On 4 November 2018, the Liminaria edition included in the programme of collateral events of the i... more On 4 November 2018, the Liminaria edition included in the programme of collateral events of the international biennial of contemporary art Manifesta12 ended in Palermo. With the intervention in Sicily, Liminaria closed a cycle of five years of study, research and action in different territories of Southern Italy: from Irpinia to the Sannio Benevento, from Puglia to Molise, from Cilento to Sicily. Rural areas, abandoned places, areas on the margins crossed by means of listening methods and artistic practices that connote a dimension of otherness both from the sensorial point of view and in terms of the resonances of thought.
The reference territory of the project has long been the Fortore beneventano, which for several years has represented an open space in which to rethink the concepts of place, rurality and ecology through the resonances and dissonances of the landscape, understood as a complex context of forces and assemblages of material and invisible elements.
This volume recounts in a rhizomatic and non-linear manner what has happened in these years, from 2017 to 2020, through the voices of artists, critics and scholars who have intervened in the project in different ways and at different times. They, the curators of both this book and the project from 2015 to 2018, have been asked to provide contributions of reflection and analysis on themes around which they have worked through their own research in practice. All texts are published, by choice of the editors, in the original language and without translation.

L’obiettivo è elaborare un approccio inedito di ricerca per reinquadrare quelle particolari trasformazioni legate a fenomeni come lo spopolamento, la gentrificazione, il turismo, le sperequazioni, la scomparsa di identità locali e di patrimoni culturali intangibili. Questioni che passano spesso “inosservate”, e che l’attenzione all’ambiente sonoro può far emergere e portare al centro del dibattito pubblico.
Tracciare le possibili traiettorie di autorappresentazione attivate dall'ascolto per indagare i c... more Tracciare le possibili traiettorie di autorappresentazione attivate dall'ascolto per indagare i confini identitari, scoprire le storie che il territorio conserva e svela attraverso le pratiche quotidiane, attraverso le tracce sonore che segnano gli usi dello spazio. È così che la registrazione ambientale (field recording) lavora sul contesto: raccoglie frammenti privati e li ricompone in una storia collettiva, in una narrazione che è scritta dal pubblico e ne preannuncia lo sviluppo endogeno, stimolandone l'autogoverno. Seguendo questo filo l'invito costante è rivolto a interrogare in chiave identitaria la definizione di «patrimonio culturale intangibile». Sarà necessario allora forzare le possibilità offerte dalla passeggiata sonora (soundwalk) come pratica di deriva, per un rinnovato inquadramento estetico e progettuale. Tale attitudine richiama a quegli strumenti partecipativi che si pongono l'obiettivo di raggiungere una prospettiva comune, capace di accogliere le differenze, ammettere la coabitazione tra identità, rileggere le pratiche quotidiane e gli usi in termini di presidio e di cura. Ci troviamo a cavallo tra marginale e liminale, ovvero tra incapacità di autorappresentazione e nuove istanze di resistenza, di sovversione dell'ordine costituito; o ancora tra attori «muti» e nuovi promotori di «gentrificazione». Ed è proprio su questo confine che il paesaggio sonoro si presenta come l'arena dei confronti e dei conflitti identitari, come la metafora viva di uno scontro continuo tra poteri e sistemi di valori. Se esiste infatti un parallelo tra coscienza di luogo e consapevolezza acustica, indagare le modalità per far maturare consapevolezza all'ascolto ci porta a una riflessione più ampia sul «diritto alla città» e sulla costruzione di «beni comuni». Ci spinge a riconsiderare quei beni immateriali capaci di penetrare e condizionare la nostra percezione e le nostre pratiche quotidiane. L'ascolto si rivela pratica essenzialmente relazionale, laddove il lavoro con e attraverso l'ambiente sonoro diventa occasione per scardinare quelle rappresentazioni su cui si fonda l'incapacità di trasformazione. Vogliamo esplorare una prospettiva tanto distante quanto estranea attraverso cui leggere, coinvolgere e lasciarci coinvolgere dalle comunità locali, per interpretare e orientare insieme un ascolto attivante e attivatore del tessuto sociale. Costruire un archivio sonoro dove ogni abitante potrà riconoscersi e raccontarsi, sentendosi parte di una collettività. L'ascolto e la registrazione diventano strumenti di trasformazione dall'interno, luoghi di discussione dove scrivere collettivamente uno statuto provvisorio (e inter-soggettivamente riconosciuto) dell'ambiente sonoro, che sappia guidare consapevolmente le trasformazioni della città e del territorio.

Mobilizing the concept of atmosphere, this article takes a sonic lens to put forward a sensorial understanding of how urban policies shape city users' sonic experiences and impact the perceived liveliness and attractiveness of public spaces. Reporting on a case study in Mestre (Venice, Italy), we study the effect of two urban policies on the sonic environments in the historic center and on the uses of public space within its pedestrianized area. Through surveys, interviews and recordings, we show how urban policies contribute to the formation of atmosphere.

The contribution investigates the role of relational art practice in culture-led urban regenerati... more The contribution investigates the role of relational art practice in culture-led urban regeneration processes within areas affected by social vulnerability. Drawing from par- ticipatory and collaborative strategies that aim to promote social inclusion, the study shows to what extent relational art practice can be a key tool to foster community empowerment. By doing so, the essay explores the limits and potential of relational art practices as compared to the approaches of social innovation initiatives, which are usually using collaborative tools to address the social and economic development of marginalized urban areas. Building on these theoretical framework, the essay describes the main results of the relational sound art project «Voci fuori campo», developed in the suburbs of Palermo as part of a culture-led urban regeneration process where the author was involved as researcher and artist.

In 2020, the pandemic impacted the social and economic dynamics of cities around the world. Enter... more In 2020, the pandemic impacted the social and economic dynamics of cities around the world. Entertainment districts hosting events, festivals, and other cultural activities were particularly affected, as their loss of attractiveness also impacted their livability. Reflecting on how the experience of the sonic environment contributes to attractiveness and livability in an urban environment, we propose a sonic perspective to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Montreal’s entertainment district – Quartier des Spectacles (QDS). Through semi-structured interviews, we focus on how the sonic experience of QDS’s residents changed throughout 2020, and on how their experiences can provide valuable insight into addressing the district’s future planning and management. Looking at QDS as a case study to orient the post-pandemic trajectories of entertainment districts, we present a number of sound-related governance recommendations aimed at strengthening QDS residents’ involvement in the neighborhood’s cultural, artistic, and political life and its decision-making processes.

L’obiettivo è analizzare i mutamenti dell’attrattività del centro storico in relazione alla sua atmosfera, ovvero al sistema simbolico e percettivo che lo caratterizza, ponendo particolare attenzione al ruolo giocato dall’ambiente sonoro.

Il saggio si propone di studiare la dimensione affettiva della città esplorando alcune caratteris... more Il saggio si propone di studiare la dimensione affettiva della città esplorando alcune caratteristiche rilevanti della sua atmosfera sonora. Definendo il concetto di atmosfera il contributo chiarisce come l’analisi dell’ambiente sonoro contribuisca alla lettura delle dinamiche urbane e sociali che concorrono all’attrattività dello spazio pubblico. A tal fine sono presentati gli esiti di una indagine condotta nei mercati storici di Palermo, dove è stata analizzata la diffusione della tradizionale produzione vocale dei suoi venditori. Il caso studio intende leggere la trasformazione delle pratiche d’uso dello spazio, e incoraggiare nuovi orizzonti di azione politica tesi a negoziare affettività in contrasto e strategie di sviluppo locale.

L’opacità è la proprietà di un corpo di non lasciarsi attraversare dalla luce, è un velo che si p... more L’opacità è la proprietà di un corpo di non lasciarsi attraversare dalla luce, è un velo che si posa sugli oggetti interrompendo la loro trasparenza. Per questo motivo l’opaco disorienta e allo stesso tempo spinge l’osservatore a cercare percorsi alternativi di conoscenza: ad abbandonare il primato della vista per avvicinarsi alla scoperta del mondo attraverso gli altri sensi, attraverso l’ascolto critico dell’ambiente. Il testo si interroga sulla difficoltà di guardare al mondo come a un oggetto sempre riconoscibile e rappresentabile, e dichiara la necessità di elaborare strategie di lettura dell’opaco inedite, capaci di interpretare gli effetti delle azioni umane e di inaugurare nuove ecologie politiche. In mancanza di coordinate visibili chiare, l’ascolto si presenta allora come un dispositivo particolarmente adatto a interpretare gli effetti e gli affetti, ovvero gli impatti dell’azione dell’uomo sul quotidiano.

"Urban atmosphere," which concerns the intangible features that give "life" to everyday environme... more "Urban atmosphere," which concerns the intangible features that give "life" to everyday environments, provides an important means of appreciating the self-image and narratives of marginalized towns and localities. This paper posits listening critically to sonic environments as a means of exploring and reframing urban atmosphere. Listening practices with a sound art-oriented approach can empower local inhabitants and municipalities by inspiring the collaborative governance of immaterial commons. Sonic urban design, which converges sound art and planning, is presented as a tool for developing awareness of the "uniqueness" and fragility of urban atmosphere through listening activities and proposed community-based sonic guidelines. The initial outcomes of my participation as an artist in residence during the sound art festival Liminaria 2018 provides a recent example of sonic urban design in practice.
This research explores the political dimension of sonic environments within public space, with sp... more This research explores the political dimension of sonic environments within public space, with special attention on marginal stakeholders and their sonic behaviour. The aim is to investigate how public policies can relate to issues around the sonic environment and, more generally, how institutions can deal with social conflicts originated by a plurality of sonic perceptions. In order to do so, the paper presents the outcomes of field research developed in Grenoble in 2015, focusing on the " sonic deterritorialisation " of groups of homeless people in the inner city. The case study shows how certain kinds of everyday practices shape and affect sonic and public space and, in particular, the way in which sonic traces reveal social conflict. Homeless people's occupation of public space often involves a sonic challenge to the status quo, which pits marginal stakeholders, citizens, and city users against one another-reflecting the necessity to establish new forms of coexistence. 'Sonic marginality' is thus the consequence of a lack of understanding. It constitutes a ground upon which a new sonic acknowledgment of 'otherness' might develop, and points up the necessary role of sonic studies in better implementing political awareness, and to propose innovative resolutions for social conflict.
The present research explores urban segregation in Belfast through listening. Specifically, the a... more The present research explores urban segregation in Belfast through listening. Specifically, the aim is to investigate how auditory culture subtly and deeply affects everyday lives and how marginal areas can be identified and analyzed from an auditory perspective. Moreover, the paper highlights the strong relationship between everyday sonic environments, certain urban and social issues, and the system of public policies related to the preceding. Therefore, urban planning and public policy design are investigated through a sonic studies approach in order to reveal the political framework of the city. The sonic environment of Belfast's most segregated areas is characterized by ice cream van melodies and their propagation within different neighborhoods. Such a street trade, which is also spread over Great Britain and Ireland, represents the perfect opportunity to enter areas that are often difficult to approach. Our case study shows how a study of the production and reception of the moving melodies emanating from ice cream vans is crucial in detecting where and how Belfast's contemporary culture is developing and in what ways sonic studies may influence a new wave of inclusion policies. The sounds of ice cream vans and their dissemination can be investigated to both confirm and challenge Belfast's segregation trend; understanding them offers practitioners and dwellers an unexplored " sonic tool " to discuss segregation.
How might the recognition of sonic awareness (and its subsequent development) affect and inform t... more How might the recognition of sonic awareness (and its subsequent development) affect and inform the public policy design? It is assumed that the lack of sonic awareness possessed by the citizens who constitute communities currently affects the knowledge controlled by the main stakeholders who establish the guidelines that determine the experience of sonic environment. By exploring the intersection between sound studies and public policy design we believe it is possible to reveal how audible everyday practices might help us to explore otherwise intractable urban issues and enhance the role played by citizens’ acoustic awareness within the design of contemporary cities. This investigation allows the design of alternative maps of city uses, abuses and conflicts, and could help to identify the decline of specific traditional knowledges. Furthermore, audible everyday practices could enact listening education, making collectivities realise their responsibilities in the composition of sonic environment.

In this chapter, I investigate the process of tourism-led urban transformation through the “lens”... more In this chapter, I investigate the process of tourism-led urban transformation through the “lens” of the sonic environment. Focusing on a case study developed in Palermo, I explore the atmosphere of the traditional street markets located within the historical centre of the city, and I inquire the traders’ everyday cries and sales pitch. Called abbanniata in Palermo’s local dialect, this is a widespread practice in Mediterranean cities, performed by vendors to work the crowd and better sell their goods. Analysing the main findings from two research-creation projects realized in 2014 and 2018, I study the presence of abbanniata over the different markets; I then examine the way in which street cries change or tend to disappear over the years as the city is facing in the meantime a significant growth in tourist presence. What happens when tourism interferes in the fragile relations underpinning a distinctive atmosphere and sonic environment? To what extent such atmosphere can continue, under the impacts of tourism, to be attractive towards tourists? Seeking to answer these questions, I support the idea that sonic inquiry into urban atmosphere can meaningfully inform the urban policy response to some of the most detrimental impacts of tourism.

This chapter investigates urban atmosphere through the sonic environment. Exploring the centralit... more This chapter investigates urban atmosphere through the sonic environment. Exploring the centrality of sounds in shaping people’s everyday experiences and taking into account the affective intensities emerging from such experiences, it mobilises the notion of ‘affective atmosphere’ as the product of the interaction and mutual influence between humans, non-humans and matter.
Within this framework, the chapter introduces the concept of ‘sonic coexistence’ as a speculative space where a new understanding of disturbing sounds can help shaping a more inclusive urban environment. It argues that sonic coexistence, rather than inviting a passive acceptance of other bodies’ voices, cries or vibrations, can inspire a critical encounter between distant species as well as diverse – and often conflicting – social and cultural formations.
The chapter finally claims that, by resonating with disturbing sounds – by attuning to affective atmosphere – humans’ listening practice can unfold new political possibilities towards a multi-species sonic ecology. It supports the idea that exercising a political imagination informed by sound and listening can orient individuals as well as institutions to approach uncomfortable sounds and uncanny atmosphere toward a shared and inclusive sonic environment.

Looking at QDS as a case study to orient the post-pandemic trajectories of entertainment districts, we present a number of sound-related governance recommendations aimed at strengthening QDS residents’ involvement in the neighborhood’s cultural, artistic, and political life and its decision-making processes.

Definendo il concetto di atmosfera il contributo chiarisce come l’analisi dell’ambiente sonoro contribuisca alla lettura delle dinamiche urbane e sociali che concorrono all’attrattività dello spazio pubblico. A tal fine sono presentati gli esiti di una indagine condotta nei mercati storici di Palermo, dove è stata analizzata la diffusione della tradizionale produzione vocale dei suoi venditori. Il caso studio intende leggere la trasformazione delle pratiche d’uso dello spazio, e incoraggiare nuovi orizzonti di azione politica tesi a negoziare affettività in contrasto e strategie di sviluppo locale.

L’opacità è la proprietà di un corpo di non lasciarsi attraversare dalla luce, è un velo che si p... more L’opacità è la proprietà di un corpo di non lasciarsi attraversare dalla luce, è un velo che si posa sugli oggetti interrompendo la loro trasparenza. Per questo motivo l’opaco disorienta e allo stesso tempo spinge l’osservatore a cercare percorsi alternativi di conoscenza: ad abbandonare il primato della vista per avvicinarsi alla scoperta del mondo attraverso gli altri sensi, attraverso l’ascolto critico dell’ambiente. Il testo si interroga sulla difficoltà di guardare al mondo come a un oggetto sempre riconoscibile e rappresentabile, e dichiara la necessità di elaborare strategie di lettura dell’opaco inedite, capaci di interpretare gli effetti delle azioni umane e di inaugurare nuove ecologie politiche. In mancanza di coordinate visibili chiare, l’ascolto si presenta allora come un dispositivo particolarmente adatto a interpretare gli effetti e gli affetti, ovvero gli impatti dell’azione dell’uomo sul quotidiano.

"Urban atmosphere," which concerns the intangible features that give "life" to everyday environme... more "Urban atmosphere," which concerns the intangible features that give "life" to everyday environments, provides an important means of appreciating the self-image and narratives of marginalized towns and localities. This paper posits listening critically to sonic environments as a means of exploring and reframing urban atmosphere. Listening practices with a sound art-oriented approach can empower local inhabitants and municipalities by inspiring the collaborative governance of immaterial commons. Sonic urban design, which converges sound art and planning, is presented as a tool for developing awareness of the "uniqueness" and fragility of urban atmosphere through listening activities and proposed community-based sonic guidelines. The initial outcomes of my participation as an artist in residence during the sound art festival Liminaria 2018 provides a recent example of sonic urban design in practice.
This research explores the political dimension of sonic environments within public space, with sp... more This research explores the political dimension of sonic environments within public space, with special attention on marginal stakeholders and their sonic behaviour. The aim is to investigate how public policies can relate to issues around the sonic environment and, more generally, how institutions can deal with social conflicts originated by a plurality of sonic perceptions. In order to do so, the paper presents the outcomes of field research developed in Grenoble in 2015, focusing on the " sonic deterritorialisation " of groups of homeless people in the inner city. The case study shows how certain kinds of everyday practices shape and affect sonic and public space and, in particular, the way in which sonic traces reveal social conflict. Homeless people's occupation of public space often involves a sonic challenge to the status quo, which pits marginal stakeholders, citizens, and city users against one another-reflecting the necessity to establish new forms of coexistence. 'Sonic marginality' is thus the consequence of a lack of understanding. It constitutes a ground upon which a new sonic acknowledgment of 'otherness' might develop, and points up the necessary role of sonic studies in better implementing political awareness, and to propose innovative resolutions for social conflict.

Specifically, the aim is to investigate how auditory culture subtly and deeply affects everyday lives and how marginal areas can be identified and analyzed from an auditory perspective. Moreover, the paper highlights the strong relationship between everyday sonic environments, certain urban and social issues, and the system of public policies related to the preceding. Therefore, urban planning and public policy design are investigated through a sonic studies approach in order to reveal the political framework of the city. The sonic environment of Belfast's most segregated areas is characterized by ice cream van melodies and their propagation within different neighborhoods. Such a street trade, which is also spread over Great Britain and Ireland, represents the perfect opportunity to enter areas that are often difficult to approach. Our case study shows how a study of the production and reception of the moving melodies emanating from ice cream vans is crucial in detecting where and how Belfast's contemporary culture is developing and in what ways sonic studies may influence a new wave of inclusion policies. The sounds of ice cream vans and their dissemination can be investigated to both confirm and challenge Belfast's segregation trend; understanding them offers practitioners and dwellers an unexplored " sonic tool " to discuss segregation.
How might the recognition of sonic awareness (and its subsequent development) affect and inform t... more How might the recognition of sonic awareness (and its subsequent development) affect and inform the public policy design? It is assumed that the lack of sonic awareness possessed by the citizens who constitute communities currently affects the knowledge controlled by the main stakeholders who establish the guidelines that determine the experience of sonic environment. By exploring the intersection between sound studies and public policy design we believe it is possible to reveal how audible everyday practices might help us to explore otherwise intractable urban issues and enhance the role played by citizens’ acoustic awareness within the design of contemporary cities. This investigation allows the design of alternative maps of city uses, abuses and conflicts, and could help to identify the decline of specific traditional knowledges. Furthermore, audible everyday practices could enact listening education, making collectivities realise their responsibilities in the composition of sonic environment.

In this chapter, I investigate the process of tourism-led urban transformation through the “lens”... more In this chapter, I investigate the process of tourism-led urban transformation through the “lens” of the sonic environment. Focusing on a case study developed in Palermo, I explore the atmosphere of the traditional street markets located within the historical centre of the city, and I inquire the traders’ everyday cries and sales pitch. Called abbanniata in Palermo’s local dialect, this is a widespread practice in Mediterranean cities, performed by vendors to work the crowd and better sell their goods. Analysing the main findings from two research-creation projects realized in 2014 and 2018, I study the presence of abbanniata over the different markets; I then examine the way in which street cries change or tend to disappear over the years as the city is facing in the meantime a significant growth in tourist presence. What happens when tourism interferes in the fragile relations underpinning a distinctive atmosphere and sonic environment? To what extent such atmosphere can continue, under the impacts of tourism, to be attractive towards tourists? Seeking to answer these questions, I support the idea that sonic inquiry into urban atmosphere can meaningfully inform the urban policy response to some of the most detrimental impacts of tourism.

Exploring the centrality of sounds in shaping people’s everyday experiences and taking into account the affective intensities emerging from such experiences, it mobilises the notion of ‘affective atmosphere’ as the product of the interaction and mutual influence between humans, non-humans and matter.
Within this framework, the chapter introduces the concept of ‘sonic coexistence’ as a speculative space where a new understanding of disturbing sounds can help shaping a more inclusive urban environment. It argues that sonic coexistence, rather than inviting a passive acceptance of other bodies’ voices, cries or vibrations, can inspire a critical encounter between distant species as well as diverse – and often conflicting – social and cultural formations.
The chapter finally claims that, by resonating with disturbing sounds – by attuning to affective atmosphere – humans’ listening practice can unfold new political possibilities towards a multi-species sonic ecology. It supports the idea that exercising a political imagination informed by sound and listening can orient individuals as well as institutions to approach uncomfortable sounds and uncanny atmosphere toward a shared and inclusive sonic environment.

In order to define Landscape and Heritage from a wider sonic perspective, we must distance oursel... more In order to define Landscape and Heritage from a wider sonic perspective, we must distance ourself from the “sight leadership” which has established in the modern western culture. To this end we have to notice that the Intangible Cultural Heritage defined by UNESCO “includes traditions or living expressions inherited from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants” but it does not take into account an often inconscious, although strong and intangible element dealing with identity such as Soundscape. Thus, we need to substantially reframe the concept of heritage and the ways it is perceived, and compare it with the knowledge produced and controlled by planning and policy design.
This paper aims to mention and understand in which way particoular soundscapes contribute to shape a cultural heritage as much as an aural tradition does. Furthermore we argue that sonic awareness is the first step for such a process; through that an “informed” community may choose which specific sonic cues to safeguard and may disclose which everyday practice lies behind a specific sonic environment.
Taking care of a Soundscape has also to do with the redefinition of the noise pollution policies, working not only on a quantitative scale, besides a qualitative one. The aim is to pinpoint and collect the "acoustic footprints" which give unicity to a certain context and which have to be identified and transmitted. Beyond noise pollution regulation, we belive that planning is the field where a new definition of Heritage and Landscape can take place, fostered by art practices and Sonic Studies.
Le metropoli e le nebulose urbane in continua crescita si portano dietro, come diretta e quanto m... more Le metropoli e le nebulose urbane in continua crescita si portano dietro, come diretta e quanto mai sottovalutata conseguenza, lo spopolamento e il graduale impoverimento economico e culturale delle aree rurali distanti dallo sviluppo urbano. È proprio in momenti di crisi e recessione economica come quello attuale che queste aree rurali, e quindi i sistemi di piccoli borghi che le presiedono, hanno l'opportunità di svolgere un ruolo avanguardista nell'attivazione di processi qualitativi per il territorio, proprio perché sono le uniche a contatto diretto con le risorse locali e con i custodi delle tradizioni indigene. L'entroterra italiano è l'ideale punto di partenza per un ripensamento economico, sociale e culturale, che si sintetizza perfettamente nel principio di 'prosperità senza crescita'. Figura 1. Il paesaggio sonoro che la città manifesta attraverso un complesso intreccio di piani acustici, d... more Il paesaggio sonoro che la città manifesta attraverso un complesso intreccio di piani acustici, di voci e rumori, è il testimone diretto dei linguaggi, del ritmo, delle dimensioni culturali e dei rapporti (più o meno conflittuali) che la città stessa instaura tanto con le rappresentazioni sociali dominanti quanto con quelle sotterranee.
Dedicarsi al paesaggio sonoro vuol dire allora disegnare di volta in volta una mappa costruita su livelli mobili, che elabora confini altri - e spesso contraddittori - a quelli già segnati dall’osservazione. L’ascolto infatti va inteso come una pratica relazionale, un metodo indiziario di supporto all’osservazione: tale supporto risulta indispensabile per dare alla ricerca nuove prospettive. Per questo motivo l’idea di indirizzare l’attenzione verso la dimensione acustica di una città tenta di colmare lo scarto esistente - tanto nel mondo della pianificazione urbanistica quanto in quello delle scienze sociali - tra visione ed ascolto.

Seguendo questi piani l’ascolto diventa il mezzo ideale per avvicinarsi e per leggere un luogo ed il suo scorrere nel tempo, per scoprire le storie che conserva e i pensieri che l’attraversano: il narratore diventa il paesaggio sonoro stesso.

Se appare necessario un nuovo approccio per ridurre i margini di convenienza nella trasformazione dei suoli liberi, allo stesso modo sembra cruciale rivolgere l'attenzione a quelle aree che negli ultimi decenni hanno visto perdere buona parte della propria densità abitativa.
Studiare il consumo di suolo attraverso la lente dello spopolamento può, infatti, fornire nuovi strumenti per il progetto di politiche per la cura del territorio (ripopolamento di piccoli comuni isolati) e di politiche urbane per ripensare al patrimonio abitativo non occupato (pubblico e privato), ed avviare così con le comunità una prospettiva di rigenerazione urbana sensibile e condivisa.
Se è necessaria una nuova narrativa capace di incontrare in maniera sostanziale quei campi del sa... more Se è necessaria una nuova narrativa capace di incontrare in maniera sostanziale quei campi del sapere rimasti tuttora in disparte, bisognerà ricorrere a nuove forme di interpretazione ed a nuovi metodi di indagine del contesto urbano. In questa prospettiva si inserisce lo studio del paesaggio sonoro, inteso come l’ambiente acustico in cui si manifesta l’universo di senso ascrivibile all’udito. Dedicarsi all’indagine sullo spazio sonoro urbano significa lavorare sull’individuazione di una risorsa culturale capace di caratterizzare fortemente il profilo identitario di una città o di una specifica area. Significa intervenire sugli elementi che compongono un patrimonio culturale intangibile, che può dirsi tale soltanto se inter-soggettivamente riconosciuto. Significa dunque confrontarsi con la consapevolezza acustica di individui e comunità, a cui corrisponde la coscienza della qualità stessa dello spazio urbano. Ma approcciare la città attraverso gli scenari acustici che essa esprime porta anche ad avvicinarsi al tema delle pratiche, agli usi ed ai saperi locali coinvolti nella composizione di ogni paesaggio sonoro. Tutelare e valorizzare le pratiche può portare allora a promuovere, ed imparare a prendersi cura, degli aspetti acustici di uno specifico contesto. Può dare la possibilità di approfondire gli elementi intangibili che, spesso inconsapevolmente, donano qualità alla città. Nel far questo sono chiamate in causa tanto le politiche pubbliche, che gli strumenti di tutela delle pratiche, ovvero il grado di coinvolgimento di una comunità nella definizione delle priorità nella tutela delle risorse culturali.

It aims to investigate the potential of critical listening as a tool for attuning and exploring everyday public feelings, and it seeks to engage collaborative sound-art practice as a relevant means for empowering local communities. The contribution provides the outcomes of a case study developed in Palermo at "Quartiere San Giovanni e Paolo" where the author was involved in a public art process as researcher and sound artist, and developed a participa-tory project named Voci Fuori Campo. The action-research uncovered unprecedented perspectives on the relationship between vulnerable neighborhoods, power hierarchies, social inequalities, and gender issues.

Thise paper focuses on the relationship between urban sound art and planning by inquiring into participatory strategies that can invigorate stimulate sonic awareness. Sonic acknowledgment awareness contributes here to design the development of urban and regional policies, revealing the potentials of sonic identities. In The this research, I shows how enacting critical listening can become an a tool of empowerment tool both for the institutions and the citizens, and I examine the main outcomes and perspectives originated emerging from the my participatory sound art project " Listening Closely " developed in 2015 in the southern Italian village of San Cipriano Picentino.
