The wool characteristics measured included fibre diameter (FD) and staple length (SL) at the age of 8 months and yearling fibre diameter (YFD), yearling staple length (YSL) and yearling greasy fleece weight (YGFW) at 18 months of age. Animals were genotyped using the Axiom 50 K Ovine Genotyping Array. Maximum likelihood estimations of a linear mixed model (LMM) were used to estimate genomic heritability, where GWAS was conducted following a score test of each trait. Genomic heritability estimates for the traits ranged between 0.22 and 0.63, indicating that phenotypes have a moderate range of heritability. One genome- and six chromosome-wide significant SNPs were associated with the wool traits in Akkaraman lambs. Accordingly, TRIM2, MND1, TLR2, RNF175, CEP290, TMTC3, RERE, SLC45A1, SOX2, MORN1, SKI, FAAP20...

Moreover, sheep preweaning growth traits as well as in vivo carcass composition traits such as ultrasonic measurements of Longissimus dorsi muscle depth (UMD) and back-fat thickness (UFD) are crucially important indicators of meat yield and hot carcass composition. Despite their relative importance for productivity and profitability of a sheep production system, detected QTL for these traits are quite scarce. Therefore, we implemented GWAS for these traits using animal mixed model-based association approach provided by GenABEL in Esme sheep. Three genome-wide and 14 individual chromosome-wide associated SNPs were discovered. As a result, ESRP1, LOC105613082, ZNF641, DUSP5, TEAD1, SMOX, PTPRT, RALYL, POM121C, PHIP, LOC101106051, ZIM3, PEG3, TRPC7, FBXL4, LOC105610397, LOC105616489 and DNAAF2 were suggested as candidates. Some of the discovered genes and involved pathways were already annotated to contribute growth and development in various species including human, mice and cattle. All in all, the results of this study are expected to strongly contribute to shed a light on the underlying molecular mechanisms behind growth and carcass composition traits, with potential implications on studies aiming faster genetic improvement, targeted low-resolution SNP panel designs and genome-editing studies.

Abstract Quantitative traits such as pre-weaning growth is expressed as a result of combined gene... more Abstract Quantitative traits such as pre-weaning growth is expressed as a result of combined genetic and environmental effects. The phenotypic expression of those traits in offspring is affected by direct genetic effect and sometimes also maternal genetic effect which is the ability of the dam to provide optimum nurturing conditions. The objective of the current study was to estimate genetic parameters for birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW) and average pre-weaning daily weight gain (ADWG) in Central Anatolian Merino sheep. Observations of 9746 lambs descending from 171 rams and 2045 dams between 2014 and 2020 were included in the study. Generalized linear models were applied to determine the best fitting fixed effects model. Subsequently, the estimations of variance and covariance components were carried out by using the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedure applied on an animal linear mixed model including those significant effects on preceding analyses. In general, the direct heritability estimates of the traits were moderate for BW, WW and ADWG as found to be 0.22 ± 0.02, 0.32 ± 0.02 and 0.33 ± 0.02 respectively. On the other hand, maternal heritability estimates were considerably low for all traits with 0.04 ± 0.01 (BW), 0.03 ± 0.01 (WW) and 0.03 ± 0.01 (ADWG). The genetic correlations between BW and WW was moderate and negative as -0.30 ± 0.05 whereas, the phenotypic and residual correlations were close to zero. Similarly, the correlations between BW and ADWG were negative for all type of correlations. Especially, a moderate genetic correlation was found between the two traits as -0.37 ± 0.05. As expected, the correlations between WW and ADWG were quite high and positive for all type of correlations. The outcomes of the study will contribute to the world-wide sheep breeding literature with the crossbred performance of Merino and an indigenous sheep breed, as well as its parameters of interest in terms of designing breeding programmes with multi-trait selection indices.

For this purpose, a total of 23490 heads of ewes and its lambs reared in different herds and under natural conditions were used in Gaziantep. The study covers the period between 2014 and 2017. The preliminary descriptive statistics showed that 35.24% and 25.47% of the ewes gave birth in January and December, respectively. Furthermore, the lamb survival rate at the weaning age was calculated to be 97.54% in February and 97.52% in December. The highest and the lowest birth weights were detected as 4.2 ± 0.01 kg and 2.7 ± 0.09 kg in January and May, respectively (P<0.01). On the other hand, the highest and lowest mean values for weaning weight (60 th day live weight) were determined as 21.1 ± 0.11 kg and 15.4 ± 0.45 kg in lambs respectively born in October and May (P<0.01). As a result, it can be stated that the most appropriate mating period for Awassi sheep reared in Gaziantep province is between August and September considering the reproductive characteristics and lamb growing. The data was obtained from 200 heads of Awassi lambs raised in Gaziantep province. The results of the path analysis indicated that the variants of sacrum height and body length sustained the most significant effect on the weaning weight. Consequentely, chest girth and body length were the most favorable measurements to estimate weaning weight in Awassi and could be used as a reliable criteria for practical selection in Awassi lambs.
