Transmission of Campylobacter to humans mainly occurs by handling and consuming contaminated food; other potential sources of infection include drinking untreated water or direct contact with animals. In a recent opinion, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) BIOHAZ panel demonstrated that handling and consumption of poultry meat likely accounts for 20% to 30% of these cases and the poultry reservoir as a whole, including contamination via direct or environmental contacts, likely contributes up to 80% of the disease burden (EFSA, 2011).
