Continuous changes in academic publishing create new opportunities for academic institutions to provide added value services, utilizing locally produced data, upgrading that way the role of both the institution and its members. In this paper we will present the results of a research addressed to Map/GIS Librarians in western world regarding the development of geospatial collections from locally produced data. The purpose of the survey was to investigate whether Map/GIS Librarians have responded to the new influences of the electronic environment taking advantage of IRs in order to develop innovative geospatial collections from the data produced by their members. Results highlight policies, open access and cooperati...

Our analysis appliesto both directed and undirected random graphs, and it covers the range of interestinggraph densities, including densities at which a random graph is disconnected with a giantconnected component. We estimate the number of

In this context, we analyze the queries posed to a digital library and recorded into the Z39.50 session log files and we construct communities of users with common interests, using data mining techniques. One of our main concerns is the construction of meaningful communities that can be used for improving information access. Analysis of the results brings to surface some of the important properties of the task, suggesting the feasibility of a common methodology.

The 28 revised full papers and 6 revised short papers presented together with 2 panel description, the extended abstracts of 20 revised poster and 16 demo papers were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 181 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on services, infrastructures, interaction, ...

Our contributions are the following: we present a distributed performancemanagement framework for measurement, monitoring and QoS based searching in DigitalLibrary Systems. We designed and implemented our performance...

Data consists principally of numeric data, images, and text documents. Programs consist principally of software methods for visualizing and processing data and simulators of natural processes. Data represents both measured physical behavior and the results of simulations. The integration and visualization of scientific repositories into an easily accessed interoperable networked environment is needed in many disciplines for both scientific and ...

Examples from four domains are analyzed to examine similarities and differences. The central thesis of the paper is that deciding when information sharing is appropriate in the presence of risks is an ethical matter and policies and laws that inhibit sharing should be reviewed in this context. This presentation is in the context of SCENS (Secure Content Exchange Negotiation System), ...

In this paper we present a novel, multi-level logging framework that will provide complete coverage of the different aspects of DL usage for user-system interactions. Based on this framework, we can analyse for various DL stakeholders the logging data according to their specific interests. In addition, analysis tools and a freely accessible log data repository will yield synergies and sustainability in DL evaluation and encourage a community for DL ...

Digital library interaction evaluation has, by nature, a user centered perspective, which directs the scientific research to the benefit of the user and narrows the research parameters. In this paper we propose a new framework for the evaluation of interaction and we introduce the concepts of usefulness, usability and performance as the main contributing factors for the creation of a rational and successful interaction. The framework attempts to trace and highlight some of the interaction evaluation requirements and parameters, in ...

Evaluation of digital libraries assesses their effectiveness, quality and overall impact. To facilitate the comparison of different evaluations and to support the re-use of evaluation data, we are proposing a new logging schema. This schema will allow for logging and sharing of a wide array of data about users, systems and their interactions. We discuss the multi-level logging framework presented in [19] and describe how the community can add to and gain from using the framework. The main focus of this paper is the logging of ...
