However, there have been few systems in which farmers are assured of a market for their produce, leave alone a remunerative price. Farmers have on occasion had to throw away their produce for want of buyers. While this is one side of the coin, on the other is the agri-based and food industry, which requires timely and adequate input of quality agricultural produce. This underlying paradox of the Indian agricultural scenario has given birth to the concept of Contract Farming, which promises to provide a proper linkage between the 'farm and market.'

The planned localisations of irrigated area are rarely fully achieved. Similarly, the O&M costs itself often exceed the annual collection of user charges, becoming a perpetual burden to State. In order to address these two issues, involving water users (farmers) in the O&M of projects was considered a viable option. This case study examines the experience of 2 WUAs in Andhra Pradesh in Community Management of Irrigation Projects.

Review of the Book Farming Futures on Agri Social Enterprises
In a market flooded with books on leadership, which one do you read? " What do Leaders Really Do?... more In a market flooded with books on leadership, which one do you read? " What do Leaders Really Do? " is a book that stands out in the crowd. It offers insight into the mind and methods of leaders from a diverse pool such as the Army (Major General Cordingley, Commander, Desert Rats), Intelligence (Dame Rimington, Director General, MI5), Sports (Nasser Hussain, Captain, England Cricket Team), Sports Administration (Sebastian Coe, Chairman, London Organising Committee of Olympic Games), and Broadcasting (Greg Dyke, Director General, BBC). The book is based on detailed interviews conducted with these leaders, where they explain themselves and their actions which brought them fame and recognition in their areas of work. A key thread that runs through the profile of all leaders studied is the must have core values of honesty, integrity and moral courage. To this is added the passion that they bring to their job. All the leaders say that they never started out to become leaders, but when the situation arose, they sized up to the position. While the nature versus nurture debate on leadership has no finality, all of the leaders studied credit their achievements in large measure to their upbringing, teachers and mentors. All leaders draw a tremendous amount of strength from the vision of where they wish to take their institution and the ability to communicate it and get everybody involved. Further, leaders have an instinctive ability to know the right time to take a decision. They are able to weigh up facts quickly and identify important information and do not shy away from accepting risk as a part of life and taking ultimate responsibility for decisions taken. Change management is one of the key areas of action for leaders. Leaders prepare the organization for change; persuade people to change and own change programmes without delegation. They involve employees in decisions and identify quick, visible wins that gain goodwill for long term change. Effective leaders have a high degree of self-awareness of their strengths and weaknesses and adapt an appropriate style. They are visible and accessible and avoid setting themselves apart from employees, while at the same time keeping professional distance. True leaders are inspirational and boost morale. They create an atmosphere where employees are valued and trusted and concentrate on creating a framework that enables employees to do their job efficiently. They delegate decision making downward and recognize and celebrate success and allow people to take risk. They are seen to rarely rely on motivational speeches.
