Since the etiology of OLP is unknown, efforts to understand the etiology and pathogenecity may lead to improve treatment modalities. Studies have shown the different levels of increase or decrease of various cytokines in saliva, serum or tissue culture of patients with OLP.As saliva originates from blood and its collection is an easy, non-invasive method, so it can be a diagnostic fl uid that has logistical advantages when compared with serum. The purpose of this study was to compare the salivary level of IL17 and IL22 in patients with and without OLP. Saliva of 52 patients with and without OLP was collected. The saliva level of IL17 and IL 22 was measured by using ELISA. Data were analyzed using independent T test, Mann-Whitney and Pearson Correlation test. The saliva concentration of IL 22 was significantly higher in control group than OLP but the difference was not signifi cant between reticular and atrophic-erosive type (P > 0.05).The difference between mean rank of IL17 for OLP and healthy cases and between reticular and erosive-atrophic form was not signifi cant (P > 0.05). There was no correlation between the level of IL17 and IL 22 (P > 0.05). Our fi ndings suggest that IL 22 may have an effect in the pathogenesis of OLP and its protective effect may be decreased in OLP patients.

Multiple causes have been suggested for TMDs; parafunctional habits such as bruxism and clenching are among the most commonly suggested etiologies. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of the amendment of oral parafunctional habits in the improvement of TMDs and neck pain. Materials and Methods: This before-and-after interventional study was conducted on 136 patients with TMDs, parafunctional habits, and neck pain. The patients were instructed on how to quit their parafunctional habits and were followed up for two months. The neck pain disability index (NPDI), anamnestic dysfunction index (Ai), and clinical dysfunction index (Di) of TMD were evaluated before and after the modification of parafunctional habits. Data were analyzed using paired Student's t-test, Wilcoxon, Mann-U-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman tests. P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Most TMD patients were women (74.5%). The patients' scores significantly decreased from 4 to 1 in the Ai, from 8 to 1 in the Di, and from 49 to 25 in the NPDI two months after the intervention (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the NPDI, Ai, and Di scores following the amendment of oral parafunctional habits between males and females or among different age ranges. Age did not significantly correlate with the changes in the NPDI, Ai, and Di scores after the improvement of oral parafunctional habits. The NPDI significantly correlated with the Ai score. Conclusion: It seems that parafunctional habit modification improves TMDs and neck pain.

Metastases in mouth soft tissue are also rare, and within these it is on the gums where they more frequently occur. Primary tumors which metastasize to the mouth are most commonly: lung, breast, and kidney. Clear cell carcinoma is the most frequent cancer of the kidney (60-80% of cases). This tumor has a great propensity to metastasis. We report a case of a 45-year-old man with renal cell carcinoma in which the gingival symptoms (metastatic tumor) preceded the discovery of the primary lesions.

Sixteen plates of oral cancer cells originated from tongue SCC were irradiated with diode laser at 660 nm (40 and 80 mW) and 810 nm (100 and 200 mW) with the energy density of 4 J cm−2. One plate received no irradiation (the control). Irradiation was performed at four times (0, 24, 72 and 168 h). Cell proliferation was measured by MTT assay. The Ki67 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) markers were examined by real‐time polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR). Cyclin D1, E‐cadherin, β‐catenin and matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP‐9; flow cytometry) were also evaluated. Proliferation was lower in the irradiated groups. This result was significant for all groups at 24 h. The percentages of cyclin D1 and MMP‐9 were higher in 810 nm groups, β‐catenin and E‐cadherin were higher in 660 nm groups, VEGF marker was significantly lower in 810 nm/200 mW group, and Ki67 marker has no difference between the groups. According to the results of this study, laser irradiation at 0 and 24 h resulted in a significant inhibitory effect on cell proliferation especially in 660 nm/80 mW and 810 nm/200 mW. Further studies are needed in this respect.

The prevalence of Candida species is different worldwide because of the difference between population characteristics, sampling protocols, and geographic regions. Therefore, determining the more prevalent Candida species in different geographic regions seems essential. This study aimed to determine the more prevalent Candida species in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients in comparison with healthy individuals in Iran in 2016. Materials and Methods: Fifty-one patients with AML and 62 healthy controls participated in this cross-sectional study. Samples were collected using a swab rubbed softly on the dorsal surface of the tongue and the oropharynx. The samples were cultured on CHROMagar Candida for 2 to 4 days. For differentiation between albicans and non-albicans species, positive samples were linearly inoculated on Corn Meal Agar with Tween-80. Candida species were...

This is mostly related to the manner of communication and interaction with the patient and active listening to his/her statements. Registering the information related to the illness and its history has an effective role in patient satisfaction, treatment outcomes, and dental expenses and even in lawsuits against practitioners. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the average time allocated by general dentists and senior dental students of the dental school of Tehran University of Medical Sciences to obtain the history of the patient's present illness during 2012-2013. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, 60 senior dental students of the dental school of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and 60 general dentists that had been graduated at least five years ago were selected. Each of them randomly selected three patients and recorded the patients' demographics such as age, gender, education level, and the chief complaint or the main reason of the patient's visit. The duration of the patient's statements regarding the present illness and its history was recorded in seconds in the designed questionnaire. Afterwards, the data were analyzed using T-test and Mann-U-Whitney, Kendall-tau and Chi-square tests. Results: The average interview time in the students and dentists groups was 24.41±9.17 seconds and 27.9±7.82 seconds, respectively, which were significantly different according to T-test (p=0.003). Generally, the longest allocated time equaled 49 seconds, while the shortest interview duration was 6 seconds. Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, it seems that dentists do not allocate the necessary and adequate time to gather information about the chief complaint and the history of the patient's reason of referral to guide them towards the correct diagnosis and suitable treatment method, and even the passage of time and the level of experience have no effect on this issue.

This study aims to assess if low‐level laser can promote dysplastic changes while the method can play an important role in management of dysplastic lesions. Dysplasia was induced on anterior wall of the buccal pouch of 80 young Syrian male hamsters. Then, hamsters were divided to four groups to receive 4 and 12 sessions irradiation of 660 and 810 nanometers low‐level lasers. For histopathologic study of the tissue, we used light microscopes. Using SPSS, data were analyzed via Wilcoxon signed rank test and Mann–Whitney U‐test. In all of our four groups, the severity of dysplasia had no statistical difference in study sides comparing with their own controls. Wavelength and numbers of laser irradiation sessions ha...

Its treatment is often symptomatic and includes topical and systemic corticosteroids. Although corticosteroid therapy is usually successful, it has side effects and thus, an alternative treatment is favorable. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of topical curcumin and triamcinolone for treatment of oral lichen planus (OLP). In this study, 50 patients (36 women and 14 men) in the age range of 38 to 73 years with OLP were randomly divided into two groups. Each group received 0.1% triamcinolone or 5% curcumin oral paste three times a day for four weeks. Assessment of the appearance score and severity of pain was done at baseline and at the end of two and four weeks and recorded in the patients' questionnaires. The data were analyzed by SPSS 17 software, using the Mann-Whitney and Spearman's tests. With respect to pain reduction, nine patients (36%) in the curcumin group and eight patients (32%) i...
