West Bengal Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Schedule, phase, seats, candidates and all you need to know about West Bengal General Elections (original) (raw)

West Bengal Lok Sabha Elections 2024: After witnessing a drop in voter turnout in phase 2 from phase 1 in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, West Bengal registered its highest voter turnout in phase 6 on Saturday, May 25. Phase 6 registered 80.05 per cent, which was a lot higher than phase 5‘s percentage of 78.45 per cent voter turnout. West Bengal’s voter turnout in phase 6 was also significantly higher than the national average of 61.85 per cent. After six phases, West Bengal stands as one of the best states in voter turn, with 79.23 per cent. The remaining nine seats of the states will go for polling next in phase 7 on Saturday, June 1, as per their official schedule from ECI.

One of the most important states during the Lok Sabha Elections, West Bengal, has always been home to the hardcore politics as the eastern state of India is one of those states who prefers to pick the candidates of their local parties, over those of the national parties.

However, despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC (Trinamool Congress), was able to finish as the biggest party in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections with 18 seats under their belt, they saw a dramatic drop of 12 seats from 2014 elections, while the ruling party in the centre, BJP made a dramatic jump to 18 seats in 2019, in comparison to just two in 2014.

The Lok Sabha Elections of West Bengal, will once again be talk of the town as the current scenarios of alliance and opposition is taking a new turn at regular intervals, as despite being part of I.N.D.I.A bloc, the ruling state party of TMC have decided to fight the elections alone, while contesting on all the 42 seats.

Candidates list of 2024 Elections

After the complete domination of the BJP-led NDA alliance in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, INC, TMC, RJD, SP and many other parties, decided to come under one banner of I.N.D.I.A bloc. However, despite being a part of the newly formed alliance, Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, has decided to contest the General Elections of 2024 alone, while contesting on all the 42 seats, making the West Bengal General Election of 2024, a three-way tussle between, NDA, I.N.D.I.A and TMC.
