This song collection, Songs from the Heart, is a thank offering of worship songs that arises from the very core of the composer’s being. May these modern hymns encourage Chinese churches the world over to believe the gospel, experience revival, proclaim the precious message of the Bible, and through the power of the Holy Spirit carry out the Great Commission, “that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve” (Daniel 7:14) our redeemer Jesus Christ, the world’s one and only hope.

One of the notorious interpretive cruces within the Synoptic Gospels concerns blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. According to Jesus, this sin stands apart from and above all others as an unforgivable offense. Attempts to explain the internal logic of these sayings and their place within Jesus's teaching have left New Testament scholarship at an impasse. The present study advances a fresh perspective: that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit means radically rejecting the sign of the New Covenant, hence the offender experiences the covenant sanction of irrevocably being "cut off."

In this insightful interview, Scott Callaham highlights key challenges issued in World Mission: Theology, Strategy, and Current Issues. The book was written not only for mission practitioners, mission agencies, and seminaries, but for all biblically- and theologically-engaged Christians. Covering themes not seen in contemporary books on mission, the contributors to the book are not merely advocating returning to the Bible as a guide for the theology and practice of mission (although these aspects of mission clearly need to be reformed) but are aiming for a complete rethinking of world mission that takes us back to the source—the Bible.

Even so, language is by no means merely a structure for encoding, transmitting, and decoding information, and music is much more than a framework for the inscribing, performing , and hearing of sound and rhythm. Through acts of seemingly unbounded artistic creativity, language and music separately stimulate flights of human imagination as few other influences can. Then when combined together in song, language and music uniquely plumb the depths of the soul. It is little wonder that Scripture repeatedly urges God's people to "Sing to the LORD a new song" (Ps 96:1-2, 98:1, 149:1; Isa 42:10). This study examines songwriting from a fresh perspective, that of writing songs in the composer’s second language (in this case, Chinese) without reference to a pre-existing first language edition.

While a few recent textbooks have departed from this well-travelled path by advancing more inductive and communicative approaches to language acquisition, both these newer instructional practices and the familiar older ones assume a specifically Euro-American cultural and linguistic instructional milieu. The present study examines the teaching of Biblical Hebrew in Chinese through the lens of language defamiliarization, not only highlighting linguistic and cultural factors that differ markedly from those of Western teaching traditions, but also drawing out principles of Biblical Hebrew instruction that are applicable to all teaching contexts.

Biblical and systematic theology stand in tension as fields of study that are constructively rela... more Biblical and systematic theology stand in tension as fields of study that are constructively related in theory but strictly segregated in practice. In the first place, the nature of biblical theology seems to mandate that the concerns of systematic theology exert no conscious influence upon the work of biblical theologians. Furthermore, as a rule, biblical theologies—especially those firmly grounded in the OT—only tangentially influence the work of systematicians. Thus endures a stubborn, seemingly intractable impasse in academic theology. Those who nonetheless seek a voice for biblical theology in the broader world of Christian theological reflection have an unlikely ally in Paul van Imschoot, a nearly forgotten pre-Vatican II Catholic biblical theologian. Van Imschoot's productive labors transgress received assumptions on the relationship between biblical and systematic theology and beckon present theologians to return to the grounding of Scripture for the formation of doctrine.

Perhaps inspired by the literary artistry of the author of Ruth, some recent interpreters have also averred that an erotic undercurrent flows through words they deem intertextually suggestive and allusively ambiguous in Ruth 1:14 as the text reads, 'but Ruth clung to her'. The present study critically examines this proposal in light of interrelated semantic, syntactic, and intertextual literary evidence.

Then the recipient of the action (the patient) instead takes center stage, and the agent drops out of explicit representation. In a minority of cases, however, verbal clauses rehabilitate the demoted agent via a prepositional agent phrase.

Strangely, in a handful of these instances the formerly-demoted agent promotes to the syntactically-prominent preverbal slot. Hitherto untreated in grammatical literature as a distinct syntactical problem, the enigma of demoted agent promotion calls for special investigation. The present study reviews the concept of passive voice, examines the function of passive voice expressions, and highlights texts that both demote and promote the agent of the passive verb. Having established its theoretical framework and delimited its textual data set, the study breaks new ground by explaining the function of paradoxical promotion of the demoted agent.
