Gaiman's text, by itself a pastiche of various Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories (most notably "A Study in Scarlet" and "The Adventure of the Empty House") set in a world belonging to the universe created by H. P. Lovecraft, is filled with allusions to other works of fiction of the period, hidden both within the main text and in the graphic form chosen to present it, imitating a Victorian newspaper. The reader's ability to notice and understand these allusions depends on their knowledge of the canon of Victorian popular culture; decoding them slowly reaveals new levels and new possibilities of understaning the world created by Gaiman and the correct identification of the (largely nameless) protagonists. The system of textual and visual allusions in "Study in Emerald" is a part of an elaborate game that Neil Gaiman plays with his readers.

The Case of Alexander's Childhood and Youth in Vira Alexandri The present paper concentrates on the character of Plutarch’s Alexander and his idealized Greek traits as visible in one particular set of Plutarch’s stories: the narratives on the childhood and youth of Alexander, presented in Vita Alexandri. By presenting him as a Greek hero, with a number of typically heroic and typically Hellenic features, Plutarch transforms the image of the Macedonian king, creating a model for his audience to identify as an embodiment of Greek greatness. While the portrait of Alexander in Plutarch’s Life of Alexander is rather nuanced and not entirely positive (see, for example, his behaviour in the East), Plutarch seems, in the stories of Alexander’s childhood, to be carefully presenting him as a perfect Greek model of a hero and a future leader.

A non-conventional route for controlling both the particle size distribution and the morphology o... more A non-conventional route for controlling both the particle size distribution and the morphology of yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia has been studied. Non-isothermal decomposition from hydroxide was chosen as a process suitable for preparing the uniformly aggregated nano-crystalline 3Y-TZP powder. The obtained powder had a particle size of 9-18nm, and a narrow aggregate size distribution of 20-70nm. The charac teristics of zirconia non-isothermal calcination were investigated in order to choose the best heating regime. Changes in the heating schedule caused changes in the powder morphology. Calcination includes several processes: complete decomposition of hydroxides, crystallization of zirconia, close packing into aggregates, and agglomeration at elevated temperatures because of particle bridging. These processes are superimposed with elevating the calcination temperature. There are two schedules differing both in fineness of the final powder and degree of aggregation-agglomeration. A non-linear heating schedule, produced the finest pow der, uniformly aggregated, and non-agglomerated. Keeping lowest possible temperature allowed preventing high-temperature bonding and bridging of particles, which results in hard agglomerates. A high packing density of 56% was achieved after slip casting and cold isostatic pressing, which allowed low-temperature sintering, resulting in a fine-grained dense ceramic body.

The mystery of Catullus 67 The text deals with Catullus’ carmen 67, a problematic and unclear poem, set in Brescia and dealing with the motifs of marriage and infidelity. It analyses a number of problems crucial for the text: the question of its genre, the possible identity of the characters in this little domestic drama and the role of the addressee: the door of the family house.

XI), 1 Macc., Daniel, Pirke de Rabbi-Eliezer, Talmudic treatises and the Midrash, concentrating mainly on the interplay between Alexander as a universal ruler, an idealized (as much as it is possible in the context of Jewish literature) foreign king and a godless tyrant.

The films I am about to analyse cover the perion from the 1960s to the 2010s; these are mostly British and North American (USA, Canada) productions (Star Trek, Stargate, new and old series of Doctor Who). I am mostly interested in two problems: firstly, the sources and origins of Rome's image as presented in these series, and secondly, the motifs, topoi and stereotypes connected with ancient Rome that seem most prevalent and important for these representations.

Not trying to assess any historicity of the events discussed, I would like to look at Suetonius' text from two complimentary points of view. On one hand, I would like to place Antony's accusations of homosxuality, effeminacy and prostitiution in their current cultural context and to analyse them against the background of Roman ethical tradition (and the changes therein, occurring in late Republican/Augustan times and discussed, among other, by Eva Cantarella) as well as Greek cultural influence. On the other, I would like to look at the reception of this motif in modern popular culture. An analysis of two instances when the motif of Octavian's seduction is used (these are season I of HBO's TV series Rome and Neil Gaiman's, Stan Woch's and Dick Giordano's graphic short story, August) would provide an insight into the actualizing, subversive and selective readings and reinterpretations of classical tradition by modern popular culture.

In my presentation I would like to look at this phenomenon from a very specific point of view, taking into account local historiography of a conquered people, placed within both local and Greek cultural context. Namely, I would like to concentrate on early Hellenistic Jewish historical accounts on Alexander the Great (1 Maccabees, Pseudo-Hecataeus), in order to analyze, firstly, the emerging image of Alexander and secondly, its possible interpretation within the general framework of the Jewish culture of the period (the idea of kingship, of universal monarchy and foreign rule, relations with non-Jews, the self-image of Hellenistic Jewish culture), as well as its placement within the concept of the literary genre of historiography in its Hellenistic Jewish variation.

The aim of the class is to take Catullus out of the usual context in which he is often read by the students of classics and literature alike, i.e. that of a romantic, passionate poet who loved one spoilt, cruel woman and was heart-broken over her betrayal. Such readings of Catullan oeuvre had great historical impact on European culture, but it is not difficult to see how oversimplified and often patently untrue they are. In their place, I would like to offer a more nuanced, more complicated intepretation, placing Catullus within the artistic, social and ideological world of the late Roman republic.
