This paper presents millimeter wave phased array antenna for short range communication applicatio... more This paper presents millimeter wave phased array antenna for short range communication applications at 35 GHz. The antenna array is formed by 1 × 16 microstrip antipodal tapered slot antennas each connected to RF MEMS phase shifters for beam steering. The simulation and measurement results of the single antenna element are presented and the phase shifter structure to be used in the array is described in the paper. RF MEMS phase shifters are fabricated using an in-house surface micromachining process.

A novel method is presented for electrically tuning the frequency of a compact RFID tag antenna. ... more A novel method is presented for electrically tuning the frequency of a compact RFID tag antenna. A tuning circuit, comprising an RF switch and discrete passive components, has been completely integrated into the antenna element, which is thus free of dc wires. The low-profile printed antennas are fabricated together with the layouts of its DC control circuits and other RF/base-band circuit footprints. A surface mounted (SMT) varactor is applied as a frequency-tuning element at proper places of the meandered slots in compact antenna. Prototype designs show the in-band frequency (return loss is <10 dB) is tunable from 2.4 GHz to 2.8 GHz when the bias voltage varies from 4V to 7 V. The impact of the tuning circuit on the antenna's return loss and radiation pattern have been experimentally studied through comparison with the performance of a reference antenna not incorporating the tuning circuit. The proposed frequency tuning concept can be extended to more complex compact structures as well as other types of antennas to give enhanced electrical performance.

The array element is designed by using infinite array simulations to approximate the mutual coupling effects to obtain good input match for various beam steering angles in the final array. A circular rim with ground plane is added to the final array to suppress grating lobes appear when the beam is steered. It is shown by simulations that grating lobe is suppressed to a level less than -20 dB at 35 GHz.

They are indispensable multiple port components that are used for combination and separation of specific signals or frequency bandwidths selectively from a single signal or frequency bandwidth in multiport communication system. The main blocks that form a multiplexer are a set of filters, named as channel filters, and junctions connecting to filters to the common port. In satellite-communication systems, waveguide filter structures are mostly preferred and employed as channel filter in multiplexer configuration due to the fact that they are of low insertion loss, high power handling capability and high quality factor.
