more successful than the standard technique and is associated with less pharyngeal mucosal trauma, as evidenced by a lower incidence of sore throat and mucosal bleeding.

The ZnO micro rod layer, which was grown vertically by using the chemical bath deposition, was successfully fabricated as a hexagonal shape along the c-axis which is the preferred growth orientation. The growth of ZnO rod being adequate for device applications was examined through investigating growth mechanism of ZnO rod and optimizing the photo resist profile so as to remove the undercut which was found in the grown ZnO rod. The growth model and material properties of the 3-dimensional ZnO rod were analyzed through the scanning electron microscope.

The strain produced the highest endoglucanase (EG), cellobiohydrolase (CBH) and beta-glucosidase (BGL) activities of 0.3, 3.2 and 8U/mg-protein, respectively, with rice straw as the carbon source. Saccharification of the woody biomass with A. arvensis cellulase as the enzyme source released a high level of fermentable sugars. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the poplar biomass was optimized using the response surface methodology in order to study the influence of the variables (pH, temperature, cellulases concentration and substrate concentration). The enzyme and substrate concentrations were identified as the limiting factors for the saccharification of poplar wood biomass. A total reducing sugar level of 29g/L (293mg/g-substrate) was obtained at an enzyme concentration of 65FPU/g-substrate after optimization of the hydrolysis parameters. The model validation showed a good agreement between the experimental results and the predicted responses. A. arvensis could be a good candidate for the production of reducing sugars from a cellulosic biomass.

Research paper thumbnail of Covalent Attachment and Hybridization of DNA Oligonucleotides on Patterned Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Films

SWNT multilayer films were constructed via consecutive condensation reactions creating stacks of functionalized SWNT layers linked together by 4,4'-oxydianiline. Aminated- or carboxylated-DNA oligonucleotides were covalently immobilized to the respective carboxylated or aminated SWNT multilayer films through amide bond formation using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic analysis indicated that the SWNT film surface density increased uniformly according to the number of reaction cycles. Scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements of the SWNT multilayer film revealed a uniform coverage over the substrate surface. The covalent attachment of DNA oligonucleotides to the SWNT multilayer films and their subsequent hybridization with complementary oligonucleotides were verified using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and fluorescence-based measurements. This is the first report demonstrating that DNA oligonucleotides can be covalently attached to immobilized SWNT multilayer films. The anchored DNA oligonucleotides were shown to exhibit excellent specificity, realizing their potential in future biosensor applications.

The mean follow-up period was 22 months (range, 12 months–48 months).Patency of the lacrimal passage to irrigation and the duration of this procedure.Complete resolution of epiphora was accomplished in 55 (93.2%) of the 59 eyes. There was recurrence of epiphora in four cases because of obstruction of the stent in three cases and obstruction of the common canaliculus by recurrent dacryocystitis in one case.Polyurethane stenting without fluoroscopic guidance seems to be a valuable technique for primary management of nasolacrimal duct obstruction before dacryocystorhinostomy.
