One of the recurring problems presented by literary histories is that of explaining what it means... more One of the recurring problems presented by literary histories is that of explaining what it means to say that kinds of writing change. At first glance this seems to be a relatively easy thing to do, for all that it seems to require is that we show that certain features in writing forms are replaced by others-often for social or political reasons as much as for literary reasons-and that our task is essentially one of identifying genre characteristics upon which such changes might be mapped. As such, understanding the formal characteristics of, or continuity within, a genre might appear to be more problematic than understanding how genres change or how individual works signal changes in or developments of genres.
