My research uses an ethnographic approach to explore how learner identities are negotiated by 8 young people originally from Somalia, who are identified as possibly having Special Educational Needs. My research will use a participatory approach, and will collect narratives from the young people and their families in English and Somali, as well as using observations in class and interviews with teachers, to explore how the young people take up, resist or subvert the positionings available to them within educational discourses at home and at school.
