Research paper thumbnail of Manufacturing Information Systems Integration: A Proposal Using SIP

When a factory wants to move towards Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) the integration of these commercial tools should be considered. Therefore, a possible approach to enhance production can be to consider the integration of already existent system’s tools using a standard data exchange format. UNINOVA - Institute for the Development of New Technologies, in the scope of a European project, has been developing a STEP (ISO10303) based toolkit (SIP) to aid the integration of these applications and the management of the achieved integrated system. Up to the moment some managerial and engineering software applications have been integrated using SIP inside industrial companies. The software packages used, the steps followed to integrate them, and the results obtained using SIP in these manufacturing environments will be described...

It is based on an integrated hardware/software environment including CNC lathe and mill machines. The machining process is monitored in real time using sensors for vibrations, sound and power consumption. This paper presents our approach for sensor signal modelling using auto regressive stochastic models. Models for machining process characterisation have already been investigated for different situations. The applicability of the ARMA(p,q) model for process monitoring and evolution tracking, are discussed as well as the results obtained with real data are presented.

There is a great potential for applications to take advantage of these available resources, to perceive and interact with the world around us, namely to sen'e as a user interface to interact with controlled devices. Recently beyond the necessary speaker and microphone, cell phones incorporate more sensing, processing and storage capabilities as well as alternative communication systems, e.g. digital camera, Bluetooth. This paper addresses, in particular, the Near Field Communication (NFC) incorporated in cell phones and enumerates some of its main promising applications like in device monitoring and control.

The Logisim platform was adopted as the base digital simulation tool, since it has a modular implementation in Java. All the hardware devices used in the laboratory course was designed as components accessible by the simulation tool, and integrated as a library. Moreover, this new library allows the user to access an external interface. This work was motivated by the needed to achieve better learning times on co-design projects, based on hardware and software implementations, and to reduce the laboratory time, decreasing the operational costs of engineer teaching. Furthermore, the use of virtual laboratories in educational environments allows the students to perform functional tests, before they went to a real laboratory. Moreover, these functional tests allow to speed-up the learning when a problem based approach methodology is considered.

In fact, the flexibility brought by last innovations in Information Technologies (lT) speedup the creation of a new generation of low cost IT based tools. However the need for a common understanding among the panoply of emergent and particular contributions associated to the need of a global and interoperable infrastructure have brought many application difficulties. Beyond those integration problems a secure and flexible communication framework is also a key to achieve such global infrastructure to support Electronic Commerce. Entrepreneurs condition the application of such innovations in front of clear guarantees of privacy, integrity and authenticity in addition to high quality trusted services. This paper presents some contributes to such secure infrastructure that are being proposed and developed inside the European ESPRIT project PRODNET.

The novel method, denoted Accumulated Step Deviation (ASD), was devised within the scope of a European Space Agency (ESA) project, which main objective was to develop two monitoring systems: one for monitoring a drill and another for terrain detection. This project included an automatic learning module, where the ASD method was used. The ASD method is based on the traditional data preparation process, which begins with data acquisition from sensors and ends with the automatic generation of fuzzy sets to be used as input variables by the monitoring system. An illustrative example is used to discuss the behaviour of the ASD method and perform a comparative study between the ASD method and a traditional Trapezoidal method.

Then we show how the MODI project is aiming at monitoring and diagnosing a drilling and sampling system for Martian exploration rover, and explain how MODI implements a fuzzy system to monitor and diagnose a drill. Last, we present the preliminary test results of MODI and demonstrate that MODI allows monitoring mileage of the drill and preventing dramatic failures, hence extending the drilling operations capability of a Martian rover in the long term.

After an introduction to the application domain, the basic requirements and the structure of a suitable base software environment are described, emphasizing the heterogeneity issue. The logical model of the implemented monitoring and prognostic system as well as the integrating agents and machining model are presented and discussed.

It is discussed a service framework based on a peer to peer distributed architecture where peers offer specialized services contributing to the execution of virtual business processes. Those specialized services are executed in a system container with "plug and play" features alld some of them assume the responsibility for the execution and coordination of the business processes. The paper discusses the underlying strategy that has motivated BRISA. as ITS end-user. to promote all open strategy for the ITS-IBus integration framework. It is also discussed a strategy based on a distributed service framework offering all added flexibility to virtual business process executioll and coordination.
