This research aimed to study the effect of using Hong Kong caterpillars in the quail diet on egg quality. A total of 200 quail aged 8-14 weeks, weighing 110 ± 10 g, were used in the study, with 40% production. This study used a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications. The laying quail diets were formulated with varying levels of HC, including 0% HC for group A, 3% HC for B, 6% HC for C, 9% HC for D, and 12% HC for E. The egg quality parameters measured were egg yolk fat, egg yolk cholesterol, egg white protein, and eggshell thickness. The results indicated that including 12% HC in the quail diet significantly reduced egg yolk cholesterol and egg yolk fat. However, eggshell thickness and egg white protein remained unaffected. Consequently, it can be concluded that Hong Kong caterpillars can be used in quail diets up to a maximum of 12% to reduce egg yolk cholesterol and...

The main feed for ruminants is forage, and its supply fluctuates greatly depending on the season.... more The main feed for ruminants is forage, and its supply fluctuates greatly depending on the season. During the rainy season, the forage will thrive and be abundant, but the opposite condition, i.e. dry season, where farmers will have difficulty getting fresh forage. Meanwhile, animal feed must be continuously available. The solution is to use agricultural waste as an animal feed with limiting factors, namely high lignin content, low digestibility, low protein content, and anti-nutrients. Therefore, a feed processing technology known as Ammoniation is needed. Ammoniation is a chemical treatment of agricultural and plantation waste feed ingredients by adding chemicals like NaOH, KOH, or Urea. Ammoniation can reduce lignin and silica and increase protein content. Socializing ammoniation technology in the Ambacang Permai livestock farmer group, Lima Puluh Kota District, was necessary. The method included lectures, demonstrations of making rice straw ammoniation, discussions, and consultat...

This research aims to study the effect of the Tenebrio molitor caterpillar in concentrate and tofu dregs growth media on nutrient content and determine the Tmc effect in the diet on the production of laying quail. The study was divided into two stages of research. Phase 1 of the laboratory experiment determined the composition of the concentrate and tofu dregs media on the nutrient content of Tenebrio molitor. This study method was a completely randomized design (CRD) with six treatments and three replications. The treatment variations consist of commercial ration (CR) and tofu dregs (TD) were treatment P1 (100% CR), P2 (80% CR + 20% TD), P3 (60% CR+ 40% TD), P4 (40% CR + 20% TD), P5 (20% CR + 80% TD) and P6 (100% TD). The observed variables were fresh weight, crude protein, and crude fat of Tmc. The Phase 2 application to laying quails is the utilization of Tenebrio molitor caterpillars in the diet. This stage used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments and four replications. Provision of Tenebrio molitor caterpillars consisted of 0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12% in the diet of laying quail. The parameters measured were feed consumption, daily egg production, egg weight, egg mass, and feed conversion. Phase 1 showed that the difference in growth media composition had a significant effect (P<0.01) on fresh weight, crude protein, and crude fat. The Phase 2 variance analysis results showed that the use of Tmc in the diet had no significant effect (P> 0.05) on feed consumption, egg production, egg weight, egg mass, and feed conversion. The study concluded at stage 1 that 100% tofu dregs medium was the best treatment to improve the nutrient content of the Tenebrio molitor caterpillar. Stage 2 concluded that the Tenebrio molitor caterpillar could be used up to 12% in laying quail rations (substituted 100% fish meal) and maintain the same egg production as control.

Leguminosa is a type of tree and shrub-shaped plant that contains higher protein than ordinary grass. Indigofera legumes have several advantages including high productivity, adaptability to low soil fertility, easy and inexpensive maintenance. This activity aims to transfer knowledge to farmers regarding the potential development of Indigofera legumes as quality animal feed and provide Indigofera legume seeds to be developed by members of farmer-livestock groups. This activity is a Community Service which was carried out at the Ambacang Permai livestock farmer group, Nagari Batu Payung, Lareh Sago Halaban District, Lima Puluh Kota Regency. The method used in this activity is counseling and socializing the potential of Indigofera legumes, as well as question and answer discussions regarding the development and how to plant Indigofera legumes. The results of this activity have provided additional knowledge for farmers in...

Protein is typically determined by measuring nitrogen component and multiplied the value by 6.25. Utilization of feed protein by livestock can be determined if the amount of nitrogen bound in the cell wall is analyzed. This study was aimed to analyze cell wall nitrogen or insoluble nitrogen fractions present in soybean and redbean as influenced due to different drying temperatures. Soybean and redbean were oven-dried at different levels of temperatures for 24 h, i.e. 50, 60, 70 and 80 C in three replicates. This research used a factorial completely randomized design (2x4). Results showed that soybean contained higher protein than that of redbean. Increasing drying temperatures increased NDICP and ADICP of both soybean and redbean, probably due to the formation of maillard compounds. Higher levels of such insoluble nitrogen fractions are not desirable due to their lower utilization efficiency in the digestive tract of animals. It c...

Soybean and redbean were dried in an oven set at four different drying temperatures, i.e. 50, 60, 70 and 80 oC for 24 h in three replicates. Dried samples were then milled and used further for chemical composition determination (proximate analysis, Van Soest analysis and protein fraction) and in vitro rumen fermentation assay. Parameters measured in the in vitro assay were gas production, digestibility, pH, ammonia and volatile fatty acids (VFA). Data obtained were analyzed by using analysis of variance and a posthoc test namely Duncan’s multiple range test. Results revealed that neutral detergent insoluble crude protein (NDICP) content increased at higher drying temperature (70 or 80 oC) for both soybean and redbean (P<0.05) but at different magnitude. As with NDICP, higher temperature led to a...
