This research conducted on schools, initially together with Ernesto N. Rogers, later resulted in various built works in which the school activities, by means of a progressive “typological expansion”, were joined by extensive work on function which enabled the transformation of the traditional school building into a public building.

Through these projects, various reconstruction strategies were verified, differentiated according to the specific settlement, historical and structural characteristics, in order to pinpoint distinct lines of intervention consistent with the recognizable and recoverable potential of each individual context.

Four schools have been compared: the Escuela de Arquitectura y Diseño (PUCV) of Valparaíso; the Cooper Union of New York; the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP); the School of Civil Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Milan-Bovisa.

For over sixty years, the Valparaíso School has represented a singular episode in the international architectural scenario, and constitutes one of the most significant and astonishingly creative cultural phenomena in Latin America today, acknowledged for its original ideas and a capacity to conceive its own language. In this article, an attempt will be made to describe the peculiarities of its teaching by relating three essential moments of its didactic approa...

Through the PhD course in Architectural Composition at the IUAV of Venice, Luciano Semerani looked into architectural composition with ...

The game as a combinatorial process, as a capacity for assemblage like a montage, but also as an educational and pedagogical tool of knowledge and transformation of the world which ignores the conditions of reality since it spontaneously performs an abstraction. The game, as such, has its own rules which determine what will happen inside the temporary world it delimits, rules which are absolutely mandatory and irrefutable but can be encoded and transmitted.
