Research paper thumbnail of Genetic variants inIRF6and the risk of facial clefts: single-marker and haplotype-based analyses in a population-based case-control study of facial clefts in Norway

Genetic Epidemiology, Jul 1, 2008

Lip pits and missing teeth are the only additional features distinguishing the syndrome from isolated clefts. Van der Woude syndrome, therefore, provides an excellent model for studying the isolated forms of clefting. From a populationbased case-control study of facial clefts in Norway (1996-2001), we selected 377 cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P), 196 cleft palate only (CPO), and 763 control infant-parent triads for analysis. We genotyped six single nucleotide polymorphisms within the IRF6 locus and estimated the relative risks (RR) conferred on the child by alleles and haplotypes of the child and of the mother. On the whole, there were strong statistical associations with CL/P but not CPO in our data. In singlemarker analyses, mothers with a double-dose of the 'a'-allele at rs4844880 had an increased risk of having a child with CL/P (RR = 1.85, 95% confidence interval: 1.04-3.25; P = 0.036). An RR of 0.38 (95% confidence interval: 0.16-0.92; P = 0.031) was obtained when the child carried a singledose of the 'a'-allele at rs2235371 (the p.V274I polymorphism). The P-value for the overall test was <0.001. In haplotype analyses, several of the fetal and maternal haplotype relative risks were statistically significant individually but were not strong enough to show up on the overall test (P = 0.113). Taken together, these findings further support a role for IRF6 variants in clefting of the lip and provide specific risk estimates in a Norwegian population.

Research paper thumbnail of Research on the Dynamics of a Hydraulic Static-pile-pressing Machine during the Process of Lifting and Slewing of Piles

Journal of Computational & Applied Research in Mechanical Engineering (JCARME), Apr 13, 2020

Information about the dynamic loading of a steel structure is important for its static design as ... more Information about the dynamic loading of a steel structure is important for its static design as well as for an assessment of its fatigue life. In the case of a hydraulic static-pile-pressing machine, these loads are mainly caused by vibrations and load sway, which occurs as a result of the slewing motion of the boom around the vertical axis and from the radial movement of the load's suspension point. This paper presents the study of the dynamics of a hydraulic static-pile-pressing machine during the process of lifting and slewing a pile using a mounted crane. A six-degree-of-freedom non-linear spatial-dynamic model is employed and a non-linear mathematical model of the machine is formulated. To confirm the mathematical model, the comparison between the measured results and simulation results using the mathematical model shows that the mathematical model is reliable. These results can be used to optimize the machine design based on calculations of its dynamics, fatigue, life expectancy and stability from a dynamic point of view.

Surgical thymectomy is the radical treatment for thymoma. The recent introduction of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has improved the quality of thymectomy surgery. The clinical characteristics of thymoma and the outcomes of video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy in Vietnamese patients are still lacking. The objectives of this study were to investigate the clinical and laboratory characteristics of thymoma and to evaluate the early results of videoassisted thoracoscopic thymectomy for thymoma in Vietnamese patients. Methods: All 53 thymoma patients with or without myasthenia gravis who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy in Military Hospital 103, Vietnam, from October 2013 to July 2017 were included. Results: The mean age was 46.5 7.1 years, and the female/male ratio was 1.2:1. Myasthenia gravis, mostly stage IIA, was present in 84.9% of patients. There was no hospital mortality or major postoperative complication. The mean operative time was 65 min, intensive care unit stay was 22 AE 5 h, and postoperative hospital stay was 7.5 AE 1.7 days. Conclusion: Thoracoscopic thymectomy for thymoma in Vietnamese patients achieved improved cosmesis and was safe for both non-myasthenia gravis and myasthenia gravis patients.

Given a parallelized program, the compiler constructs graphs which represent globally and interprocedurally the remote reference penalties associated with different choices for loop scheduling and data allocation. After deriving an optimal solution according to those graphs, the compiler generates data allocation directives and schedules DOALL loops. Experiments indicate that the proposed compiler scheme is efficient and simulation results show good performance of the parallel code.

However, packaging plays a vital role in supporting and promoting improvements and innovation in the sustainable supply chain. In this context, the concern was that packaging companies were struggling to achieve green sustainability in the supply chain through eco-friendly packaging designs. The objective of this study was to analyze the link between green packaging and sustainability in supply chain in order to provide packaging companies with a comprehensive perspective of adopting a sustainable supply chain in terms of environmental, economic and social development. It was hoped that the information gained from this study could be generalized into a standard guideline for future firms so that they could reflect on themselves to gain sustainability successfully by adopting green packaging in the circular economy. The quantitative research approach was used to achieve the objectives. Five pairs of food packaging and an online survey were conducted to guarantee the validity and reliability of the results. The outcome retrieved from both comparison and online survey was transcribed and analyzed with the content analysis. The results could be used by companies that wish to pursue a similar path to continue analyzing sustainable packaging logistics. Due to the small sample size, the results should not be used as a shred of standard evidence. Moreover, companies should consider the given advice to achieve a similar outcome.

There is compelling epidemiologic evidence that thiopurine treatment increases the risk for a variety of tumors by mechanisms that are unclear. We investigated the in vivo mutagenicity of long-term thiopurine treatment by determining the frequency and spectra of somatic mutation events at the hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) locus in peripheral T lymphocytes as well as the prevalence of mutant clonal proliferation in a crosssectional analysis of data from 119 children and adults with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). ANOVA and regression were performed to assess relationships among the frequency and spectra of HPRT mutations with disease, duration of illness, duration of treatment, and total therapeutic dose of azathioprine and 6-MP. We observed a significant increase in the frequency of somatic mutations in 56 subjects treated with thiopurines for IBD compared with 63 subjects not treated with thiopurines. This increase was related to both total dose (P < 0.001) and duration of treatment (P < 0.001). Comparative mutation spectra analysis of 1,020 mutant isolates revealed a significant increase in the proportion of all transitions (P < 0.001), particularly G:C to A:T transitions (P < 0.001). Combined analyses of two signatures for mutant clonality, HPRT mutation, and T-cell receptor B CDR3 region unique gene sequence also showed a significant thiopurine-dependent increase in mutant cell clonal proliferation (P < 0.001). These findings provide in vivo evidence for mutation induction as a potential carcinogenic mechanism associated with chronic thiopurine intervention.
