The total number of the sources as well as their intensities and locations on the two-dimensional grid are assumed unknown and the intensities of the sources are not necessarily identical. The distribution of the source intensity on the grid, which contains all the information about the sources, is obtained by solving a convex optimization problem. With the source distribution interpreted as a two-dimensional gray-level image, the sources are determined as the centroids of the objects in the image. Given the number of sources and the source locations, the source intensities are estimated by solving a linear least-squares problem.

The aim of this study was to assess the use of 99Tcm-dextran in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) blood leaks. Twenty-one patients with GI blood loss underwent 99Tcm-dextran scintigraphy, 17 of whom were found to be positive. Pathologic or 99Tcm-RBC (red blood cell) blood pool correlation was possible in 15 cases, while 2 were unconfirmed. No case had a positive 99Tcm-RBC blood pool study and a negative 99Tcm-dextran study. Images obtained with 99Tcm-dextran were generally better than those with 99Tcm-RBC. This agent may have several other advantages over 99Tcm-RBC blood pool and 99Tcm-sulphur colloid scintigraphy for detecting GI blood loss.
Gene duplication and sequence divergence are driving forces toward establishing protein families.... more Gene duplication and sequence divergence are driving forces toward establishing protein families. To examine how sequence changes affect carbohydrate specificity the two closely related prototype chicken galectins CG-14 and CG-16 were selected as models. Binding properties were analyzed using a highly sensitive solid-phase assay. We tested 56 free saccharides and 34 well-defined glycoproteins. The two galectins share preference for the II vs. I version of β-galactosides. A pronounced difference is found due to the reactivity of CG-14 with histo-blood group ABH active oligosaccharides and A/B active glycoproteins. These experimental results prompted to determine activity-structure correlations by modeling. Computational analysis included consideration of flexibility of binding partners and presence of water molecules. It provided a comparative description of complete carbohydrate recognition domains, which had so far not been characterized in animal galectins. The structural models assigned II, I selectivity to a region downstream of the central Trp moiety. Docking revealed that the tetrasaccharides can be accommodated in their free-state lowenergy conformations. CG-14's preference for A vs. B epitopes could be attributed to a contact between His124 and the N-acetyl group of GalNAc. Regarding inter-galectin comparison, the Ala53/Cys51 exchange affects the interaction potential of His54/His52. Close inspection of simulated dynamic interplay revealed reorientation of His124 at the site of the His124/Glu123 substitution with potential impact on ligand dissociation. In summary, this study identifies activity differences and provides information on their relation to structural divergence, epitomizing the value of this combined approach beyond galectins.

The proposed algorithms, which are formulated within the convex optimization framework, employ linear dynamic feedback structure involving local Luenberger-type observers. It is also shown how the new methodology can produce improved results if interconnections have linear parts that are known a priori. Examples of output stabilization of inverted pendulums and decentralized control of a platoon of vehicles are used to illustrate the applicability of the design method.

The weights for the first technique are derived based on the scaling factor for the potential energy in each mode, such that the modal displacement is the same. The second technique exploits the modal cost analysis which uses the angle between the right eigenvectors and the row vectors of the output matrix to determine the contribution of each mode to the output. Two examples are used to illustrate the improvement in performance of the modal weighted minimax shapers compared to the traditional minimax shaper which equally weighs all the modes.

This implies our experience of a stimulus is not simply a reflection of its intrinsic properties but depends on the social-contextual meanings attributed to it. Following Bruner (Bruner, 1957; Bruner & Goodman, 1947), psychology has confirmed the importance of social meaning for perception-especially visual information processing (Balcetis & Lassiter, 2010).
