Background: Inmates of old age homes have received less attention in research than those residing... more Background: Inmates of old age homes have received less attention in research than those residing in community especially in India Objectives: This study assesses the sociodemographic factors, physical illnesses, psychiatric morbidity, coping strategies, stressful life events of inmates residing in old age home. Method: A cross-sectional study, elderly inmates of two branches of old age home in Saroor nagar in Hyderabad who fulfilled inclusion criteria, were given GHQ, MINI, MMSE, PSLES, CCL, and GDS and modified Kuppuswamy scale for socioeconomic status. The two groups were compared using appropriate statistical results. Results: The prevalence of depression in current study was 26%,GAD was found in 2%,Psychosis in 2%, Cognitive impairment was found in 10%.The risk factors for depression in our study are female sex, widowed status, urban back ground , nuclear family, low socioeconomic status, lesser education. All inmates were found to have physical illness(100%).Subjects with mental illness used emotion focused ,denial subtype coping strategy those without mental illness use d more religious subtype .subjects with mental illness used less of problem solving and problem and emotion solving coping than those with out mental illness. Stressful life events are more in those with mental illness than those with out mental illness. There was no association between medical and psychiatric morbidity. GDRS scores were significantly higher in depressed inmates rarely visited by family members. Conclusion: This study highlights the need for more epidemiological studies to improve mental health care among this growing set of population. Nuclear family appears to be risk factor for depression.

Design: 667 alcohol-dependent patients attending the institute of mental health, Hyderabad during the 1st phase of lockdown were studied retrospectively with the help of hospital records. Results: Out of 667 samples 266 individuals presented with delirium. There is no significance of sociodemographic factors on delirium except sex. There is a positive correlation between severity of dependence (r=0.26, p=0.000), number of drinks (r=0.271, p=0.000) per day, duration of intake of substance (r=0.137, p=0.000) with delirium. Individuals with medical comorbidity hypertension, both hypertension and diabetes have presented a greater number of delirium cases. Tobacco consumption may predispose or worsen the psychiatric illnesses. Aims: To study the prevalence of tobacco use among psychiatric in-patients and to study the association between various sociodemographic variables and clinical variables with tobacco use. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among psychiatric in -patients (n=200) at a tertiary care psychiatric hospital. Consecutive sampling technique was applied. A semi-structured proforma was applied to capture the socio-demographic and clinical details of the participants. The Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) was applied to assess for the tobacco dependence. Results: Prevalence of current tobacco use among the study population was 39.5%. The population of elderly is growing globally and so are the physical illness and cognitive impai... more The population of elderly is growing globally and so are the physical illness and cognitive impairment. This study was planned to assess the prevalence of cognitive impairment and pattern of physical morbidity and association between cognitive impairment and physical morbidity. The study was conducted in Gold-age old age home in Saroor nagar, Hyderabad in between Feb 2014-April-2014. The elderly subjects 50 were selected by simple random sampling technique and assessed on MMSE, MINI plus, GHQ, GDRS. The prevalence of cognitive impairment among inmates of old age home was found to be 38%. Cognitive impairment was associated with age (p value=0.024), female sex (p value=0.426), low socioeconomic status(p value=0.469), less education (p value=0.04), nuclear family (p value=0.06), widow, unmarried status (p value=0.627). Only when the condition becomes worse, do they seek psychiatrist consultation leading to delay in treatment. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted to understand the pathway of care adopted by persons with mental illness and its relationship with sociodemographic variables. In our study population, 250 patients visiting a psychiatric outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital were interviewed on a semi structured questionnaire for various services contacted by them for their mental health problems. Aim: To study and compare psychiatric morbidity ,medical morbidity, QOL, coping skills, stressful life events of elderly adults residing in old age home (OAH) and community.
