Emotion regulation difficulties are one of the psychological factors that play a role in the development and maintenance of co-occurring psychopathologies such as depression and eating disorders. The current study, which was conducted during the coronavirus pandemic, it was aimed to examine the mediating role of difficulty in emotion regulation in the relationship between risky eating attitudes and depressive symptoms in emerging adults. The research sample consists of 371 people, 227 women and 144 men, between the ages of 18-25. Beck Depression Inventory, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, and Eating Attitudes Test-Short Form were used for data collection. The data were collected online, during the coronavirus pandemic. The results of the simple mediation model test showed that the direct effect of eating attitudes on depression symptoms was not significant, but the indirect effect was. Accordingly, eating attitudes were not directly associated with depressive symptoms, but it leads an increase in depressive symptoms through increasing the emotion regulation difficulties. The effects of gender and body mass index, which were included in the mediation model to control the effect on depression symptoms, were not significant. Findings of the study indicated that risky eating attitudes in emerging adults lead to increase in emotion regulation difficulties, which in turn lead to increase in depressive symptoms. The findings and their clinical implications are discussed in the light of the relevant literature.

The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of a Turkish version of the PBS in a nonclinical sample. Method: A total of 457 adult participants aged 18-64 years were enrolled in this study. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability and structure, concurrent and criterion-related predictive validity analyses were conducted to ensure reliability and validity for use of the scale with a Turkish population. As part of the validity study, all of the participants were asked to complete a battery of self-report scales: the Compulsive Buying Scale, the Brief Symptom Inventory, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-Short Form, and the PBS. In order to examine the test-retest reliability, 75 participants were asked to complete the questionnaire once again 2 weeks after the first administration. Results: The results of this study revealed that the PBS had good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The findings supported concurrent and criterion-related predictive validity, and a 2-factor structure, consistent with the original form. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the PBS is a valid and reliable measurement tool that will add to understanding of pathological buying behavior.

Cognitive Theory (Beck et al., 2004) and Interpersonal Circumplex Model (Leary, 1957) explaining ... more Cognitive Theory (Beck et al., 2004) and Interpersonal Circumplex Model (Leary, 1957) explaining cognitive and interpersonal patterns of personality disorders (PD) are well established in personality literature. Cognitive Theory emphasizes the importance of dysfunctional schemas in the development and maintenance of the personality disorders. Consistently, several other theoreticians (Dimaoggio et al., 2006; Fiske & Haslam, 2005; Safran, 1990) suggest that interpersonal problems, that individuals with personality disorders primarily suffer from, are originated from maladaptive interpersonal schemas which organize social relationships. Interpersonal Circumplex Model was developed based on the Interpersonal Theory of Personality (Sullivan, 1953) and defines interpersonal behaviors with two basic dimensions namely, affiliation and dominance. Accordingly, interpersonal problems can be explained with the combination of these two axes on a coordinate’s space called circumplex (Alden et al...

Based on the proposition of cognitive theory, different dimensions of interpersonal problems which were assessed through the coordinates of interpersonal circumplex model were expected to be associated with specific categories of personality beliefs namely, deprecating, inflated, and ambivalent personality beliefs. Participants were 997 volunteer adults (304 males and 693 females) from Turkey, between the ages of 18 and 61. They completed the personality belief questionnaire, basic personality traits inventory, and inventory of interpersonal problems measures. Considering the well-established representations of personality disorders in Big Five space, and correspondence between five-factor model of personality and interpersonal circumplex model, the present study examined the hypothesized associations via a robust analysis where strongly relevant personality factors were statistically controlled for in each analysis. Results revealed that different dimensions of interpersonal problems distinctively associated with three personality belief categories; deprecating beliefs were associated with over-friendly submissiveness, inflated beliefs were associated with dominance, and ambivalent beliefs were associated with hostile/cold dominance. Findings supported the validity of cognitive formulations (view of self and view of others) of the personality disorders proposed by the cognitive theory, also highlighted the priority of interpersonal problems in personality psychopathology.

The cognitive model of personality disorders (PDs) proposes different conceptualizations for PDs ... more The cognitive model of personality disorders (PDs) proposes different conceptualizations for PDs and emphasizes the role of cognitive schemata and beliefs in affective experience. The present study, using the tripartite and cognitive model as a framework, suggests that dysfunctional beliefs of PDs are distinctively associated with positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA). Findings revealed that after controlling for general psychological symptoms, NA, the common factor for all PDs, was associated with only Avoidant, Dependent, and Borderline personality beliefs. For PA, results were in line with the expectations formulated on positive or negative content of self and others schemas. Antisocial, Histrionic, Narcissistic, and Obsessive-Compulsive personality beliefs characterized by a competent, autonomous, and superior view of self and an exploitable, inferior view of others predicted high PA, whereas Avoidant, Dependent, and Borderline personality beliefs characterized by an inadequate, vulnerable, inferior view of self and an idealized, self-sufficient view of others predicted low PA.

In Turkey, university education is highly valued, and is considered a key to success and happiness in life. The gatekeeper for a university education is a central entrance exam. The entire process is lengthy, hard, and anxiety-provoking. Objective. Our study aimed to investigate the factors associated with test anxiety related to the university entrance exam. The effects of the perceived attitudes of the student's mother and father on his or her test anxiety are examined separately, and beyond the effect of other risk factors. Design. The participants were 102 high school students and recent graduates between the ages of 14 and 19. Data was collected just before a test anxiety workshop, which was designed as part of an open day activity in a private, non-profit university. The workshop featured an interactive presentation about general anxiety, test anxiety, and coping strategies, which was followed by a progressive relaxation exercise. Results. It was found that having a lower GPA score, being female, and having an increased level of neuroticism, as well as an increased level of perceived paternal acceptance and paternal control, were associated with higher levels of test anxiety. Conclusion. The university entrance exam preparation period in Turkey is quite stressful for the students and creates an economic strain for their families. Considering that fathers are usually the financial authority figure within the households, paternal attitudes might predominantly affect the test anxiety level experienced by the student. In addition to paternal control, paternal acceptance might also be a source of stress since it, like control, includes "expectations" for the student's success.

Method: Our study included 1298 adult participants from the normal population (411 females and 887 males) between the ages of 18 and 68. In order to establish reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the IIP-C, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, split-half reliability coefficients, and concurrent and criterion validity studies were conducted. The validity study analyzed correlations with the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, the Brief Symptom Inventory, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the Basic Personality Traits Inventory. However, how emotion regulation strategies contribute to the association between interpersonal problems and borderline personality symptomatology have not been well-addressed in the literature. The aim of the current study is to examine the mediator role of cognitive emotion regulation strategies between interpersonal problems and borderline personality beliefs. The study consisted of 648 (381 women and 267 male) people from Turkey. In addition to Socio Demographic Form, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), Inventory of Interpersonal Problems Circumplex Scales (IIP-32) and Borderline Personality Belief Subscale (PBQ) were used to collect data from participants. Results showed that negative cognitive emotion regulation strategies, particularly catastrophization, blaming-others and self-blame mediated the relationship between interpersonal problems and borderline personality beliefs. With the cognitive level of assessment, the findings of the current study provide enlightening information to understand the underlying processes of the borderline personality pattern, as well as promising clinical implications to improve intervention programs within cognitive therapy approaches.
