The objects1 have come to the Institute from the reserves of the Archaeological Museum of Florence through the efforts of the Etruscan Foundation, with headquarters in Detroit, an organization devoted to the study of the Etruscan civilization. The Etruscan Foundation was founded in 1959 under the leadership of F. Hartz Cinelli and has undertaken as its major activity a series of excavations at Vetulonia, one of the principal Etruscan sites which has not been sufficiently investigated as yet. The Etruscan Foundation has recently concluded its third season of digging under the direction of Dr. Anna Talocchini, the supervisor furnished by the Superintendent of Antiquities in Florence. Works are presented in related groups, as they appear in the museum's galleries. Written by the DIA curatorial staff, brief, accessible descriptions provide insight on the subject matter, symbolism, context, and cultural meaning of each object, helping readers and museum visitors to discover new ways of comprehending art and the world. Unlike other museum books which simply catalog and analyze individual works, The Detroit Institute of Arts emphasizes the universality of visual language and its ability to assist viewers in communicating with people from diverse cultures and from distant times and places. The Detroit Institute of Arts also features a time line of the museum's history and the development of its collection, a glossary, answers to frequently asked questions, and an index. Special connections to Detroit's artists and collectors are noted throughout the book.

This book investigates how people dressed, what they ate, the houses they built, the games they played, and the tools they used, among many other aspects of daily life, paying great attention to the change and development of each area within the conservative Egyptian society. More than any other ancient civilization, the ancient Egyptians have left us with a wealth of evidence about their daily lives in the form of perishable objects, from leather sandals to feather fans, detailed depictions of trades and crafts on the walls of tombs, and a wide range of documentary evidence from temple inventories to personal laundry lists. Drawing on these diverse sources and richly illustrating his account with nearly one hundred images, William H. Peck illuminates the culture of the a...
