Blended learning has been extensively used thanks to the development of communication technologies and the availability of Internet services. Meanwhile, experiences-based research, by all accounts, can help the expansion of such a learning modality. Therefore, this study was designed to explain nursing doctoral students' experiences of blended learning. To attain this goal, a descriptive phenomenology method was used to illustrate experiences as they are experienced by the participants in the study. With regard to the nature of the investigated phenomena and the existing methods for the inductive analysis, Colaizzi's method of data analysis was used. The findings of the study led to the discovery of three main themes: "failure", "synergy" and "specific interaction". Each of the themes has been further divided into some sub-themes.

Considering such effects, especially in nursing, we aimed to compare the 360-degree feedback in assessing the clinical skills of nursing students in Ardabil University of Medical Sciences. Methods The present interventional study was conducted on the undergraduate Freshman nursing students of the 2014-2015 academic year (48 students) in Ardabil University of Medical Sciences in the burn ward of Fatemi Hospital in Ardabil City, Iran. The data gathering tool was a three-part researcher-made questionnaire for assessing clinical skills. Data analysis was performed in SPSS, using descriptive and inferential statistics, including Independent Samples t-test and Paired Samples t-test. Results In the present study, the total mean±SD scores of the traditional and 360-degree grading based on the score of 20 were 15.8±0.88 and 17.66±0.61, respectively. Moreover, the results of Independent Samples t-test indicated a significant difference between the two methods (P<0.031). Conclusion According to the obtained results, the use of 360-degree feedback, considering its potential characteristics, can reduce the gap between theory and practice by involving coaches and nurses. Furthermore, this method can effectively reduce the aura errors and evaluation of students' taste by masters and trainers. In addition, it can provide students with more realistic scores in clinical settings and reflect their strengths and weaknesses.

The aim of this study was to determine facilitators and barriers of communication between the nursing student and patient during 2000-2015. Methods: In this systematic review, full text of articles related to nurse-patient communication were retrieved from English and Persian databases (PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, Magiran, SID and Medlib). Using the "Nursing Students", "Patients" and "Communication" search strings and their equivalent in Persian language, the titles of articles were searched. In addition, the data extraction form which was developed according to the study's objectives was used to collect data. From the 38 related papers that were identified, 26 articles were excluded because they were not in line with the inclusion criteria. Nine additional studies relevant to the research were directly added through manual search. In total, 21 English and Persian papers were identified and considered in this review. Results: Seventeen of 21 articles (80.96%) were descriptive studies, of which four (19.04%) were qualitative studies. Six of 17 descriptive articles (35.29%) were from intervention studies. Twelve of the papers (57.14%) were conducted in Iran and nine (42.86%) were investigated in other countries. The results showed that improving the nursing students' theoretical knowledge and clinical experience of communication, giving feedback, listening, empathy and assertiveness skills, and cultural and social characteristics of the wards were facilitators or inhibitors of the communication between the nursing students and patients. Conclusions: Based on the findings, individual, educational and environmental factors may act as facilitators or inhibitors of the communication between nursing student and patient. As such, it is suggested that nursing educators teach students about these factors and consider them in practice.

Research paper thumbnail of Medical Research Council framework for development and evaluation of complex interventions: A comprehensive guidance

Journal of Education and Health Promotion, 2020

Complex intervention framework is extensively used in health service delivery, community, health ... more Complex intervention framework is extensively used in health service delivery, community, health and social policy, such as education, with important health outcomes. Such interventions are sensitive and flexible to the regional context and culture. Complex interventions introduce the use of two or more information sources or two or more research methods to answer a research question.[1,2] Using more than two research methods with triangulation techniques increases the validity of the research findings. Such studies are considered as mixed methods.[2] Complex intervention framework includes the steps which are not necessarily linear and there is also no clear boundary between simple and complex interventions. Such steps include plan development, feasibility and pilot, evaluation, and implementation. These steps have no linear or cyclic order.[3] This framework emphasizes that any intervention should be presented to the patients tailored to the context and culture of that society (political, social, and geographical). Even if the intervention can be presented equally in different societies, the context of that society cannot be ignored in the face of the intervention because one intervention may have different effects on two different societies. In fact, this framework introduces the mechanisms which are sufficiently relevant to that society in order to achieve some changes. In addition, the context of the society after the intervention should be considered in interpreting the findings.[4] Meanwhile, Lakshman et al. considered the use of this framework to infants' nutritional behaviors in lactation with the analysis of cost-effectiveness of a complex intervention in his study as a challenging, long and costly intervention. He even suggested conducting interventional research with or without a framework to evaluate their effectiveness alongside costs.[5]

Furthermore, the poor encounters between nursing student and patient demonstrate the necessity of instruction regarding therapeutic communication. The aim of this study was to define and clarify this important concept for including this subject in the nursing curriculum with more emphasis. Methods: A literature search was conducted using keywords such as "nursing student", "patient" and "therapeutic communication" and Persian-equivalent words in Persian databases (including Magiran and Medlib) and English databases (including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus and ProQuest) without time limitation. After extracting concept definitions and determining characteristic features, therapeutic communication in nursing students was defined. Then, sample cases, antecedents, consequences and empirical referents of concept were determined. Results: After assessing 30 articles, therapeutic communication defining attributes were as follows: "an important means in building interpersonal relationships", "a process of information transmission", "an important clinical competency", "a structure with two different sections" and "a significant tool in patient centered care". Furthermore, theoretical and clinical education and receiving educators' feedback regarding therapeutic communication were considered as antecedents of the concept. Improving physical and psychological health status of patient as well as professional development of nursing students were identified as consequences of the concept. Conclusion: Nursing instructors can use these results in order to teach and evaluate therapeutic communication in nursing students and train qualified nurses. Also, nursing students may apply the results to improve the quality of their interactions with patients, perform their various duties and meet patients' diverse needs.
