The existence of gluten-free products of high quality and affordable price is very important for the quality of life of celiac people and the sustainability of public support. Over the last decade, the market for gluten-free products has experienced a dramatic surge, with an increasing shelf space dedicated to these products in supermarkets, and a large variety of products both in terms of kind of agricultural inputs and processing and packaging methods. This study aimed at assessing the offer of gluten-free (GF) pasta in Italian supermarkets, with respect to its ability to meet the needs of celiac people in terms of variety, prices and safety. A hedonic price analysis was performed. Results indicated that GF pasta is sold only in 44% of the 212 stores o...

Whilst changing consumer behavior can have a long-lasting positive environmental impact, choosing effective sustainable consumption policy instruments may be a challenging task. In the case of food consumption, the choice of interventions is particularly difficult because of

First a short review of the literature on channel structure and product differentiation is presented, in order to identify, on a theoretical grounding the incentives for differentiation strategies. Second, a case study is drawn of a UK channel intermediary organisation carrying out differentiation policies in the fresh produce category (on behalf of UK multiple retailer customers') supplied by a dedicated Italian grower. Results show that in the fresh produce industry there is room for product differentiation, but with contradictory welfare effects.

The paper endeavors to compare the needs of a sustainable food system with strategies actually carried out at private and public level. It is shown that while the process of trade liberalization is pushing towards market deregulation and decreasing state intervention, corporate social responsibility is very low and unable to tackle the huge environmental problems faced by the food system. The main conclusion of the paper is that the current competitive games played by leading firms are not in any way able to promote the sustainability of the new global food system and that more state intervention is requested in order to reach the goal.

The citrus farming system is affected by a long-lasting disadvantage due to structure restrictions in addition to management limits. Some studies case have confirmed that farms are frequently based on a too small crop growing area and this is one of the stronger problems in order to achieve better efficiency. The analysis of consumers’ preferences has been carried out with a two step approach based on direct telephone interviews and on a subsequent postal opinion poll. A good deal of information has been collected on style and motivation of fruit consumption pattern and on the characteristics that the citrus consumers regard as of highest significance. Consumers have clearly expressed the call for a superior information and certification service in order to protect the agreeable and healthy features of citrus fruits.

While the literature on agro-industrial districts has generally stressed the role of trust, the paper states that power can be as effective as trust in solving coordination problems stemming from contract incompleteness and opportunistic behaviours. The paper presents the results of an empirical research carried out in the Italian processed tomato industry and discusses some definitions of power given by the social network analysis.

Three experimental scenarios with different hypotheses of price ratio and product attributes of GM and NGM products were run. Consumers’ choices were related to information and risk attitude. We find that consumers tend to prefer NGM products to GM products, without any statistical relationship with their information level and risk attitude. When the NGM product is compared with an enhanced GM product, most consumers still prefer NGM product. GM product consumption does rather depend on consumers’ risk perception. The results demonstrate that there is room in the market for vertical differentiation policies ...
