Socially engineered and constructed meanings, concepts, ideas, and values related to Syrian refug... more Socially engineered and constructed meanings, concepts, ideas, and values related to Syrian refugeedom are nowadays produced and re-appropriated by numerous experts and scholars almost without regard to the detrimental effects on the lives of refugees and host societies. Their efforts to treat refugees as global citizens with human rights, while well-intentioned, do not provide workable solutions to the protracted lives of Syrians worldwide. To date, knowledge about the current situation of refugees has been informed by epistemological and policy frameworks developed to better understand and care for refugees. However, this knowledge of the conceptual and empirical space of refugeedom as a new mode of being today largely fulfills the bureaucratic and technocratic needs of Western liberal democracies that seek to control and discipline people on the move within their normative taxonomies of legal categorizations. Based on a critical qualitative sociological study of Turkish scholars/experts' knowledge production about Syrian refugees on the Balkan route since the 2015/2016 European migration/refugee crisis, the aim of this chapter is to present a methodological innovation in research design and the study of contemporary migration issues within the sociology of migration. A balanced study of knowledge production and global refugeedom was conducted to bridge the epistemological, methodological, and empirical divergences between critical sociology/sociology of knowledge and migration studies. By applying an interdisciplinary qualitative analysis (constructivist grounded theory methodology combined with a Foucauldian discourse analysis), it was possible to determine how and what kind of scientific/expert knowledge was produced by Turkish scientists/experts and to what extent their research findings were in line with those of their international colleagues. This chapter will therefore conclude by revealing the unknown and unexpected findings about the discursive power of knowledge produced by scientists on the Syrian refugee issue and the subaltern potential of Turkish academia in order to produce new methodological results (sociology of knowledge discourse approach) that are open-ended and deal intensively with morality.

economic system» were soon followed by the quest for improvement of living standard and then finally, by
the rise of a consumer society. Namely, since mid-1950s two general directives became increasingly evident
in federal year plans, especially in the five-year social development plan (1957–1961) – the living standard
improvement and the increase in spending power of working population. At the same time development
of heavy, basic industry was not more in the focus of economic policy and the economic planning, but a
development of light industry and consequently an increase of production of consumer goods. The paper
focuses on the consumer goods (and their afterlife) produced in kombinat Borovo and kombinat Jugoplastika,
the Yugoslav largest producers of rubber (Borovo) and polymere (Jugoplastika) consumer goods. Borovo
(previously Bata) situated in Vukovar, Croatia, was founded in 1931 and is still operating in smaller scale.
In the interwar as well in the socialist era it was a synonym for footwear, especially work, leisure and free
time footwear. Today, Borovo’s brand Startas is one of the favorites particularly among young people.
Jugoplastika, on the other hand was one of the crests of Yugoslav postwar industrialization. It was founded
in 1952 in Split, Croatia, at a time when industrial production in Yugoslavia was starting to conform to a
sort of hybrid consumerism. The Jugoplastika’s products were the indispensable part of happy childhood,
summer vacations, wardrobe and even the famous Yugo automobile. In the process of transition and reform
in 1990s kombinat Jugoplastika was first fragmented, filed for bankruptcy and finally removed from Registry.
The products became dispensable and almost forgotten if they have not, just for a few days, resurfaced at the
exhibition «Groundwork Jugoplastika» in 2011 in Split and during the action «Jugoplastika + supporting the
memory» held in the eve of Jugoplastika’s would be 60th anniversary in 2012 in Split.

Franjo Tuđman was internationally created, namely the international context in which scientists and experts have produced factual truths about Croatia's First President's leadership, his role and accountability in the events that have marked the violent disintegration of former Yugoslavia, Croatia's war of defense, and democratic transition. Developed discourse of the international scholarship about Yugoslav wars of disintegration and Croatia's painful democratic transition is analyzed to determine how and in what way Dr. Franjo Tuđman is represented in selected publications available to the author of this paper. International scholarly production under the review is rather multidisciplinary with a variety of approaches, methodologies and theories providing rich data which in this case is studied juxtaposed to dominant transitional justice discourse framework. Such qualitative sociological research tries to deconstruct international scholarly context in which factual truths about dr. Franjo Tuđman were socially constructed by scholars and experts. Even though not always framed under the umbrella of transitional justice scholarship, developed discourse is nonetheless analyzed through critical lenses of social constructivism 1 and approached in post-modernist sociological manner.

Namely, in order to advance contemporary understanding of modern barbarism, the author calls for a social inquiry into publications about the wars in the former Yugoslavia based on how and to what extent the Vukovar Battle of 1991 is studied and perceived in international and domestic literature. This frame of reference is applied here under the scrutiny of critical theory in order to enable critical assessment of the international and domestic social inquiry into modern barbarism and to introduce less restrictive and vitally more alternative approach to its understanding. It is argued that an alternative approach should be based on the qualitative research into the personal narratives as an integral part of the comprehensive understanding of modern barbarism. Based on the surveyed literature, a debate which interprets contemporary violence and wars in the former Yugoslavia is analyzed only to conclude that it neglects to understand modern barbarism.
