Ajami claims that it was now the United States' moment in Iraq and its driving motivation should be 'modernising the Arab world'. He refers to the occupation as a legitimate 'imperial mission', a foreigner's gift to the Iraqi inhabitants. (p. 366). In Dangerous Gifts, Ozavci tells us how foreign power involvement in the Middle East in the 20th century is no different than that of the 19th century, when the self-defined Great Powers (Austria-Hungary, Britain, France, Prussia, and Russia) had assumed responsibility, either individually or collectively, for supplying security in the region even when the sovereign authority was opposed to their intervention.

Amit Bein sets out to prove that on the contrary the new Republic was very much involved in Middle East politics and in the reshaping of the post-Ottoman borders. Using primary sources, including archives and newspapers in Turkish, Arabic, English and other languages, with maps and photographs, Bein gives the readers an almost day-today account of the Turkish foreign policy between two wars. However, the book is not only about post-Ottoman Turkey and its efforts to survive, to gain respect and independence, but it is also about the policies of the colonial powers and how deeply they were always involved in the Middle East even after WWII, and the fate of the minorities-the Kurds, the Armenians and the Assyrians.

Many of them were white Americans, although an increasing number of them also had ties to the Middle East or South Asia. Western expats frequently lived together in compound villas, luxury apartments or hotels, socializing predominantly among themselves. Vora calls such gated communities ‘expat/ expert camps’, thus comparing them to the segregated accommodations of poorer labourers. With few Qatari friends outside of work, some American faculty members then also held onto stereotypical views of locals as conservative and backward. In her own memoir, Hello American Lady Creature, Lisa Kirchner, a founding administrator of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, also expressed the widespread view that Muslim women were oppressed and in need of liberation. Despite being demographically diverse, American branch campuses—like their home campuses in the US—were thus also sites of racism and sexism. Teach for Arabia is rich in documenting the experiences of various members of the Education City community. Students, instructors and administrative staff all get to speak in lengthy quotations throughout the book. The author displays great skill in connecting with her interlocutors and gaining their trust. My only concern is that their voices appear as monolingual as most of the textbooks in use. Although Vora’s work is about transnational higher education, its bibliography and notes refer almost exclusively to material in English. She mentions debates about Qatar’s development in Arabic newspapers, but hardly cites any examples. The reader also learns little about the thoughts of Nepalior Tagalog-speaking workers, who were among the least-privileged people in the college buildings. Despite the lack of sources in Middle Eastern and Asian languages, Teach for Arabia is still an excellent example of ethnography. I especially applaud Vora’s deep reflections of her own position and access as a researcher and educator. Having worked in Education City myself for over eight years, her statements ring true to me. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anybody interested in the politics and society of modern Qatar. Students of the wider Arabian Peninsula who seek to move beyond the topics of oil and Islam will find the text equally useful. Finally, the book will also be of great value to scholars of higher education globally. Diversity and hierarchies in Doha might look different to where you are based. Yet, many of the broader issues, such as nativism, elitism, (post-)colonialism and white supremacy, are also highly relevant elsewhere.

In this issue, we turn to His Excellency Mr. Umit Yalcin, the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to discuss Anglo-Turkish diplomatic relations over history from the Turkish perspective. William Harborne, in 1583, was sent as an Ambassador to the court of Murad the Third. Yusuf Agah Effendi, who was one of the first Ambassadors of the Ottoman Empire, started to serve during the reign of George the Third in 1793. It starts with Spencer Robinson (1838-1889), who was a tenant farmer from East Keal in Lincolnshire. He migrated to India to become a tea farmer and also worked on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. After the death of his first wife, in 1880 he married Hannah Rodda (1854-1948), who was raised in the slums of London's East End. Their son Ahmet (Peel Harold) Robinson (1889-1965) or Ahmet 'Robenson' was born in Bengal, lived in the Ottoman Empire and died in New York. He was one of the first goalkeepers for the Galatasaray football team, and he is also known as the person who introduced scouting and basketball to the Ottoman Empire. The German connection of the story is through Gertrude Eisenman, an 'illegitimate 'daughter of Hannah before she met Spencer. Later Gertrude became a cult figure in Germany as a racing motorcyclist and a car rally driver in late Wilhelmine Germany.
