More and more variables are present and unpredictable effects are observed. The complexity of systems calls for increased awareness and problem-solving abilities. In this survey, design in general, and design of the user experience in particular, is positioned in the scope of complexity. Moreover, the design reasoning and methods are framed by culturally determined factors and cognitive styles. This survey aims to converge complexity and complex problem solving, design of the user experience, and cultural variations, reviewing bodies of work to inspire and map interdependencies that shape future challenges in systems and experience design.

This application is presented as an example of a larger system dealing with media understanding, representation and dissemination. An object model for media representation and processing is described and WeatherDigest is presented in terms of this object model. The concepts explored in WeatherDigest are then generalized to a repository of multimedia information (media server). This server can handle requests from clients with different requirements allowing to retrieve the same information in multiple formats.

A problem that we identified is that students often do not engage with the subject matter, especially when dealing with complex domain representations, even when high quality hypermedia resources are available. With the widespread of multimedia content and the emergence of massive information resources there is a need for powerful and effective learning tools that can ...

The production process converts existing audio tapes and OCR-based digitalization of text books into full-fledged, multiple synchronized, multimodal digital books. The framework deals with the content organization processes and User Interface definition. The first one identifies content units and its relations. The framework also permits to balance the complexity and flexibility of the generated DTBs, in order to cope with the resources provided on the different execution platform.

This approach has been used in different ways through history, but the technological advances of the ''Third Industrial Revolution'' offer new perspectives on this topic, along with various design innovations. To face this demand, architects must develop new strategies rooted in performance, connectivity and control, and process them to support and inform design. In order to explore these challenges, a group of researchers organized a summer school in 2016. The partnership between ISCTE-IUL and Sapienza University of Rome emerged as an opportunity to join an international community to present recent research, teaching or practice related to

Decision processes can be designed with more emphasis either on exchanging meanings (discussing issues) or exchanging artefacts (gene rating and structuring topics). Our problem is that, given a particular case to be discussed in an electronic meeting room, we do not know how to design the meeting for best performance. The paper builds a framework for studying this problem based on the n otion of communication mode. The experiments already made confirm that quality of results varies when different communication modes are used and show that meetings that do not exchange meanings result in solutions with inferior quality.
