In the benchmark model, per capita government expenditure is used to create human capital. Two cases are considered regarding taxation: in the first, tax is imposed on both commodity and service sectors, while in the second only the service sector is taxed. In each case the model derives the optimal tax rate and steady-state growth paths. In the first regime where both sectors are taxed we find the optimal tax rate on the service sector to be zero, but on commodity output it is positive. However, in the second regime there is also a unique optimal tax rate on the service sector to finance human capital accumulation. Comparing the growth rates in both cases we also observe that the imposition of tax on only the service sector instead of on both sectors yields a higher rate of growth if the population growth rate along with the marginal productivity of human capital is sufficiently high. We also show that when the service sector is taxed it may grow at a higher rate than the manufacturing sector. An extension of the benchmark model in which government spends tax revenue on accumulation of human capital as well as physical capital confirms that the optimal service tax rate is zero, but the optimal commodity tax rate is positive when both sectors are taxed.

The last two options allow the possibility of entry of a pirate who can be deterred either by incurring anti-copying investment by the MNC or by the LDC government’s enforcement in the form of monitoring. We show that if the transport cost of sending semifinished product from DC to LDC is below a critical level the fragmentation mode of entry is always chosen. Further if monitoring is socially optimal, entry of the pirate cannot be deterred.

Data were collected from group members as well as from non-group members. It has been observed that income generation through group activities has improved the average income of group members but the inequality of distribution of income is high among the group members than that of the non-group members. Secondly, there has been a significant decline in the medical expenditure and school dropout rate in the families of group members than that of non-group members.

We also study the impact of such factors on interlinked loan contracts. The study is based on a primary survey conducted in 24 Parganas (North), West Bengal, India. We observe that occupational categories, political identification, and economic status are the important determinants of loans taken from formal lending institutions. Another important observation is the existence of credit labour interlinkage in a tied loan market. Mostly poorer people have a higher probability of taking a tied loan.

Present paper investigates the factors influencing the employment status of a selected group of self help group members. The same set of self help group members has been surveyed twice, once during 2005 and again during 2009 to collect information. During 2005 survey all the members were employed but during 2009 it were observed that about 55 percent of the self help group members have turned into housewives. The present study will try to examine the influence of socio economic, demographic and political factors on the employment status of the members based on primary survey conducted in some villages of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India. The paper has also tried to investigate the loan use pattern of this set of self help group members. Along with the past occupation of the member the local politics at village level have been found to influence the employment status as well as loan use pattern of the members.

West Bengal has the unique feature of being under a single coalition government for the last 30 years. In this context, we examine the effect of different socioeconomic, political and demographic borrower characteristics on the probability of taking a loan from formal sources and the size of such loans taken. We find that political identity significantly affects the borrowers’ access to the formal loan market. Other factors that are significant in characterising the formal borrowers are occupational categories, landholding and religious status.

It is assumed that willingness to pay for quality of consumers is an increasing function of income. Under the assumption that distribution of income is positively skewed, which is a common characteristic of developing countries, any redistribution of income will induce firms to improve their quality levels in duopoly and monopoly markets if redistribution makes consumers equally or unequally better off. On the other hand, quality levels will deteriorate if poverty is distributed more equally among consumers.

However, under contract renegotiation, when the monopolist is taking the entire risk of replacing the defective product, he will profitably choose high investment level and serves high quality product. But the results show that the monopolist will choose to renegotiate the contract only for limited values of product replacement cost, even if renegotiation is socially optimal.
