On the basis of four existing manuscripts, a Byzantine “spiritually beneficial tale” is published... more On the basis of four existing manuscripts, a Byzantine “spiritually beneficial tale” is published for the first time. This is an obvious translation from Greek but its original is nowhere attested. The action takes place in Jerusalem and its surroundings, the actors are pre-Islamic Arabs. In all probability, the story was written down at the beginning of the 6th century; the hidden message of the legend is the questionability of “barbaric” conversions as such.

Dagron knew everything about Byzantium, but for the 16th century, Pierre de Giles also knew everything about it, as did Charles du Cange for the 17th century, Charles Diehl for the early 20th century, or Paul Lemerle, Dagron's mentor, for the middle of the last century. Continuity of tradition is as important as it is irreplaceable. Dagron was the champion of Paris in fencing. When he arrived in Moscow as the French Embassy's cultural attaché (1962-1964), he managed to obtain permission to attend a local fencing club (oh, this was a serious victory, he used to recall with a chuckle). In all other respects, Dagron tried to live an active life in the Soviet Union: he made friends among the liberal intelligentsia, whose cause was still important to him 45 years later (cf. his article "Pour l'honneur de M me Z. À propos de Sartre et de la Russie," Commentaire 113 (2006), pp. 173-176). He also travelled around the Soviet Union, which was unusual for a diplomat in those days. During one such trip, his car was crushed by a truck, and he always insisted that there was no more to it than just an accident. He maintained

At least three fragments places in Nikephoros Kallistos Xanthopoulos? narrative of the Avar wars ... more At least three fragments places in Nikephoros Kallistos Xanthopoulos? narrative of the Avar wars have no parallels either in Theophylakt Simokatta or in Theophanes. The nature of the evidence cited in these passages cannot be a logical reconstruction based on the texts of either of the mentioned authors. This means that Xanthopoulos, the Church historian of the 14th century, had at his disposal a source on the 6th century which has not come down to us.

By and large, it coincides with the chapters II.28 through III.8 of the “Patria Constantinoupoleos,” as edited by Th. Preger. Yet, it rephrases and, in many places, augments this edition considerably.

This is the first publication of a tale about a journey to the other world from two seventeenth-c... more This is the first publication of a tale about a journey to the other world from two seventeenth-century manuscripts kept in St.Petersburg. In the IS80s, the soul of a poor miner Nicholas from the Macedonian village of Izvor was mistakenly and prematurely snatched from his body by an angel who accompanied him through the heavens. After Nicholas' return to life, he described his adventures, which, although reminiscent of the famous Byzantine visions of the afterlife, still diverge from them in some important details. The tale not only helps to recreate the social life of the mining area of Siderokausia, but also portrays the infighting among the local Orthodox Christian clergy.

The book contains the publication and an extended analysis of the oldest Slavonic translation of ... more The book contains the publication and an extended analysis of the oldest Slavonic translation of the Life of Basil the Younger,presumably carried out in Rus’ at the end of the 11thcentury. The translation in question, the Egorov Manuscript from the Russian State Library, is the earliest extant version which was not part of the Great Menaia collection compiled by the Metropolitan Makarij. The Greek original, drawn from a previously unexplored and underestimated Byzantine manuscript copied in 1328 and kept in the Athos Dionysiou Monastery, is published “en regard” to the Slavonic text. This version is closest to the Slavonic text and much closer to the 10th century Byzantine protograph than the Moscow manuscript published in 2014. The research part of the book defines the place of the published Slavonic text among other Old Russian translations of the Pre-Mongol period. Also described are the peculiarities of the original Byzantine text from which both the Slavonic Egorov version and the Greek Dionysiou version derive. The edition is aimed at philologists specializing in Old Rus’ studies, Paleoslavists, Byzantinists,cultural historians, art historians and those with a general interest in the culture of Old Rus’.

Not a single contemporary Byzantine source mentions the Christianization of Ethiopia in the fifth... more Not a single contemporary Byzantine source mentions the Christianization of Ethiopia in the fifth century, the Byzantine attempts to convert Persia at the end of the sixth, the creation of the Slavic alphabet in the ninth, or the baptism of Rus’ in the tenth. These great achievements of Eastern Christianity left the Byzantines themselves perfectly indifferent. Byzantium produced a number of ardent and committed missionaries, but much more visible were the Greek intellectuals who believed that it was easier “to whitewash an Ethiopian” than to Christianize a barbarian. When Leo V acquainted the pagan Bulgars with the Christian sacraments, Theophanes Continuatus castigated him for “casting the pearls of faith before the swine.” In the end, the missionary zeal of a few enthusiasts lost out to the haughty isolationism of Empire. “Pearls before Swine” focuses on the complex relationship between the Christian pledge to “teach all nations” and Greek cultural snobbery.
