Research paper thumbnail of Erythrocyte and iron profiles in soil-transmitted helminth-infected children in a rural area in Banten, Indonesia

Medical Journal of Indonesia, Mar 26, 2024

BACKGROUND Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection, frequently caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, ... more BACKGROUND Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection, frequently caused by Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), often gives rise to malabsorption of nutrients that form hemoglobin (Hb) thereby causing anemia. This study aimed to know the difference in erythrocyte profile in children with and without STH infections. METHODS This cross-sectional study involved 205 children from two Panimbang Jaya elementary schools in Pandeglang, Banten, Indonesia. Blood and stool samples were collected from a previous study conducted from November 2021 to May 2022. Erythrocyte parameters were Hb concentration, erythrocyte count, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular Hb (MCH), and red cell distribution width (RDW). The iron profile included serum iron, total iron-biding capacity (TIBC), and ferritin. Worm infestation was detected by direct stool microscopical examination. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 20. RESULTS The prevalence of STH infection in Pandeglang was 44.4%, primarily characterized by mild intensity STH infection (79%). The identified STH species were A. lumbricoides, T. trichiura, and combination of both. The median differences between erythrocyte count, MCV, and MCH, and the mean differences of TIBC and serum iron were not statistically significant (p = 0.388, 0.098, and 0.057, and p = 0.304 and 0.455). However, children with STH infection had lower Hb (12.57 versus 12.95 g/dl) and ferritin (19.60 versus 30.57 µg/dl) levels but higher RDW (13.20 versus 13.10%). CONCLUSIONS A high prevalence of STH infection was identified among schoolchildren, but their erythrocyte profiles were similar regardless of STH infection status.

Several lipopeptides exhibit narrow and broad-spectrum inhibition activities. e aim of the study is to characterize the lipopeptides produced by B. amyloliquefaciens strain MD4-12 and evaluate the synergistic antimicrobial activity in combination with a conventional antibiotic against Gram-negative bacteria. B. amyloliquefaciens strain MD4-12 was isolated from oil-contaminated soil. e isolate was cultivated in McKeen medium, and the lipopeptides were isolated by precipitation and extraction with methanol. Characterization of the lipopeptides by ESI-MS gave nine mass ion peaks with m/z 994-1072, resulted from protonating of the main ions in [M + H] + and [M + Na] + ion form. ese mass ion peaks attributed to surfactin homologs. By tandem mass spectrometry, five variants of surfactin with the same amino acid sequence in peptide moiety could be revealed. e peptide moiety contains seven amino acids identified as Glu-Leu/Ile-Leu-Val-Asp-Leu-Leu/Ile while the fatty acid moiety comprises a different length of chain from C 12 to C 16. Surfactin showed antibacterial activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Combination surfactin with ampicillin showed a synergistic effect against P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853.

Background: The protective effects of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) to the health of infants and ... more Background: The protective effects of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) to the health of infants and mothers alike have been well documented. The rates of EBF remain low in spite of the recognized benefits and the persistent global call for infants to be breastfed exclusively on breast milk for the first six months of life. Health education has been widely suggested as one of the key intervention strategies for increasing the duration of EBF in low income countries. Objective: To conduct a systematic review to assess the effectiveness of health education interventions in increasing the duration of EBF in low income countries. A secondary objective of the review was to identify the theoretical bases of both effective/non-effective interventions and also to identify the educational methods that were utilized. Methods: Systematic review of experimental and quasi-experimental studies of health education interventions that evaluated exclusive breastfeeding outcome. Studies not published in English language and studies not reporting exclusive breastfeeding outcome were excluded. A narrative synthesis was used. Data Sources: Studies dating from 1980-2013 in English language were searched in the following databases: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar search engine. Results: Twelve (12) studies were identified. Five were randomized controlled trials and additional three were before-after studies with control groups. The remaining four were non-randomized controlled trial. Only one study applied a theoretical framework in developing and implementing the intervention. EBF rate was significantly higher in the intervention groups compared with the control groups in ten (10) of the studies. The remaining two (2) studies reported no difference in EBF rates between the intervention groups and the control groups. Most of the studies reviewed had important methodological limitations. Conclusion: Because of the methodological limitations of most of the included studies, firm conclusion on the effectiveness of health education interventions in increasing the duration of exclusive breastfeeding in low income countries cannot be made. Nonetheless there is a potential for this to be achieved if more methodologically rigorous health education interventions are developed and evaluated in low income countries.

The purpose of this study aimed to know the effectiveness of double doses 500 mg mebendazole againts soil transmitted helminths (STH) infection in children aged 2-15 years. This study used a pre post design, conducted on July 2016-February 2017 in Perobatang village, Southwest Sumba. Effectiveness is assessed from CR and egg reduction rate (ERR). Stool samples were examined microscopically with Kato-Katz method. In total of 89 subjects, prevalence of STH, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura infections were 79.8%, 46.1% and 76.4%. After administration of double dose 500 mg mebendazole the prevalence decresed to 39.3%, 2.2%, 39.3%. CR of A.lumbricoides was 95.1% and T.trichiura was 48.5% while ERR of each infection was 97.98% and 69.73%. There were significant difference in prevalence and ERR before and after treatment (p<0.001). In conclusions double doses 500 mg mebendazole was effective in treating A.lumbricoides but was not for T.trichiura. However, CR and ERR of double dose 500 mg mebendazole againts T.trichiura are higher than single doses. &nbsp
