_11:32 am_[ironychan] Just a Rant... Does anybody else out there find themselves grinding their teeth when a website or something urges you to 'show your support' for pairing X?Sorry to break it to the fangirls, but 'supporting' your favourite pairing is not like, oh, say, supporting the Humane Society, or supporting women's rights. It won't make anything happen. You can show all the 'support' for Harry/Snape that you like, and they still won't be having sex in the next book. I see this a lot with improbable anime pairings, too... the bizarre idea that if pairing X has more 'supporters' than pairing Y, pairing X has somehow 'won'. Am I the only person who thinks this makes no sense?Considering how often people who prefer het pairings are accused of homophobia... does anybody know of a case wherein a slash writer claimed that the only reason her 'supported' pairing aren't together in the books is because the author is an evil bigot who is blind to the true love between her own characters? It's probably happened. -_-(Sorry, I don't hate slash, I really don't... I just find myself hating a lot of the idiots who write it.) (Comment on this)

_2:53 am_[beccastareyes] Some fanfiction help... *And a kick in the rear* Okay, normally I try to stay OUT of the scary place that is Harry Potter fanfiction. However, my muse is the Mistress of Plot Bunnies, and this one is biting me in a painful spot right now.Basically I started thinking about what Hogwarts does with Muggle-born students when they are accepted. It has to be a little more organized than 'have Hagrid take them to buy supplies' -- after all, Harry was a special case. So, I thought I'd write a well-thought-out fic about a future Muggle-born student (in this case Hermione -- why use an OC when a canon will do?), from the time they get the letter to boarding the train at Platform 9 3/4. Is this an original idea? Has it been done to death? And more importantly, what do you think happens to such students? Dumbledore would have to have a plan to take several (Of the eight Gryffindor students we know of in Harry's year, Hermione and Dean are both Muggle-born... that implies a half dozen or so students per year) children who probably think magic is solely in fairy stories and convince them (and their parents who have to consent to sending their little darlings to Hogwarts) that magic exists and they have it -- so well that even someone as level-headed as Hermione is willing to buy extra books on magic and start practicing spells before she gets to school. Also, any help on HP-fic-writing in general (Like where to find a beta reader and such) would help. I'll also have to go back and check if it says any of the other students in Harry's year are Muggle-born -- I skimmed Sorceror's Stone, and should check Chamber of Secrets (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_5:41 pm_[terrorcandy] My number one HP Pet Peeve... ...is the overuse of the House stereotypes. I mean, Rowling doesn't help much, what with her portrayal of the Slytherins as all being eeeeevil. But really, when did the sorting hat ever say in its song, "oh, and Slytherins have to be evil megalomaniacs bent on world domination. And they have to be slimy and gross and dumb too."Especially since "evil" is much more effective when it's pretty. I mean, when you see one of those bad guys that's just sort of ugly, I know I'm not going to willingly listen to them. But if the evil is pretty, then I might be talked into it. It's all about marketing, folks.Slytherins are described as being "ambitious and driven." Those two qualities are pretty essential to being an evil megalomaniac bent on world domination, so it would make sense that they would all end up in that house. But EVERYONE in the house being one? That's not as believable.I guess I just have trouble with the idea that 1/4 of Hogwarts is not only pure evil, but is also slimy and stupid, too. So sue me. _8:06 pm_[thatmadgirl] ah, perfect! What a neat idea for a community. :)And just in time, because I've been wanting to rant about a piece of fanon that I think got totally blown out of the water by OoTP:( just in case you haven't read itCollapse ) (1 Comment |Comment on this)
_5:03 pm_[caribbeanblue] As invited... ...by livviebway: the monumentally large, monumentally boring, Hermione/Snape rant.( By which I mean a rant about H/S fics, not a rant shipping them.Collapse ) (4 Comments |Comment on this)
_9:45 am_[fuunsaiki] **( Do I win a cookie? :DCollapse )**LOVE the name. XD (Well, not necessarily that name, but definitely the name of the community. ;) )Anyway, I guess my petpeeve is cosplaylab.com. Got nothing against Harry Potter cosplayers but there are *way* too many girls who want to be in Slytherin so say they're cosplaying Blaise Zabini. Well girls, if you *were*, then you wouldn't be wearing that skirt, for starters.....1 - http://www.cosplaylab.com/cosplayers/costumes/details.asp?costumeid=268412 - http://www.cosplaylab.com/cosplayers/costumes/details.asp?costumeid=10715Ah, okay, there's only two. But that's still too many. XD Current Mood: chipper (Comment on this)

_11:29 pm_[livviebway] Hi everybody! What a lovely community for all my fanon rants. My friend mentioned this earlier and I thought it was particularly interesting. I know J.K. says she hasn't read any fanfic, but did anyone find Order of the Phoenix tearing down many many fanon clichs? I just have this amusing image of J.K. surfing ff.net and writing down lots of fanfic clichs muttering "Well well, we have to do something about this! And this! Whining muggle-born Slytherin Mary Sues? Check! Tormented, dark, yet utterly sexy and cute Sirius? Check! Etc etc etc..." Current Mood: amused (1 Comment |Comment on this)
_8:19 pm_[ironychan] Well, I'd like to open by sharing my favourite fanon pet peeves. One of them ought to be obvious once you figure out the name of the community. ^_^ The other... why do so many fics take it for granted that Sirius and Remus are/were gay lovers? How many fics have you read in which neither of them are main characters and it's just mentioned in passing that they're married or something, without it being in the least important? I'm mostly indifferent to slash, but for some reason that makes me want to go find a good Marauders-era Sue... at least Mary-Sue fics let the poor boys be straight. (7 Comments |Comment on this)
