The detector is operated in the self-quenching streamer mode (SQS) to simplify on-line recognition of electromagnetic showers. Stable electronics at low noise guarantee robust pattern recognition through the experimental runs. The construction and performance of the detector is

The readout system consists of an analog front-end ASIC for the readout of the pad multiwire chamber, a readout controller board, the so-called readout board for collection and digitization of the analog information from the ASIC and an optical link system for the data transfer. The readout system is designed to cope with event rate of 10 events/s and a data transfer rate of 1.9 Gbyte/s. Utilizing a multistage fast multiplexing system, the cost per channel is kept on the level of $5. Recent results from a test experiment confirm the intended performance of the readout system.

The reaction (α, 2n) on 90Zr target was used to populate the excited states which were investigated by γ-single spectra, beam-γ, γ–γ and beam-γ–γ coincidences. The excitation function and lifetimes were also measured. Several new γ lines belonging to the 92Mo and a few new levels were found. The results were compared with the level positions predicted by the nuclear shell-model.

From an analysis of spectral features due to pion final-state interactions we have estimated the cross section of the capture process A + N + N + N in the center-of-mass energy range fi N 2.05-2.25 GeV. Within the frame of BUU calculations, our results support the extension of the detailed-balance principle to broad-width resonances.

A spectroscopic analysis of the β-delayed three-proton decay of 31 Ar is presented for the first time together with a quantitative analysis of the β-delayed 2pγ decay. A new method for determination of the spin of low-lying levels in the βp daughter 30 S using proton-proton angular correlations is presented and used to determine that the spin of the 5.2-MeV level is most likely 3 + with 4 + also possible. The half-life of 31 Ar is found to be 15.1(3) ms. An improved analysis of the Fermi β strength including the β3p-decay mode gives a total measured branching ratio of 3.60(44)%, which is lower than the theoretical value found to be 4.24(43)%. Finally, a previously unidentified γ transition from the isobaric analog state in the decay of 33 Ar has been found.
