Fracture of the temporal bone is mainly classified according to the orientation of the fracture plane and whether there is involvement of the otic capsule. Despite its frequent occurrence, there is limited research on the frequency and pattern of temporal bone fractures in our setup. Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional hospital - based study of 60 patients who underwent computed tomography of the head for head trauma at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital during the study period from October 2020 - October 2022. Results: Among the 60 patients enrolled in the study, the mean age of presentation was 31.1 years with a male-to-female ratio of 4:1. There were 69 temporal bone fractures, 9(15%) were bilateral and 51(85%) unilateral The longitudinal fracture pattern was the most common fracture pattern, occurring in 40(78.4%) of unilateral cases, 15(83.3%) of bilateral cases. Otic capsule sparing fractures accounted for 49(96.07%) of unilateral fracture cases, and all patients with bilateral involvement had an otic capsule sparing fracture. Among the 42 patients for whom data regarding post-traumatic hearing outcome was available, 4 patients had post-traumatic hearing impairment. Anatomically, the squamous portion of the temporal bone was involved in 30(43.5%) of cases. Conclusions: Fractures affecting the squamous portion of the temporal bone, longitudinal fracture patterns, and otic capsule sparing were the most frequent forms. The majority of temporal bone fractures were associated with other bone fractures and intracranial injuries.

Collaboration enables individuals to work together to achieve defined and common health purposes. There is limited evidence related to nurse-physician inter-professional collaboration and its associated factors in Ethiopia, particularly in Dessie city public hospitals. Objective: To assess nurse-physician inter-professional collaboration and associated factors at public hospitals in Dessie city, Ethiopia, 2021. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among nurses and physicians at public hospitals in Dessie city. A self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Stratified simple random sampling techniques were used to select study participants proportional to the sample size allocation. The final sample size was 260 and allocated proportionally to Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and Boru Meda General Hospital. The data were entered and analyzed using EPI-data version 4.6 and SPSS version 26 software respectively. During analysis, p-values less than 0.25 in binary logistic regression were entered into multivariable logistic regression. Finally, p-values less than 0.05 in multi-variable logistic regression were considered statically significant. Results: The mean score for inter-professional collaboration was 97.40 ± 19.6SD. In this study, inter-professional collaboration among nurses and physicians was 44.2%. This study showed that favorable attitude [AOR=3.205; CI: 1.781-5.766], respondents working in the gynecological department [AOR=0.210; CI: 0.052-0.849], satisfied organizational support [AOR=2.062; CI: 1.140-3.729] and urban residents [AOR=3.996; CI: 1.069-14.931] were factors associated with nurse-physician inter-professional collaboration. Conclusion: In this study, nurse-physician inter-professional collaboration was low. Training on the importance of health teamwork, timely monitoring and evaluation of organizational support, and professional empowerment towards a favorable attitude of nursephysician inter-professional collaboration shall be provided at hospital levels. Routine assessment and timely intervention of the gynecological department for nurse-physician inter-professional collaboration shall be done at hospital levels. Moreover, both quantitative and qualitative research shall be performed for future research.

Research paper thumbnail of Undernutrition and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in East Belesa District, northwest Ethiopia: a community based cross-sectional study

However, there is a scarcity of information on the magnitude and determinant factors of undernutrition. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of undernutrition and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in East Belesa District, northwest Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May, 2014. A multistage stratified sampling technique was used to select 633 study participants. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. In order to identify factors associated with undernutrition (stunting and wasting) a multivariate logistic regression analysis was employed. The Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95 % Confidence Interval (CI) was computed to show the strength of the association. In the multivariate analysis, variables with a p-value of <0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results: In this study, about 57.7 and 16 % of the children were stunted and wasted, respectively. The odds of stunting were higher in children born to mothers who gave their first birth before 15 years of age (AOR = 2.4; 95 % CI: 1.19, 5.09) and gave prelacteal feeding to their child (AOR = 1.83; 95 % CI: 1.28, 2.61). However, lower odds of stunting were observed among children aged 36-47 months (AOR = 0.41; 95 % CI: 0.22, 0.78) and had higher family monthly income, Et. Br. 750-1000, (AOR = 0.61; 95 % CI: 0.39, 0.92). Moreover, the odds of wasting were higher among children who received butter as prelacteal food (AOR = 2.32; 95 % CI:1.82, 5.31). Conclusion: Child undernutrition is a critical public health problem in the study area. Advanced age of children (36-47 months) and higher family monthly income were inversely associated with stunting. However, higher odds of stunting were observed among children whose mothers delivered their first child before 15 years of age, and gave their children prelacteal feeding. Thus, delaying the first pregnancy and reducing prelacteal feeding is of a paramount significance in reducing the burden of undernutrition.

Because refraction services are scarce and difficult to obtain, many people with refractive error live with impaired vision or blindness for the rest of their lives. Objective The primary goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of refractive errors and associated factors among patients who visited Boru Meda Hospital. Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from April to June 2018, all patients who visited Boru Meda Hospital's secondary eye unit were deemed our source population; the sample frame was the secondary eye unit outpatient departments register. To select samples, simple random sampling was used. Data was entered by using Epi-data version 3 and analysed with Statistical Package for Social Science 20. Tables and graphs were used to display descriptive statistics, and logistic regression was used to examine the rel...

Research paper thumbnail of Undernutrition and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in East Belesa District, northwest Ethiopia: a community based cross-sectional study

BMC Public Health, 2016
