While SMEs play a critical role in generating employment and supporting trade, they face numerous challenges, the prominent among them are the need to respond to fasting time-to-market, low-cost and rapid solutions to complex organizational problems. Towards that end, research and development (R & D) aspect deserves particular attention to promote and facilitate the operations of SMEs. Virtual R & D team could be a viable option. However, literature shows that virtual R & D teaming in SMEs is still at its infancy. This article provides a comprehensive literature review on different aspects of virtual R & D teams collected from the reputed publications. The purpose of the state-of-the-art literature review is to provide an overview on the structure and dynamics of R & D collaboration in SMEs. Specifying the foundation and importance of virtual teams, the relationship between virtual R & D team and SMEs has been examined. It concludes with the identification of the gaps in the existing literatures and calls for future research. It is argued that setting-up an infrastructure for virtual R & D team in SMEs still requires a large amount of engineering efforts and deserves consideration at top level management.

Fuzzy Logic is used to control the navigation of the robot towards the goal while avoiding obstacles along the way by changing its direction of movement. The positions of the mobile robot, obstacle and the destination are taken into consideration and an overhead camera (above the robot's environment) is used to gather these necessary information. The images captured are processed using different techniques to get the desired positions and is directly integrated with the fuzzy controller making the algorithm more efficient compared to other vision-guided navigation techniques.

Research paper thumbnail of Insert geometry effects on surface roughness in turning process of AISI D2 steel

Journal of Zhejiang University Science, 2010

Surface roughness is an important parameter for ensuring that the dimension of geometry is within... more Surface roughness is an important parameter for ensuring that the dimension of geometry is within the permitted tolerance. The ideal surface roughness is determined by the feed rate and the geometry of the tool. However, several uncontrollable factors including work material factors, tool angle, and machine tool vibration, may also influence surface roughness. The objective of this study was to compare the measured surface roughness (from experiment) to the theoretical surface roughness (from theoretical calculation) and to investigate the surface roughness resulting from two types of insert, ‘C’ type and ‘T’ type. The experiment was focused on the turning process, using a lathe machine Colchester 6000. The feed rate was varied within the recommended feed rate range. We found that there were large deviations between the measured and theoretical surface roughness at a low feed rate (0.05 mm/r) from the application of both inserts. A work material factor of AISI D2 steel that affects the chip character is presumably responsible for this phenomenon. Interestingly, at a high feed rate (0.4 mm/r), the ‘C’ type insert resulted in 40% lower roughness compared to the ‘T’ type due to the difference in insert geometry. This study shows that the geometry of an insert may result in a different surface quality at a particular level of feed rate.

The combustion of natural gas produces mainly water and CO2 and significantly less CO and UHC emissions. In many cases, CNG vehicles generate fewer exhaust and greenhouse gas emissions than their gasoline or diesel-powered counterparts. While it is clean burning and in plentiful supply with a reasonably even global distribution, its drawback is that it is less energy dense than petrol and so has required either a large tank or a reduced driving range Using it in conjunction with electric drive as in an electric hybrid vehicle, this disadvantage would be significantly reduced. In this paper we present results of the first stage of our research that is conversion of a gasoline vehicle to run on direct injected compressed natural gas. We also present a proposed scheme for a CNGDI-electric hybrid vehicle.

This paper describes an investigation of the memory span of Malaysian population for virtual environment design. Experiments were conducted where number, letters, word, and object or pictures were presented to test subjects. Nineteen University students, (6 males and 13 females) participated in the experiment. Their age is range from 17 to 30 years old. Subjects were asked to observe a group of numbers and letters for ten seconds as well as words for sixty seconds and objects or pictures for thirty second and to write down all the numbers, letters, words and pictures that they have seen during thirty seconds. The two tailed t test is conducted to test the difference of memory span between the male and female population. The result shows that there is no different between the capacity of visual short term memory Malaysian of the male and female population. The memory span was found to be in the range of 6 and 9 digits for numbers, 5 and 10 alphabets for letters, 5 and 11 strings for words, and 6 and 11 items for objects or pictures.

Global and localized virtual R&D teams are believed to have a high potential for SMEs growth. Due to the fast growing complexity of the new product, coupled with new emerging opportunities of virtual teams, a collaborative approach is believed to be the future trend. This research explores the effectiveness of virtuality in SMEs virtual R&D teams. An online questionnaire emailed to Malaysian manufacturing SMEs and 74 usable questionnaires were received, representing a 20.8 percent return rate. To avoid the bias that may result from pre-suggested answer, a series of open-ended questions asked from expertise. This study based on analyzing an open-ended question; extract four main themes among expertise recommendations on the effectiveness of virtual teams for SMEs growth and performance. These are suitable for SMEs new product design manager to realize the key advantage and importance of virtual R&D teams in the process of NPD, which lead to increase the effectiveness of the new product's procedure.
