Simulation can be used as a tool for planning and analysis of a construction method. Using simula... more Simulation can be used as a tool for planning and analysis of a construction method. Using simulation technique, a contractor could design optimally resources associated with a construction method and compare to other methods based on several criteria, such as productivity, waste, and cost. This paper discusses the use of simulation using Norwegian Method of Tunneling (NMT) for a 472-meter tunneling work in the Cisumdawu Toll Road project. Primary and secondary data were collected to provide useful information for simulation as well as problems that may be faced by the contractor. The method was modelled using the CYCLONE and then simulated using the WebCYCLONE. The simulation could show the duration of the project from the duration model of each work tasks which based on literature review, machine productivity, and several assumptions. The results of simulation could also show the total cost of the project that was modeled based on journal construction & building unit cost and online websites of local and international suppliers. The analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the method was conducted based on its, wastes, and cost. The simulation concluded the total cost of this operation is about Rp. 900,437,004,599 and the total duration of the tunneling operation is 653 days. The results of the simulation will be used for a recommendation to the contractor before the implementation of the already selected tunneling operation.

ENT provide unparalleled opportunities for the construction industry to introduce new and innovative way of processing information. These opportunities also present a number of challenges in terms of how to plan for and implement ENT services. There is a significant potential for large benefits :from the correctly developed and applied ENT solutions for construction projects activities. This paper presents an assessment model for determining utility of various ENT services and the optimal configuration of ENT services for D/B projects. Web and FTP services were included in the ENT configuration as the tools to support all activities that require information retrieval. E-mail, list server, video conferencing, and remote access services were included in the ENT configuration as communication tools. An implementation scenario of the utility assessment model and a discussion on issues that should be considered in implementing ENT services in construction are presented.

Indonesian contractors have entered the information age by adopting information technologies (IT)... more Indonesian contractors have entered the information age by adopting information technologies (IT) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their business processes. Yet many contractors that have adopted IT face problems related to how to get the best of the adoption and how to reap benefits from the investment. The problem lays in the poor management of IT by contractors including strategic planning, design, implementation, maintenance, evaluation and human resource management processes. This paper discusses three studies conducted to measure the performance of contractors in managing IT. Critical success factors in managing IT were identified from a survey of large contractors and an assessment model was developed based on these factors and implemented by the same contractors. The results of the assessment showed that, in practice, IT is still used merely as supporting tools and there are many limitations to its current usage in contractors' environment. A benchmarking tool for Indonesian contractors to improve their performance in managing IT investments was further developed. A benchmarking case study is discussed in this paper as a real example of the benefit that a contractor can get from the three studies related to measurement of Indonesian contractors' performance in managing IT.

Salah satu tantangan pada industri konstruksi adalah persaingan yang semakin ketat dan dorongan untuk selalu dapat beradaptasi dengan perubahan Salah satu strategi yang telah lama dilakukan untuk meningkatkan efisiensi dan efektifitas proses yang terjadi di dunia konstruksi, misalnya dengan mengadopsi teknologi informasi. Teknologi informasi saat ini menjadi salah satu primadona teknologi yang banyak diadopsi oleh hampir seluruh industri dan dipercayai dapat membantu meningkatkan efisiensi dan efektivitas proses yang berlangsung serta meningkatkan kualitas produk pada industri-industri tersebut. Demikian pula halnya industri konstruksi meskipun masih lambat dalam mengadopsi perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi ini. Beberapa perusahaan konstruksi, seperti kontraktor yang telah mulai mencoba untuk teknologi informasi (TI) ini, menghadapi masalah dengan tidak mendapatkan hasil yang optimal dari adopsi tersebut. Hal ini diakibatkan oleh lemahnya sistem pengelolaan TI itu sendiri, baik dari segi perencanaan, perancangan, implementasi, evaluasi dan pemeliharaan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor keberhasilan kritis dalam pengelolaan teknologi informasi khususnya pada kontraktor di Indonesia, yang meliputi strategi perencanaan, perancangan, implementasi, evaluasi dan pemeliharaan. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode critical succes factor melalui survei berupa penyebaran kuesioner kepada 107 kontraktor yang tergabung dalam Asosiasi Kontraktor Indonesia. Hasil survei menunjukkan bahwa dari 47 faktor keberhasilan yang teridentifikasi terdapat 38 faktor keberhasilan kritis yang dapat digunakan sebagai salah satu strategi kontraktor dalam mengelola teknologi informasi. Selain itu, faktor-faktor keberhasilan kritis tersebut juga dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai variabel untuk menilai kinerja kontraktor di Indonesia dalam mengelola teknologi informasi di perusahaannya.

The purchasing strategy of commodities in a construction project is one of the things that determ... more The purchasing strategy of commodities in a construction project is one of the things that determine the success of a project. Commodities in construction projects are very diverse, thus the commodity purchasing strategy will be focused on strategic commodities. Important strategic commodities are determined by contractors in managing logistics to support the implementation of the projects they are working on. This paper discusses the purchasing strategy for small-sized contractors who are usually working on building projects in Greater Bandung areas. The methodology used for this study were identifying strategic commodities by conducting a survey of 10 small-sized contractors in Greater Bandung areas, getting an assessment of strategic commodities, and to trace the historical data of the project, confirming the value of purchasing strategic commodities, then analyze the appropriate purchasing strategy by doing literature review while considering the nature of strategic commodities. The results of the study show that strategic commodities in buildings are sand, cement, concrete, reinforcing steel, brick, and glass.

Even though considered as the laggard in adopting Internet-based services in construction project activities, many construction companies have now entered the Internet age. The variety of options available to construction companies to enter the Internet era, research in academia on exploring the use of Internet services for construction activities, and related commercial products are also discussed. However, to implement Internet-based services in construction project activities successfully, the services should be acceptable in the construction environment and the utility assessment of such services is needed. An assessment model to measure the utility of Internet-based services in construction project activities is then presented. The assessment will determine whether the Internet-based services in the construction industry can perform as intended and may provide an optimal configuration of Internetbased services for supporting construction project activities.

Most of the construction cost comes from the material cost to be delivered to the project site that needs proper logistic management. For large and medium-sized contractors, their capacities and projects values enable them to access closer tier of the supply chains; to the producers of strategic materials with more efficient transactions. This is not the case for small-sized contractors, therefore, there should be a strategic logistic service provided for helping them.
