On the other hand, neural network models using an only distributional representation of words have been successfully applied for several NLP tasks. Such models learn features automatically and avoid explicit feature engineering. Across several domains, neural models become a natural choice specifically when limited characteristics of data are known. However, this flexibility comes at the cost of interpretability. In this paper, we define three different methods to investigate ability of bi-directional recurrent neural networks (RNNs) in capturing contextual features. In particular, we analyze RNNs for sequence tagging tasks. We perform a comprehensive analysis on general as well as biomedical domain datasets. Our experiments focus on important contextual words as features, which can easily be extended to analyze various other feature types. We also inv...

Synergistic effects lead to improved therapeutic outcomes, whereas, antagonistic effects can be life-threatening, may lead to increased healthcare cost, or may even cause death. Thus identification of unknown drug-drug interaction (DDI) is an important concern for efficient and effective healthcare. Although multiple resources for DDI exist, they are often unable to keep pace with rich amount of information available in fast growing biomedical texts. Most existing methods model DDI extraction from text as a classification problem and mainly rely on handcrafted features. Some of these features further depend on domain specific tools. Recently neural network models using latent features have been shown to give similar or better performance than the other existing models dependent on handcrafted features. In this paper, we present three models nam...

The study was conducted during February 2014 to January 2015 from different farms and market shops in and around Darbhanga town. In all 296 birds were examined and average over all prevalence was found as 156 (52.70%) and with cestodes 58 (19.59%), nematodes 76 (25.67%) and mixed 22 (7.43%), thus in an order of nematodes> cestodes> mixed ones. Among the cestodes Raillietina and Davainea infection and among nematodes Ascaridia and Heterakis were found common with prevalence as 19.25%, 4.05%, 23.98% and 5.40% respectively. Further, seasonal prevalence showed higher during summer (60.79%) followed by rainy (52.48%) and lowest during winter (37.83%) (F2,6=7.4 at p>0.05). Thus the study indicated higher prevalence of helminthic infection particularly Raillietina (cestode) and Ascaridia (nematode) during summer season (F3,6 =23.93 at p>0.001) & LSD=5.63 in ...

Studies on the evolution of the same parasites in different hosts are extremely attractive and highly relevant to our understanding of divergence and speciation. Here we presented the first molecular evidence of divergence of Equus roundworms in different hosts (horses, zebras and donkeys). At the genetic level, Equus roundworms were mainly separated into two clades (Horse-derived and Zebra & Donkey-derived). This divergence began at 600–1500 years ago, which interestingly coincided with the domestication history of horses. We found that most of the key enzymes related to glycolysis were under strong positive selection in zebra & donkey-derived roundworms, indicating that the evolution of the metabolic level was one of the main reasons for the divergence. In addition, we conducted a selective scan of resistance-related genes and found that the three populations were under different degre...

The retrofit analysis is used as an example of a design process based on high-fidelity CFD simulations and surrogate modelling. The bulbous bow design candidates are generated through a parametric modification of the original bow geometry. The alternative designs are evaluated using the open-source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM and the computed effective power predictions are used to rank each design across the entire operating profile. Additionally, the influence of the alternative bulb designs on the wave-making resistance and the propeller performance is examined in detail. Surrogate models are then used to explore the parameterized design space and to establish a sequence of design exploration and exploitation cycles in the retrofit analysis with the ultimate goal of generating an improved bow shape.

In Maliguda village, where 95 per cent spray coverage was achieved and the spray surfaces were retained without mud plastering up to 29 and 60 days in first and second round of the spray respectively, malaria cases reduced by 72 per cent after spray for a period of two months. In Dandabedha village with 85 per cent coverage and immediate mud plastering, the malaria cases reduced by 49 per cent. It is concluded that even though mud plastering reduces the effectiveness of the residual spraying to a certain extent, timely spray and better coverage with correct dosage can still effectively reduce the malaria incidence.

Research paper thumbnail of Glutathione S Transferase Activity in Indian Vectors of Malaria: A Defense Mechanism Against DDT

SigniÞcance of insect GSTs is their elevated level of activity in association with insecticide resistance. This investigation was to explore the metabolic status of GSTs in two Indian DDT-resistant malaria vectors, Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles annularis, and one DDT-susceptible vector, Anopheles fluviatilis. Malkangiri and Koraput districts of Orissa State, endemic for falciparum malaria and having a long insecticide spraying history, were the study areas. F 1 progeny was raised from wild-caught females of the three vectors and used for biochemical assays to detect the GST-mediated DDT resistance mechanism. Results of the enzyme assay showed a signiÞcant 3-fold increase in GST activity in DDT-resistant An. annularis compared with its susceptible population. In DDT-resistant An. culicifacies, the median GST activity (71.8 mol/min/mg) was almost the same as estimated in the DDT-resistant An. annularis (74.6 mol/ min/mg), suggesting that the GST activity estimated in An. culicifacies could be an elevated level for detoxiÞcation of DDT. Furthermore, the GST activity in DDT-resistant An. culicifacies and An. annularis was signiÞcantly higher than that in the DDT-susceptible An. fluviatilis, which had a GST activity of 20.0 mol/min/mg. Also, the GST-mediated DDT detoxiÞcation was conÞrmed by comparing GST activity in wild-caught females with that in their F 1 progeny. In this paper, we report the intracellular synthesis of silver nanoparticles (SNPs) by the highly silver-tolerant marine bacterium, Idiomarina sp. PR58-8 on exposure to 5 mM silver nitrate. SNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). UV-visible absorption scan of a 48 h culture exposed to 5 mM silver nitrate revealed a broad peak at 450 nm indicative of the surface plasmon resonance of SNPs. XRD analysis confirmed the presence of elemental silver and the crystallite size was calculated to be 25 nm using Scherrer formula. The average particle size as per TEM analysis was found to be 26 nm. Metal stress is known to induce the production of non-protein thiols (NP-SHs) which sequester metal ions. In this study, the production of NP-SHs was followed from 6-48 h, wherein it was observed that the NP-SH levels in the silver-exposed culture were consistently higher (261% on an average) than in the unexposed culture.

Research paper thumbnail of DDT indoor residual spray, still an effective tool to control Anopheles fluviatilis-transmitted Plasmodium falciparum malaria in India

Tropical Medicine & International Health, 2005

This study from two districts of Orissa State which are endemic for Plasmodium falciparum transmi... more This study from two districts of Orissa State which are endemic for Plasmodium falciparum transmitted by Anopheles fluviatilis and A. culicifacies investigated the impact of dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) indoor residual spraying, in view of the ongoing discussion on phasing out DDT in India. Based on their high annual parasite incidence and logistical considerations, 26 villages in Malkangiri and 28 in Koraput district were selected for DDT spraying. For comparison, six and four unsprayed villages were chosen from the same districts. In each district, the prevalence of malaria infection and incidence of malaria fever, indoor resting density and parous rate of the vectors, and their susceptibility to DDT were monitored in six and three villages selected randomly from the sprayed and unsprayed groups respectively. Anopheles fluviatilis was susceptible to DDT while A. culicifacies was resistant. DDT residual spraying with 1 g/m 2 , was carried out in October-November 2001. Spraying 74-86% of human dwellings and 100% of cattle sheds brought down the indoor resting density of A. fluviatilis by 93-95%. This was associated with a significant reduction of incidence of malaria fever as well as prevalence of malaria infection from November to February in both districts. The spraying also seemed to impact on vector longevity, and a residual effect of DDT on the sprayed walls was observed up to 10-12 weeks despite re-plastering. Hence DDT spraying can still be an effective tool for controlling fluviatilis-transmitted malaria. Although this species is exophilic, its nocturnal resting behaviour facilitates its contact with the sprayed surfaces. DDT is still useful for residual spraying in India, particularly in areas where the vectors are endophilic and not resistant.

String cloud cosmological models are studied using spatially homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi ... more String cloud cosmological models are studied using spatially homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi type VI0 metric in Saez-Ballester Scalar-Tensor theory of gravitation. The field equations are solved for massive string cloud with particles attached to them. A more general linear equation of state of the cosmic string tension density with the proper energy density of the universe is considered instead of taking any particular relationships like pure geometric string or the case of the p-string. The pure geometric string and p-string solutions can be easily inferred from the models. For all viable models the possible limiting values of the linear connection between the proper energy density and string tension density have been calculated. The physical and kinematical properties of the models have been discussed in detail.

A modified version of the CDC miniature light trap was used in the study. The data generated from light trap collections were analysed and compared with daytime resting, man-biting and night resting collections carded out in parallel. The number per trap recorded in cattle sheds was significantly higher than that recorded in human dwellings. A similar pattern was observed in hand catches of indoor resting population though the difference was not significant. The density recorded from light traps over time was found to have a significant positive linear association with corresponding indoor (r=0.625; p=0.0019) as well as outdoor (r=0.603; p=0.0029) diurnal resting densities. The proportion with different gonotrophic stages varied significantly between different types of collections. The age structure of A. fluviatilis did not differ significantly with the types of collection. As the light trap catches reflect seasonal fluctuations in the diurnal resting collections, they can justifiably be used in monitoring the relative density of A. fluviatilis in the place of cumbersome hand catch methods. Other uses of light traps are also discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of Reliability of light trap sampling for Anopheles fluviatilis, a vector of malaria
