SERVQUAL measures the gap between the expectations and the perceptions of the customers about the efficiency of services based on five dimensions: (1) tangibles, (2) reliability, (3) responsiveness, (4) assurance, and (5) empathy. Subsequent studies have examined the effectiveness of this model in various fields, such as retail trade and tourism (Finn & Lamb, 1991; Maher et al., 2011). Various critics of this tool state that there is greater focus on customer perceptions than on customer expectations, so that the gap between expected and actual service performance cannot be accurately determined (Daskalaki et al., 2020). In addition, the use of SERVQUAL in measuring the quality of services in museums is quite ineffective. For this reason, Frochot and Hughes (2000), based on the service quality model SERVQUAL, developed another specialized model for evaluating cultural services, the HISTOQUAL scale. The main approach of HISTOQUAL is based on the comparison between visitor perceptions and their expectations. The article analyzes the HISTOQUAL in the Archeological Museums of Greece.

that archaeological site today functions as an interpretative tool for approaching the past of a ... more that archaeological site today functions as an interpretative tool for approaching the past of a wider region and turns the monumental remains into readable and educative material with ramifications into sectors such as history, ideology, politics and religion. 1 The planning process for the conservation and presentation of an archaeological site should focus on discussions about restoration and management, as well as politics and ideology. However, along with the cultural characteristics, the environmental particularities of the landscape also define its new identity. Here exactly lies the singularity of the archaeological site of the spartan sanctuary of Apollo Amyklaios. The advantage of this site of exceptional natural beauty, overlooking the fertile vale of the Eurotas river, with the massif of Taygetos to the west and the Parnon mountain range to the east, is obvious to all. The picture of the area in antiquity, with its highly important monuments, is transferred to us today exclusively through the textual sources and not by the buildings, only scant remnants of which survive. so, ipso facto and occasioned by the views expressed by C. Tilley, s. Hamilton and B. Bender in 2000, namely that «Our work is our creative response to their creativity or, better, the ruins of their creativity», 2 the creativity in the case of Amykles has to turn to other tools and methods. According to the literary sources, during antiquity this site was the most important cult centre of the Lacedaemonians. The hill of Agia Kyriaki, where archaeological investigations, guided by the ancient sources, have located the site of the Apollo Amyklaios sanctuary, lies some 5 km south of sparta, on the northeast outskirts of the

One of the urgent tasks of the project was to survey the Agia Kyriaki hill and the surrounding area in detail and to record in the new plans the evidence surviving from previous research carried out by Ch. Tsountas (1890/91), A. Furtwängler (1904), E. Fiechter (1907) and E. Buschor (1925). The existing condition of the archaeological site was mapped and the surviving parts of the krepis of the temple/Throne, of the Peribolos as well as the later church of st Kyriaki were documented by measured drawings. Most of the in-situ architectural members of the temple/Throne and the Altar, which were either stacked in a pile of stones or dispersed in various places and on the slopes of the hill, were drawn, studied, photographed and identified. All the architectural members from the monuments of the sanctuary were gathered, sorted into categories and fenced inside the archaeological site and the already expropriated area (fig. 2). Thus, any further deterioration of the marbles' surface had been avoided and their protection was secured. Many architectural members of the temple/Throne and the Altar, which were incorporated in the fabric of the churches in modern Amykles, as well as in the nearby communities, were located, photographed and temporarily recorded. Lastly, photographing, drawing and studying those architectural members originating mainly from the temple/Throne presently kept in the internal courtyard of the sparta Archaeological Museum began.

Bowie’s seminal article on the Greeks and their past in the Second Sophistic, the study of Greece in the Roman Empire has been experiencing what has been described in other areas of social sciences and the humanities as a ‘mnemonic turn’. The purpose of this article is to rethink the role and scope of these approaches by revisiting some of their assumptions and by posing a series of related questions: was the Roman conquest a catalyst for the emergence of phenomena of mobilization of the past in Greek societies? If such phenomena articulated conscious local responses to the imperial situation, how uniform were these responses across the Greek mainland? Were Greeks unique in this respect compared to other provincial societies across the empire? Did every use and representation of the past always have an ideological significance that can be read from the available textual and material evidence? Can we classify and describe all these phenomena by using the ‘language of memor...

qui consistunt/negotiantur/morantur, κατοικοῦντες, παρεπιδημοῦντες,

Built around 15 BC by Agrippa, son in law of Augustus, it was located in the centre of the Greek Agora, where still today several remains of the cavea and the nearby orchestra are visible. The orchestra has preserved conspicuous remains of the marble pavement, which is among the most representative ones of imperial Athens. A recent re-examination of the sectilia pavimenta in Athens offered the opportunity to reconsider this large marble floor, that had been excavated and studied in 1950 by Homer Thompson. The detailed analysis of the remains allowed us to fully understand the diachronic development of this pavement, clearly highlighting different phases and restorations of the marble floor in the orchestra.

Research paper thumbnail of GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH: AN ADDED VALUE TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AT THE LACONIAN SANCTUARY OF APOLLON AMYKLAIOS IN SPARTA.

The hill of Haghia Kyriaki, where the site of the central lakonian sanctuary of Apollon Amyklaios has been located around 5 km south of Sparta. The mention of Amyklae in the Homeric catalogue of ships (Il. 2.584) reflects the site’s importance as a Late Bronze to Early Iron Age settlement. Archaeological remains and literary sources bear witness to the great importance of the sanctuary and the related Hyakinthia festival to the people of Lakonia during the Greek and Roman antiquity. In the framework of the Amykles Research Project, commenced in 2005, a new exploration of the entire surface of the site has being conducted.
The site is often under threat from environmental conditions, structural instability and development. Geospatial techniques in combination with other digital documentation techniques, which aim at creating an archaeospatial database named “Apollo” and a 3D model of the site and the structures, provide an extremely useful way to document and protect the spatial characteristics of the site.
The project has demonstrated that TLS is a viable technique for the integrated surveying of cultural heritage monuments that allows obtaining the geometry of the object easily, regardless of its accessibility. The real possibility of acquiring dense geometric information by TLS allows the analysis through a number of different modelling approaches. Combined TLS integrated to the main “Apollo” Geospatial Database will be able to provide much-improved quality of documentation to experts and interested parties as well as to a large number of scholars and members of the public.

Much of the material and data is presented here for the first time. Architecture and geometric pottery retain pride of place in this publication. New evidence from the Mycenaean era throws light on the first open air sanctuary. Information and analysis regarding the provenance of the building material and quarries are here collected for the first time. Of particular importance concerning the history of religion is the reexamination of the testimonia shedding light on the early cults of Hyakinthos and Apollo. Various methodological approaches, possibilities and limitations of the readability were discussed in detail, as well as jointly discoursed questions of possible relationships and interactions with other sanctuaries.

Can we classify and describe all these phenomena by using the ‘language of memory’? By examining these issues, we wish to highlight the complex nature of the evidence and the need to take into account its potential and its limitations when making inferences about remembering as a social and cultural strategy.

By the end of the first century AD the city had been incorporated into the Roman province of Achaea. Along with Athenian independence perished the notion of Greek self-rule. The rest of Achaea was ruled by the governor of Macedonia already since 146 BC, but the numerous defections of Greek cities during the first century BC show that Roman rule was not yet viewed as inevitable.

In spite of the definitive loss of self-rule this was not a period of decline. Attica and the Peloponnese were special regions because of their legacy as cultural and religious centres of the Mediterranean. Supported by this legacy communities and individuals engaged actively with the increasing presence of Roman rule and its representatives. The archaeological and epigraphic records attest to the continued economic vitality of the region: buildings, statues, and lavish tombs were still being constructed. There is hence need to counterbalance the traditional discourses of weakness on Roman Greece, and to highlight how acts of remembering were employed as resources in this complex political situation.

The legacy of Greece defined Greek and Roman responses to the changing relationship. Both parties looked to the past in shaping their interactions, but how this was done varied widely. Sulla fashioned himself after the tyrant-slayers Harmodius and Aristogeiton, while Athenian ephebes evoked the sea-battles of the Persian Wars to fashion their valour. This interdisciplinary volume traces strategies of remembering in city building, funerary culture, festival and association, honorific practices, Greek literature, and political ideology. The variety of these strategies attests to the vitality of the region. In times of transition the past cannot be ignored: actors use what came before, in diverse and complex ways, in order to build the present.
