Conservation of Calligraphy by Calligrapher Hayrettin Bey, 2024

The line plate was first examined by visual inspection with visible (VIS) light, raking light (RAK), ultraviolet light (UV) and infrared light (IR). These examinations were occasionally supported by light microscopy. Deteriorations and damages were determined with the obtained data and appropriate legends were created and processed on the line plate’s picture with the help of the Adobe Photoshop program. In addition, samples were taken and analyzed with SEM-EDX in order to understand whether gold and silver leaf were used in the text part and its frame.
In light of the information obtained in the documentation, the conservation-restoration process has been started. The surface of the artwork, which was determined to have been repaired before, was first cleaned from the very thick and haphazardly applied old varnish. Thus, the inward concave-shaped deformation of the picture caused by surface tension has been eliminated. Then, respectively; firstly, the blistered parts of the paper support were consolidated. After the filling, retouching and varnishing processes, the frame was restored and the conservation work was completed.

The method allows to evaluate the deterioration state of the structures, gathering information about their current preservation state and allowing to predict in advance sensitive areas of the structures where deterioration may arise in the future. Since there are differences in the heat transfer of original limestone materials, and repair mortars or imitations, the regions where dirt deposits form in the different materials and deformations of their surfaces are also different. The thermographic analyses (in particular, thermal mapping) thus allow to evaluate deterioration in the materials and help determining the factors that cause the deterioration of the structure, providing relevant data for the design of an effective conservation planning for the structures and helping the protection-repair works. This study applies the thermographic method to the evaluation of the deterioration state of the Faculty of Letters of the Istanbul University South external facade, with was built under the influence of the Second National Architecture movement and investigated by Architects Sedat Hakkı Eldem and Emin Onat. In order to protect the historical stone structures and to make the necessary optimum interventions, the deterioration of the building must be detected. In addition to visual analysis in detecting deterioration, the results obtained from laboratory studies are important for determining the factors that affect the deterioration of the structure. Determining the sources that cause deterioration in historical stone structures, constitutes an important step in planning conservation and restoration studies and determining the main line of the technics to be made.
The subject of this study was created within the scope of researching the deterioration and cleaning methods in historical stone buildings and evaluating the sample of the south facade of Istanbul University Faculty of Letters. Istanbul University Faculty of Letters, which was designed by Sedat Hakkı Eldem and Emin Onat under the influence of II. National Architectural Movement, southern facade was investigated determination of the deterioration and cleaning methods. Factors causing deterioration in the structure were determined by various analysis methods and evaluated by comparing cleaning recommendations.
In this study, the methods and techniques carried out to determine the factors affecting the deterioration of the structure of the İstanbul University Faculty of Letters, which is among one of the most important structures of the history of architecture, and cleaning suggestions to eliminate the deterioration are explained.

Hat levhalarında; Kurân-ı Kerîm'den âyetler, âyetlerden bölümler, hadisler ile insanlığı iyilik yapmaya, doğruluğa davet eden, ibadete ve tevekküle özendiren sözlere yer verilmiştir. Hat levhaları genellikle camilere asılmakla birlikte, doğru yolu gösteren ve ruhlara ferahlık veren ifadeleri nedeniyle halk tarafından da önemsenir, aileler mali durumlarına göre konaklarının, evlerinin duvarlarını hatlarla donatırdı.
