KOROR, Palau – Qantas has been chosen to operate the Palau Paradise Express, a direct flight service connecting Brisbane, Australia, to Koror, Palau. This transition, announced in a joint statement by Palau President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, marks a significant development in Pacific air travel.

The Palau Paradise Express, which began operating in May 2024 under Air Niugini and later shifted to Air Nauru, will now be run by Qantas. The service is expected to continue until at least November 2025. This announcement coincides with the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Palau and Australia, underscoring the strength of their partnership.

“We appreciate Australia for partnering with us to promote economic activity between our two nations,” President Whipps said during the joint media release. “The flight makes it easier for tourists and businesspeople to travel and encourages trade and commerce. It also creates opportunities for education and workforce training.”

Minister Wong highlighted the significance of this partnership in enhancing connectivity across the Pacific. “Australia and Palau are expanding connectivity and increasing tourism, trade, and business opportunities. The Palau Paradise Express is a testament to the closeness of our partnership,” she said.

In a press conference, Palau’s Minister of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism, and Development (MHRCTD), Ngirai Tmetuchl, explained the transition from Air Niugini to Air Nauru before Qantas took over. “We’re pleased to announce the extension of this service for another year,” he said. “Qantas will connect cities in Australia and New Zealand, making it easier for travelers from these regions to visit Palau.”

The new service will also enhance global connectivity through partnerships with major airlines such as American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Japan Airlines, allowing seamless transfers for travelers. “This opens up new markets, boosting Palau’s economy,” Tmetuchl added.

President Whipps expressed his gratitude for the airlines that have contributed to the evolution of the Palau Paradise Express. “I want to thank Air Niugini for being the first to provide the service, and I appreciate the support of the Australian government and Air Nauru. Our goal is always to improve service and access more markets.”

He also noted the advantages of Qantas’ involvement. “Qantas will connect every city in Australia and New Zealand, and flights to Brisbane will provide easier access to Palau.”

As Qantas takes over this key route, both nations look forward to strengthening ties and expanding opportunities for tourism and economic growth. The Palau Paradise Express is set to play a vital role in enhancing connectivity and fostering collaboration between Australia and Palau.
