The concept of identity could be understood and interpreted as a paradoxical term within the cont... more The concept of identity could be understood and interpreted as a paradoxical term within the context of globalization. A phenomenological enquiry within the transmodern paradigm is carried out according to the theoretical background in this research. As far as Deleuze is concerned, there can only be an “identity of difference”, thus the urban identity should be reinterpreted as a paradoxical term. The paradoxes of urban identity are discovered through the concepts of becoming, palimpsest and place-memory in Istanbul, here inquired as an exemplar. In three fragments of Istanbul, namely, Beyoglu, Levent-Gultepe and Kuzguncuk the actants (both human and nonhuman), in Bruno Latour’s words, produce unique relations giving rise to a constant transformation. The relations emphasized within the transmodern paradigm are discovered through transdiscursive readings in the chosen fragments. Transdiscursive readings are carried out with a holistic approach and through the relational theory. As a result understanding the urban identity as a paradoxical term could open up new ways of thinking –and acting– in architectural and urban design based on constant transformation.

Mimarlık eğitiminin sorgulanmasında bu kurgusal terimin çağrışımları farklı açılımlara neden olduğundan son yıllarda çok sık kullanılıyor. Bu makalede söz konusu terim, öğrenme odaklı eğitim stratejisi bağlamında mimar adayının eğitime başladığı ilk andan itibaren hayat boyu öğrenme sürecine uzanan bir zaman aralığını kapsıyor; ve eğitimde sürdürülebilirlik ve esneklik ilkesine gönderme yapıyor. 'Mimarın eğitimi' üzerine tartışmalar mimarlık toplum ilişkisini de farklı açılardan sorgulamamıza yardımcı olmakta. Türkiye' de toplum ve mimarlık ilişkisi, mimarlık politikaları geliştirme çabaları, eğitim sırasında kazanılmayan çevresel duyarlılık ve toplumsal sorumluluk nedeniyle son derece yetersiz. Mimarlık bilgisinin değişen, değişime direnç gösteren paradoksal konularının bir arada ele alınmasına kapı açan "mimarın eğitimi" terimi öğrenme odaklı bir eğitim stratejisinin ve taktiklerin gelişmesine katkı sağlayabilir. Bu makale, günümüzde tartışmaların ekseninde yer alan eğitimin paradokslarını ve derin ilişkilerini, arada olma haline gönderme yapan araform / ara uzam kavramı üzerinden anlama ve açıklama odaklı bir yaklaşım olarak düşünülebilir. "Mimarın eğitimi üzerine spekülatif bir deneme" adlı bu araştırma yazısı özgün bir eğitim stratejisi arayışı bağlamında ara uzam gerçekliğin olası durumlarına ilişkin taktik üretme denemesi olarak düşünülebilir.

Today phenomenology points out the ways for a ‘return to experience’ in architecture emphasizing ... more Today phenomenology points out the ways for a ‘return to experience’ in architecture emphasizing spatiality which is the primary condition of all lived-world. Understanding the spatiality as a complex interlocking of time, space, culture, material, detail and way of life gives rise to the “whole” pattern involving interwoven network relations. This whole pattern can be grasped throughout the enmeshed experience which makes it possible to be in constant dialogue and interaction with the narrative space. Considering architecture as a narrative space also engender the different ways of seeing, of reading from an interpretive frame with our entire bodily experience. In doing so, it is possible to touch, behold its spatiality in which cultural, political, economic, psychological and social dynamics are meshed as a whole. In this paper, the term of enmeshed experience will be introduced considering the intervention of the Old Galata Bridge at length, some notions such as multiplicity, becoming, production of sensation, duration, spatio-temporal experience, complexity and legibility. As a result, enmeshed experience points out the ways to grasp the remarkable, inexhaustible range of possibilities for future regeneration projects.

The article opens a discussion on the role and impact of architecture and architectural design in... more The article opens a discussion on the role and impact of architecture and architectural design in the processes of production of space driven by the dynamics of consumerism. Such a discussion can also be regarded as a self-recrimination of architecture questioning if a critical architectural stance could be achieved towards consumerism. Scrutinizing a finalized space production process, dissecting it in sections and layers with critical theory's approach, proposes a way of reading (an interpretation) the process itself and the role of architecture within, thus providing an exemplar. In a context where the dynamics of consumerism can be regarded as the leading power of space production, architecture by its own means of production is expected to be in the service of power and at the same time displaying a counter stance aganist power. Yet the possibility of a critical stance (in other words a position-taking) must be taken into consideration. The article points out to the dialectic nature of architecture and implies that a critical stance is possible if ever changing, shifting tactics are adopted towards the strategies of power.

In this studio, students have designed an object as an extension of the body which co-exists with its visual and functional integrity by applying the different ways of seeing and thinking, discovering patterns and relationships, not only stimulating intellectually but also satisfying emotionally and spiritually. Students were asked to design an object as the extension of body, contributing its functional entity with its portable and transformable character and to give a reasonable "name" in accordance with the theme. Today a remarkable paradigm shift in design issues necessitates rethinking the architectural educ... more Today a remarkable paradigm shift in design issues necessitates rethinking the architectural education. All the concepts, values, techniques concerning the disciplines which supply the body of knowledge necessary for architectural education are used to define the problems of architectural design paradoxes and their solutions. In order to develop creative thinking for modifying this body of knowledge, students should be aware of the shifting balances of architectural paradoxes which require a more unified mind. This new teaching and learning strategy proposed for first year design education is considered as a paradigm shift because of the basic pedagogical change in design education in which architectural design, basic design and technical drawing and perspective courses are integrated within an intellectual studio atmosphere. The intellectual studio atmosphere created during the 2003-2004 academic year at ITU Faculty of Architecture provided both the instructors and the group of 50 students to act as energy receivers to capture the reciprocal relationship between the whole and the parts, in both general and particular issues. Fundamentally this strategy makes these 50 students be able to transform all the abilities and knowledge that they have learned throughout their lifelong education.

Çalışma, genel olarak, kitsch olgusunu tanımlama ve kavramayı amaçlayan akademik bir tartışma zemini oluşturmayı amaçlar. Kitschin kesin modernliğini ortaya koyduktan sonra, olgu iki kategoriye ayrılır ve birbirlerinden farklı özelliklerine göre değerlendirilir. Özelde, çalışmanın nesnesine dair alternatif bir okuma önerir. Kitsch nesne, diğer bir deyişle sözde nesne, ona ihtiyacı olan bir kişi olmadan düşünülemeyeceği için, nesnenin yanı sıra özne de araştırmaya dahil olur. Demokrasiyi, ve dolayısıyla eşit oluşu bir raison d'être olarak kabul edip, öznenin muhakemesini felce uğratarak, gerçeklik anlayışını yitirmesine sebep olan modelin, ya da dolayımlayıcının, varlığı açıklanacaktır. There is a growing dissatisfaction with the housing environment concerning its quality in contemp... more There is a growing dissatisfaction with the housing environment concerning its quality in contemporary world. As a solution to this problem, a holistic research strategy based on understanding the reciprocal relations between objective attributes and subjective evaluations of housing quality is proposed. A new way of seeing and thinking is required in order to understand the reciprocal relations which are grounded on a holistic approach to housing quality having the superimposed layers of social, technological, cultural, perceptual and spatial dimensions. The evaluation criteria of quality thus takes its roots from the interwoven results of both actual, physical properties of setting and perceived, experienced phenomena. In other words, the deep meaning of quality can be understood by interlocking relations of subjectivity and objectivity. Accordingly puzzle solving activity can be considered as choreography emerged in dialectics of multiplicity which leads us mythical stage between the real and virtual, between the possibilities and limitations creating shifting balances. This study originates from a second year architectural design studio experience which was conduct... more This study originates from a second year architectural design studio experience which was conducted at İstanbul Technical University, Faculty of Architecture in 2012 and it discusses a paradigm shift in architectural design education in the context of studio culture. The main motivation distinguishing the studio was to start an open studio culture in a cultivation atmosphere, and elaborate architectural design education in a multifaceted manner while questioning the teaching-learning duality. 'Parallax-Room 3407' inherited its name from the book 'Parallax' by Holl, which triggered the conceptual discussions it is founded on, and the studio 3407 of Taşkışla. The studio during the period of fall semester, followed different synchronous trajectories which are covered in the following subtopics in this paper: Bodily Experience, Critical Thinking, Learning By Doing, Narratives On Urban Context, Parallax: Thinking With Concepts, and Thinking By Representing. This learning environment referred to a constructivist educational approach, and was founded on the acknowledgement that design knowledge can only be achieved through discovery, not by a passive transmission from the teacher to the student. The contextual character of architectural design knowledge necessitates a paradigm shift; the activation of an open studio culture and burgeoning approaches of learning to learn, learning by discovering/ experiencing/ doing instead of pursuing conventional practices.
