This poster presents a survey study undertaken to investigate what learning activities students c... more This poster presents a survey study undertaken to investigate what learning activities students considered as more beneficial for learning. A learner centered teaching approach was used to not only improve students understanding and learning engineering design, but also to help students in the acquisition of soft skills. In general there was positive student's feedback on the teaching method. Several activities require some proficiency in English language although the students were non-native speakers of the language. Reasons to know why students resist to some learning activities, such as reading in English, are discussed, and some actions needed to overcome this problem are presented.

Following the Douglas methodology of process design, setting the process flowsheet with reactors and recycle streams is done first, without considering heat integration. Next the sequence of separators is defined. Finally by applying the Pinch analysis to the process streams the heat exchanger network is synthesized and integrated in the simulated process flowsheet. Results show a considerable reduction of heat duties.

Salient features of chemical processes are
complexities that arise when the process contains recycle streams. The way of facing these complexities is by using iterative methods, (modular solution) or using a matrix approach (simultaneous solution). These methods have a lot of capacity and can be useful in studies of simulation of the chemical processes, mainly for analysis, “what if” studies, and forecasting. Both solution approaches are illustrated in the examples.

Desulfurization of petroleum products is necessary for attainment of the lowered legal limits for... more Desulfurization of petroleum products is necessary for attainment of the lowered legal limits for sulfur in many countries. The reduction of organosulfur compounds is accomplished by the hydrodesulphurization (HDS) process. This poster presents, a strategic procedure, to develop a model for the HDS process in which a hydrotreating catalyst, of small particle size, is contacted with atmospheric gas oil and hydrogen. The catalyst used is normally cobalt, molybdenum and nickel finely distributed on alumina extrudates. The experimental conditions covered wide ranges of temperature, pressure, liquid hourly space velocity and gas/oil ratio, which are of commercial interest. A fundamental approach for the reactions kinetics modeling is illustrated with expressions of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood type. Calibration and verification of the model were conducted using data from the pilot plant experiments.

ELECTRE method. The theory behind the ELECTRE method is discussed and a procedure is implemented in the spreadsheet as an aid for the decision making process to select a safety chemical route among competing alternatives. Several indices have been proposed that evaluates aspects relevant to inherent safety, these indices have been used as criteria to compare the competing alternatives.
The selection of the chemical route for the production of acetic acid is presented as a case study, with emphasis in process safety.

Prof. A.L.M., México 07738 D.F., Méx., earcem@ipn.mx. Abstract This poster presents the use of mobile Apps for teaching how to handle hazardous chemicals. Our objective on this ongoing research program is to examine the implementation of smartphones Apps for improving learner outcomes. It was applied to a theoretical course taught in a chemical engineering degree. This study demonstrated that an increasing attention must be paid to the use of emerging technologies that improve student's skills.. We conclude that the smartphone can simplify learning and it could be of a great help when teachers supervise and direct the use of the Apps. Abstract No. 1510-8 Students were asked to rate each activity in terms of importance and their satisfaction with the extent to which each was useful for learning. In addition to asking for their preferences the questionnaire also includes open-ended questions to encourage students to express their opinion thoroughly. Students were asked to indicate the extent of their agreement on each of the ten skills items using a seven-point Likert-type scale. The higher the ranking the greater the level of agreement, most students responded that they didn't thought the mobile phone could be a useful device to use for studying, they feel comfortable using the smartphone Apps. Females spend more time on their phones than males and check their phones more often. Some Apps have helped them to improve the quality of their work. Conclusion Lots of chemistry Applications Many are free, approximately 30%. Some developers have multiple versions of Apps, there are the Lite vs. the Premium versions. The Lite version are usually free that offer consumers the basic functionality. The premium version can have a price tag of 1to1 to 1to10. At such affordability the number of Apps in the App stores and the number of downloads is doubling every year. Teaching how to handle hazardous chemicals with smartphones Apps Why is safety in chemicals manipulation such a big concern in schools? Because potential exposure to hazards poses an immediate threat to life. Hazardous is a broader term referring to a substance that causes immediate or long term effect to people and their environment. Accidental release of hazardous in the chemical lab are unpredictable. Students must know the proper procedures for responding to emergencies. Safe handling cannot be ensured without safety information. The most common means for providing information are the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and labels. The MSDS are important reference for health and safety information for many chemicals. Container labels provide the basic information that a person needs to know to handle a particular product safely, they show how a chemical dangerous it is, it explains what to wear when using the chemicals, also shows directions for immediate first aid. Also valuable is the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) labeling system, indicating the health, flammability and reactivity hazards of chemicals in a diamond shaped object, called NFPA hazard rating diamond.

The first law of thermodynamics, which states that "the total quantity of energy in a closed syst... more The first law of thermodynamics, which states that "the total quantity of energy in a closed system is constant; when energy disappears in one form it must appear simultaneously in another form". Mathematically we have: The first law merely allows us to quantify energy flows but tells us nothing about the quality of various energy streams. It does not give us a clue as to whether energy is being used efficiently. The second law tells us that the quality of energy tends to degrade in all real world processes. As a fixed quantity of energy moves through a series of process, the fraction of total energy remaining available to do useful work is steadily decreasing. From here the entropy balance becomes: A thermodynamic measure of useful energy is the Exergy (Ex) or the availability (A) and is defined as [1,2], Ex = A = H-ToS It is usually considered as the useful energy that can be extracted when matter is brought to equilibrium with the surroundings, commonly referenced to an ambient temperature, To = 77 °F. A change in Exergy represents the maximum amount of shaft work that can be extracted from a system as it flows from its present state to a new state. Conversely, it also represents the minimum work required to achieve a change in the process. This available work is defined in terms of the Exergy change or:-Ws = ΔEx = ΔH-ToΔS Lost work, LW originates from the irreversibilities needed to drive any real process. Ideal work exists as a mathematical construct only for a process which can take an infinite time and utilizes infinitesimal driving force. However, lost work in real processes is very much a function of the process used and its surroundings. To analyze such a process, it must be broken down into carefully defined segments which allow calculation of the enthalpy and entropy changes. Lost work is caused by irreversibilities. Exergy analysis was applied to a heat exchanger network, followed by the application of pinch analysis in order to determine those equipments that show high degree of irreversibility in the system. In other words, those heat exchangers that use the energy in a deficient way, and so, are main candidates for improvement and retrofit that can produce great savings in energy consumption. This study was applied to the chilling section of the ethylene plant of Petroquimica Escolin, a petrochemical plant of the PEMEX consortium of Mexico. This section has the target of progressively chilling the process gas and its condensation in four stages at different levels of low temperature, and to recover the ethylene and send it as a feed to the demethanizer tower. The exergy analysis was applied to each unit of the plant and the process efficiency was determined, as well as the lost work in the process steps and of each exchanger involved in the system. Afterwards, the pinch analysis was applied to those heat exchangers that were determined by the analysis as the most likely for heat integration. The problem that is presented in this work doesn't have a pinch point and neither requires heating services. Using propylene and ethylene as coolants provides the cooling requirements. A retrofit design was obtained that compares reasonably well with the actual design; a $56,100 saving was calculated. The proposal includes four new heaters and the elimination of other three. The new heat integration achieves a reduction of energy consumption while using the heat exchangers that requires ethylene and propylene as refrigerants.
