Steve Smith (original) (raw)
Steve Smith is the current captain of Australia. Smith was initially selected as a bowler but eventually, his batting prowess came through and he was selected in the Australian team as an all rounder. By the time he was made captain of the Australian Test side, Smith was recognised as one of the best batsmen of his generation and nothing more than an occassional bowler. While being comfortable driving and pulling the fast bowlers, Smith is quick-footed and adept at facing spin too making him as lethal in the subcontinent as he is anywhere else. In 2014-15, he scored centuries in all four of first innings against India. He was only 25 when he got was made captain, due to the unavailability of the injured Michael Clarke and Australia's performance under him and his own unfettered stacking up of runs despite the added responsibility, he was viewed as the natural successor to Clarke. It was confirmed by Clarke's retirement in 2015. While known for his tenacious demeanour on the crease in Tests, he can also switch to a truly destructive style in T20s and ODIs. He was Australia's highest run-getter in the 2015 World Cup.
