As heavy rain continued to lash Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, schools in multiple areas of the region have been shut. Puducherry Education Minister Namachivayam announced the closure of all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal on Friday. Similarly, Madurai District Collector M C Sangeetha has declared a holiday for all schools in the district on Friday, citing the persistent downpour.

What is the current forecast? According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall is likely to continue in several areas of Tamil Nadu, including Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Kanyakumari. In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy with light rain in some areas.
The IMD has issued yellow alerts for several districts in Tamil Nadu, signalling moderate to heavy rainfall in the region. The weather agency has forecasted that the rains will continue until December 16. ‘Yellow’ alert has been issued for parts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Kanyakumari districts of Tamilnadu due to the ongoing rain predictions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for four districts in Kerala—Kollam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur—on Thursday, signaling the possibility of very heavy rainfall (ranging from 6 cm to 20 cm). Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for eight other districts, indicating heavy rainfall of 6 to 11 cm.
The IMD forecasted light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in various parts of the state over the next five days, with the possibility of very heavy rainfall on Thursday itself. (PTI input)

An orange alert has been issued for parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe, while a yellow alert has been issued for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and South Interior Karnataka amid rain predictions.
The minimum and maximum temperatures for Chennai are expected to be 24.68 degree Celsius and 27.61 degree Celsius, respectively, and the humidity in the city stood at 80 per cent.
The IMD has also issued a heavy rainfall warning in Puducherry and Karaikal for December 14, 16 and 17. A moderate to heavy rainfall alert has also been issued for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The government of Tamil Nadu has ordered schools to be shut in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and other cities on Thursday owing to a heavy rainfall warning put out by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
IMD has predicted that moderate to heavy rainfall will continue across multiple districts of Tamil Nadu for the next 24 hours. Owing to the heavy rainfall, schools have been closed in 11 cities — Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Thiruvarur, Ranipet and Tiruvallur.
IMD in its forecast issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts in Tamil Nadu, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall today. In its alert, the weather agency said that the rains in Tamil Nadu may continue till December 16.
