This study was done to compare the efficacy and tolerability of lornoxicam and diclofenac in the treatment of patients suffering from osteoarthritis over 32 weeks. A randomized, open, parallel-group trial of patients with OA of knee enrolled 223 patients. Out of 223 patients enrolled 216 patients participated in the study. The available patients were randomly divided into two groups. One group of 108 patients received lornoxicam 4-8 mg BID. for 32 weeks, another group of 108 patients received diclofenac 50-100 mg TID. for 32 weeks. Assessments were made at baseline, 4 weeks, 8 weeks and then every 10 weeks. They comprised pain score, adverse reactions and withdrawals. The VAS score was reduced in lornoxicam group by 22.51% and 19.16% in diclofenac group. These values were significant from baseline values in both the groups and reduction in lornoxicam group was significant in comparison to diclofenac group. During the next 22 weeks pain inte...

This study investigated whether there are differences in the pharmacology and pharmacotherapy knowledge between medical students and interns after their undergraduate training. Differences could serve as a starting point from which integrated educational programmes can be developed for better MBBS education. Methods: In a cross-sectional design, the knowledge of medical students and interns were assessed, using a standardized test with four domains (Emergency conditions, cardiovascular pharmacology, analgesics and Chemotherapy). Results: One hundred medical students and one hundred interns were included in the cross-sectional questionnaire based study. The response rate was 91.36% for MBBS and 98.16% for Interns. Interns had better knowledge of Cardivascular pharmacology than medical students (mean score of Interns 4.53± 1.3; MBBS 2.35± 1.2).In addition, data related to drugs used in emergency and chemotherapy showed much better knowledge of the interns (mean score of Interns 2.24± 0.7; & MBBS 1.97± 0.7) and (mean score of Interns 4.12± 1.05 & MBBS 3.5± 1.23) respectively. However, the two groups had almost similar knowledge of analgesic use and dosage (mean score of Interns 2.53± 0.78 & MBBS 2.41± 0.93). Conclusions: Interns have better knowledge of basic pharmacology and of the application of knowledge of pharmacology than medical students. Differences in knowledge and skills therefore might well stem from their undergraduate education. Knowledge of these differences could be harnessed to develop an integrated teaching programme for medical students.

Material and Methods-Effects of the test compound BK-vi on the amplitude, heart rate and coronary flow on isolated perfused rabbit heart was compared with nifedipine.Observations were made with increasing concentrations of BK-vi and Nifedipine with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as the solvent.Six preparations were used for each dose of BK-vi and nifedipine.Heart rate ,amplitude and coronary flow were noted down every minute for five minutes after injection of each drug and control. Results-On comparing the effects of BK-vi and nifedipine, it was found that both had a negative inotropic and negative chronotropic effect. Compound BK-vi did not produce significant effect on heart rate at all the four doses. In comparison, nifedipine produced a significant to highly significant decrease in heart rate.Significant decrease in amplitude with BK-vi was seen at dose of 7.29 X 10-4M and 14.5 X 10-4M by 42% and 56.98% respectively and in coronary flow by 39.95% at dose of 14.5 X 10-4M .Nifedipine significantly decreased heart rate and amplitude at all doses with cardiac arrest at 4.6 X 10-5M.A significant increase in coronary flow was seen with nifedipine by 9.4% and 13% at doses of 0.5 X 10-5M and 1.15 X 10-5M respectively though this property was lost at higher doses. On comparison, BK-vi produced significant myocardial depression at much higher dose than nifedipine. Conclusion-BK-vi has calcium channel blocking activity like nifedipine and produced less potent myocardial depression in comparison with nifedipine.
