In a daily basis, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa speaks, mostly, of what he considers more strategic in the national agenda setting, extending permanently his action to the Government areas of influence. This is legitimized by two forces that this President does not neglect: the popularity that he gathers together with the Portuguese people and the media attention he causes in journalists. This is where his strength lies to test some of the presidential powers set by the Constitution. In this contribution, we will identify how the President developed his powers, considering the Portuguese daily press news published about himself, during the first two years of his term (9 March 2016 to 9 March 2018). Based on an universe of 1.537 news articles published during this period, in Diario de Noticias, Jornal de Noticias, Publico and Correio da Manha , we identify the presidential powers that have been highlighted in the press, and we undertake a deep analysis around three political situations that played a role in the way the President avenged his position next to the Government: the President’s political influence on the course of the Portuguese public bank ( Caixa Geral de Depositos ); the coordination of the operations on the swipe of military equipment in Tancos; and the President’s support to the fire victims which affected the Centre region of Portugal, in 2017. The expected results are to examine the proximity between voters and elected politicians, promoted by the presidential figure, and amplified by the press. In other words, the aim is to identify the molds and the role of the press as an essential engine towards the presidential political message and personal projection, in terms of the use of the public media space.

Accordingly, there is a need to better understand this phenomenon and to analyze it in the light of a particular theory. However, there is a scarcity of AI theories in the service management literature. In order to obtain a better understanding of the subject, we have conducted a systematic review of the literature to provide a comprehensive analysis of the theories developed regarding AI in service management. The results have showed a wide range of theories, but not all directly related with AI; the latter are smaller in number making it difficult to draw a clear pattern. At current days, researchers are slowly advancing with new AI theories and moving away from those already in use, such as in computer science, ethics, philosophical theories, and so on.

This new dynamic has caught the attention of political leaders who are finding ways to restrain or regulate AI in public services, but also of scholars who are raising legitimate concerns about its impacts on public employment. In light of the above, the aim of this research is to analyze the influence of AI on public employment and the ways politics are reacting. Design / Methodology / Approach: We have performed a systematic literature review to disclose the state-of-the-art and to find new avenues for future research. Results: The results indicate that public services require four kinds of intelligence-mechanical, analytical, intuitive, and empathetic-albeit, with much less expression than in private services. Limitations of the investigation: This systematic review provides a snapshot of the influence of AI on public employment. Thus, our research does not cover the whole body of knowledge, but it presents a holistic understanding of the phenomenon. Practical implications: As private companies are typically more advanced in the implementation of AI technologies, the for-profit sector may provide significant contributions in the way states can leverage public services through the deployment of AI technologies. Originality / Value: This article highlights the need for states to create the necessary conditions to legislate and regulate key technological advances, which, in our opinion, has been done, but at a very slow pace.

In this article we sought to identify media repertoires (patterns of use of news media) in Portugal, in order to understand how do people make sense of their media preferences and how does news consumption integrate the daily habits of the audience. In this sense, we have developed an analysis of news media consumption patterns grounded on a mixed approach of qualitative and quantitative methods based on Q-Methodology (Davis & Michelle, 2011), using a sample of 36 participants. The analysis of news consumption patterns allowed the identification and analysis of seven media repertories according to the use, relevance and usefulness attributed by the subjects to the news media. The results show hybrid media consumption profiles and a tendency for the consumption of news in a mobile and multiplatform logic, although traditional media continue to play a determining role in the media repertoires in Portugal.

At national level, party member activity has significant features that are deeply seated in the nation’s political culture. At an individual level, party activism is a mission particular to each person. It is not only part of his or her unique life story but serves also as a link in the chain of party sustainability. Party mobilisation and political socialisation warrant further development in the Portuguese context, particularly the study of the choice of party members’ activity upstream. The main objective of this article is to identify, in a comparative perspective, sociodemographic basic traits, and a set of essential political and ideological attitudes of party members of three main Portuguese parties with parliamentary representation (Socialist Party – PS, Social Democratic Party – PSD, and Centro ...

How are the media exerting their mediation role? How are the media re-(a)presenting the political world to society? Are different media voices offering diversified and complementary perspectives on politics? How is propaganda perceived within different democratic and economic contexts? Is political trust and mistrust shaping the strategy of propaganda? These questions are addressed in theoretical and empirical chapters in a book that addresses problems which are in need of urgent discussion, as their impact and consequences are deeply transforming politics and the way politics is communicated, lived and understood by its main actors. Within this framework, Political Communication Studies has a major role in identifying and urging new diagnosis of, and insights into, the political and the media systems, and, above all, how both the people and political institutions can both survive crisis and improve democracy in the Lusophone world. This book aims at making a contribution to that acknowledgment.

This study contributes to filling this gap by examining an understudied case, namely party members in Portuguese political parties. The key objective of this article is to make a contribution to the study of activism and dedication to the party, in a comparative perceptive, considering different types of parties. The survey applied was based on an on-line questionnaire conducted within the MAPP (Members and Activists of Political Parties) research network. The dataset included members of several parties ranging from typical catch-all parties (PS - Socialist Party; PSD - Social Democratic Party) to elite-based types (CDS-PP - Social Democratic Centre-Popular Party), as well as 'movement' party types (BE - Left Bloc; LIVRE). In doing so, it discloses new opportunities and discusses its implications to be considered by policy-makers. The research uses a systematic literature review, which includes more than one technique of data analysis in order to generate comprehensiveness and rich knowledge, we use: a bibliometric analysis and a content analysis. While artificial intelligence is identified as an extension of digital transformation, the results suggest the need to deepen scientific research in the fields of public administration, governmental law and business economics, areas where digital transformation still stands out from artificial intelligence. Although bringing together public and private sectors, to collaborate in the public service delivery, presents major advantages to policy makers, evidence has also shown the existence of negative effects of su...
