Implementation of such programs worldwide provides many examples of how education and support for fathers and fathers-to-be can promote healthy masculinities and relationships with an intimate partner and their children. This article aims to explore the findings and lessons learned from the pilot of the European Union-funded Promotion, Awareness Raising and Engagement of men in Nurture Transformations (PARENT) project (PARENT) which sought to develop and pilot curricula adapted from the internationally tested Program P methodology. The PARENT pilot worked in four European countries to provide training activities for social, educational, and health professionals, as well as education groups for fathers and parents, with the overarching goal of preventing domestic violence through the promotion of engaged fatherhood. Gender equality is one of the founding values of the EU and Member States have established the pr... more Gender equality is one of the founding values of the EU and Member States have established the promotion of the equality of men and women in the labour market, as well as in their work-life balance and responsibilities as priorities for the EU. Data shows that increasingly women and men work outside the home, but, at the same time, women remain the main household caregivers and take on a double burden in the private domain. Although true equality between men and women will only be achieved when men take on 50 percent of the caregiving and domestic work, equal distribution is the exception rather than the rule. Only about one third of European heterosexual couples report equal sharing of care and domestic work in their households. While this is a low number given the extent of efforts to promote gender equality and women's labor market involvement, it is also a sign of progress and an indication that positive change and equality are attainable. This report explores trends in men's caregiving in Europe (with a particular focus on fatherhood) and five key areas for change: implementing laws and policies to promote gender equality; transforming gender norms that reproduce harmful gender stereotypes; supporting the physical and financial security of families; helping couples and co-parents thrive together; and, putting fathers care into action. The main objective of the State of Europe´s Fathers is to contribute to theoretical and policy approaches that understand how gender equality, including caregiving, constitutes a collective social good to be promoted in general and in particular in times of crisis and develop an evidence-based and detailed roadmap for social policies toward gender equality and men's greater participation in caregiving. By taking into account the current state-of-the-art of gender-based violence prevention and gender justice, this report focuses on concrete strategies for promoting gender equality in Europe and the engagement of men in caregiving and unpaid care work as a way to prevent gender-based violence and promote healthy and more equal gender relations.

Gender dimensions of violence, and especially women's experiences in settings of urban violence h... more Gender dimensions of violence, and especially women's experiences in settings of urban violence have been the subject of important feminist research, including those that highlight gender as essential for comprehensive analyses of security and urban violence, and for promoting solutions and positive change. A primary contribution of feminist research indeed has been to demonstrate that there are both visible and invisible aspects of urban violence. A gap in literature on these gender dimensions is that of men's construction of masculinitiesand how these constructions are challenged during times. An important set of invisible phenomena within urban spaces and their peripheries includes the positive and decolonial responses that occur, including non-violent and feminist cultural and artistic pathways and the factors that lead men to resist to dominant, violent, or 'hyper' versions of masculinities. While there is a predominate focus on men's involvement in violence, far less attention has been placed on men's non-violent pathways. Based on examples of cultural, artistic and activist practices from the peripheries, namely those emerging in Rio de Janeiro, this article aims to discuss how artivism can challenge gender inequalities and power relations.

Taking as a point of departure the structural and structuring violence that marks postcolonies, such as Brazil, we question the dynamics of racial-gendered violence that reproduce the imbricated norms, standards and pacts of hegemonic masculinities. In this way, we propose a dialogue with peripherized artistic-cultural practices that reshape how we incorporate such idealizations of gender. To this end, we focus on the production of the performance Na Manha-developed within the scope of the artistic residency of the GlobalGRACE (Global Gender and Cultures of Equality) research-action project, with the Dance Company Passinho Carioca and under the direction of the dance collective Mulheres ao Vento (Women in the Wind) in Rio de Janeiro.

Oficina do CES, 2010

Instead of focussing on the operational gaps hindering the implementation of the United Nations S... more Instead of focussing on the operational gaps hindering the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000), this article argues that gaps are mostly product of the concepts of gender, violence, security that inform the Resolution. Two particular criticisms that have emerged in the analysis of 1325 will be addressed: i) the equation of violence as war, and particularly the equation of war gendered violence as violence suffered by women and girls only; and consequently ii) the idea of war and postwar at the domestic level as the main source of insecurity for women, the international community (of non-warring States) being the main guarantor of peace and security. By emphasising the articulations between war and peace zones both domestically and internationally, this paper will elaborate on one of the facets of violence production and reproduction omitted by the Resolution: armed violence in non war zones.

article proposes to explore how dominant and hegemonic masculinities are
being reimagined, renegotiated and reconstructed, by understanding new
patterns of violence amongst boys, on the one hand; and how care, as the
opposite of violence, and a concept in construction from a feminist perspective,
can be adopted, put in practise and understood. From a feminist standpoint
masculinities studies need to go through a renewed problematisation of the
social constructions of masculinities in a space–time context that intersects
the economic crisis, health crisis and, on the other hand, implementation of
legislation and initiatives for gender equality and citizenship, and is marked by
social challenges that are related to the increase of gender inequality, violence
indicators and extremism but also the emergence of caring masculinities that
need closer attention. This feminist approach to masculinities allows us to
critically challenge hegemonic models of boyhood/manhood, specifically by
developing a FEMINIST THEORY OF CARING MASCULINITIES. Through a critical
understanding of the new patterns and ways in which patriarchal masculinities
are perpetuated in society, and placing CARE as the centrepiece and pro-active
practise that opposes violence sustained models of masculinities, feminist
masculinities studies can challenge dominant forms of masculinity by taking
action in diverse social contexts and emphasising empathy, emotional
expression, and cooperative relationships.
