VICTORIA FRÂNCU holds a PhD in Library and Information Science from the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and a bachelor degree in Literature from the University of Bucharest. She works as a librarian at the "Carol I" Central University Library in Bucharest and, as visiting lecturer, teaches at the Library and Information Science Department of the Bucharest University. Her research interests are in subject indexing, indexing languages, classification and thesauri on which she extensively published and presented at international conferences. Victoria Frâncu is a member of the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) and became a member of the Universal Decimal Classification Consortium (UDCC) Editorial Team.

The main point stated in this study is that research in the field of knowledge organization in Ro... more The main point stated in this study is that research in the field of knowledge organization in Romania over the last twenty years is unequally and unjustly distributed among different professional categories ranging from library and information science faculty members, library professionals, software tools developers and independent researchers. The special condition of library and information science functioning as a university department in Romania with an interruption of 20 years (1970-1990) affected the overall situation of scientific research in the specific fields associated with this discipline. The study has three stages: data collection, data recording and data interpretation. The primary outcomes of the scientific research activities considered are publications (books, book chapters and journal articles). Hence the main interest is directed towards analyzing to what extent research and writing for publication have an impact on the evolution of Romanian libraries over this twenty years span.

It also gives the results and comments upon the findings of a user study made at a Romanian university library. In the end a few suggestions for improving the library services are made and they address mainly the library OPAC design.

The article describes the research done over a bibliographic database in order to show the impact... more The article describes the research done over a bibliographic database in order to show the impact the specificity of the knowledge organising tools may have on information retrieval (IR). For this purpose two multilingual Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) based thesauri having different degrees of specificity are considered. Issues of harmonising a classificatory structure with a thesaurus structure are introduced, and significant aspects of information retrieval in a multilingual environment are examined in an extensive manner. Aspects of complementarity are discussed with particular emphasis on the real impact produced on IR by alternative search facilities. Finally, a number of conclusions are formulated as they arise from the study.
