Civil Engineering and Architecture

This paper discusses the potential for reducing the energy consumption of residential apartments ... more This paper discusses the potential for reducing the energy consumption of residential apartments built on slopes in Amman, Jordan, by proposing new regulations to ensure adequate access to solar radiation. The energy-conscious concept has appeared around the world with rising oil prices and a rise of high residential buildings. It is necessary to consider the possibilities of maximizing the use of solar energy in a building through an architectural design strategy. This leads to mandatory regulations at the urban planning and building design level. This paper provides an overview of the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) regulations in force regarding the availability of sunlight and achieving a healthy building environment. Analytical scientific methods were used in the work. Computer simulations were performed using a parametric design approach to make new decisions to establish new height and setbacks dimensions for apartment buildings in Amman. The present study provides workable guidance based on determining the optimal distance between condominiums on sloping ground, through which both the architects and the urban designers will be able to define the number of floors that will receive sufficient natural lighting.

One of the most important factors shaping the comfort of the environment is the factor of physical and visual accessibility for both city residents and tourists. Jordan's architectural heritage sites are either integrated into the structure of modern cities or are closely intertwined. Therefore, it is important to understand the meaning of architectural heritage sites integrated into the structure of our cities in addressing the humanization of the city. The theoretical approach is based on the concept of Universal Design where the criteria of the analysis of architectural heritage sites were formulated. It aims to explore how architectural monuments, which are an integral part of the historical heritage sites, affect the humanization of Jordanian cities, and are adapted for disabled people. The methodological basis of the article was a full-scale observation of the architectural heritage sites of Amman and Madaba. The study concluded that architectural monuments are an important factor to stimulate the process of humanization of the city. The need to ensure free physical and visual access to the monument necessitates the adoption of measures by the city authorities, which at the same time improve the environment of the city which are close to the architectural monuments. These measures increase the level of humanization of the city as a whole and promote equal rights and opportunities for disabled people with different ages and social groups.

used in construction. Earth is amongst the first known materials to man that had been used in building. This material has many notable and
distinguished properties together with some flaws and imperfections that must be assessed, studied and reduced to enable working with
it. Methods have varied when it came to using this material in construction both in the past and the present, which depended mainly on
environmental determinants including climate, soil quality, and obtainable materials in addition to the nature of available expertise. Nowadays, earth has received ample attention acting as a solution for different issues in industrial and developing worlds alike, where the industrial world suffers from pollution and energy problems and the developing world suffers from housing and unemployment problems. The main objective of this paper is to go over the properties of earth and its application in the new field of architecture in Jordan, while pinpointing the main aspects to develop this material to make possible using it to the highest degree conceivable in present and future architecture.

psychological needs of the residents. The important of this study lay on providing an advanced method to find out resident’s impressions for
residential unit design; this could be applied through adopting a simulation software which provides a prospective for residents to experience living in these units hypothetically, this study aims to apply the principles of the pre-occupancy evaluation on residential unit design. Descriptive and analytical methods was adopted in this paper, findings would support residential apartment design process where this study will serve as a basis cornerstone for future studies of architectural design and it will have predicted the proportion of resident’s satisfaction before starting the construction process this will help in reducing cost \ time to obtain the best architectural design for residential units. The sample of the study consisted of 25 people. The criteria for the personal interviews were analyzed using the SPSS program. POE has proven effective in predicting the success of the design of residential units in terms of deciding whether the space for internal facilities is sufficient or not and also their satisfaction with the interior decorations. As for POE ability to measure privacy, it shows the ability to assess internal privacy, and it failed in its ability to measure external privacy

Hence, the main research problem is determining the building envelope shape effect, whether curved or tilted, so as to be more effective in the location of solar cells on its surface and measure the efficiency of each; therefore, the study model could be divided into the design of the building envelope (independent variable) and solar absorption efficiency (variable dependent) where the basic criterion will be environmental suitability and sustainability. Methodology of the study will be based on the theoretical study, the collection of information and descriptive analytical method, in addition to the practical approach and the use of simulation software programs to reach the most important conclusions and recommendations.

used in construction.

Heritage is what best portrays identity and originality, and is considered the first mark of civilizations that dominated then perished in the area of the architectural heritage across Jordan and Saudi Arabia; our study focus, their architectural heritage is found to be a distinguished art and a legacy that differ from the rest of the region by its variations as a result of the many historic eras that both countries have witnessed. This paper will address the issue of conserving architecture and urban heritage and its development within the Jordanian and Saudi experience, which is characterized by its abundance and diversity. The paper will review the concepts of development of the process of preserving architectural heritage, where not only the customary processes were approached but the community and environment were included as well.
The primary research question is determined by the nature of the factors that influence the attainment of the architectural and urban preservation approach, which will be stated at the end of this study. The paper at hand presume that any city acquires its architectural character from the consistency and harmony between its components over various successive eras, hence, one of the most important and notable projects that was implemented in southern Jordan and northwestern Saudi Arabia will be examined, this project is connected to the preservation of architectural and urban heritage as well as the rehabilitation of these areas, an analysis of the steps of execution of selected models that include the most important of these areas will be conducted. The paper aims to identify the components that ensure that the preservation process is auspicious and interactive with the surrounding environment in a sustainable and satisfactory by the onlookers. This study will adopt the descriptive analytical method with which information will be collected, field visits, photographs and personal interviews with the concerned parties will be used. The acquired data will be analyzed to introduce results and recommendations.
