Won Jo  Cheong

I am interested in development of advanced chromatographic stationary phases and columns. In our laboratory, we have achieved excellent separation efficiency for HPLC and CEC columns. The number of theoretical plates of 1.7 million has been achieved with a 1.2 m open tubular capillary column in the CEC mode. When the same column was operated in the LC mode, the separation efficiency was over 200,000 plates. In addition, the columns packed with modified silica monolith particles have shown the column separation efficiency as high as 50,000 plates per column.

We have prepared microcolumns made of stainless steel tubing, glass-lined stainless steel tubing,... more We have prepared microcolumns made of stainless steel tubing, glass-lined stainless steel tubing, and silica-lined stainless steel tubing and examined their performances comparatively. The length of columns was fixed as 30 cm, and the I.D.'s, either 1 mm or 0.5 mm. Octadecyl bonded silica paticles were used as the stationary phases. p-Nitroaniline, N,N-dimethyl-o-nitro-p-toluidine,and ethylbenzene were used as the test solutes. The glass-lined or silica-lined stainless steel columns showed better performances than the plain stainless steel column did. The number of theoretical plates over 10,000 were obtained even for the 0.5 mm I.D.
