Instrumented dogs were trained on cardiovascular conditioning tasks which resulted in progressive... more Instrumented dogs were trained on cardiovascular conditioning tasks which resulted in progressive elevations in arterial pressure and total peripheral resistance together with decreases in heart rate and cardiac output over periods of five to 16 hours. In a first series of experiments, these effects were generated by aversive stimulation of occasions of acute heart rate increases (i.e., punishment of cardiovascular defense reflexes). In a second series of experiments, this pattern emerged during preavoidance periods immediately preceding required performances on freeoperant shock-avoidance tasks.
